Stunjack

The stunjack is a large (1.5 - 2 M long) amphibian that lives mostly in swampy or estuarine areas of the tropics. A dark-reddish colour, it lives mostly on fish that it stuns with an electric field it generates in its body. Most things will leave the stunjack well alone and as a result it is relatively fearless so it can cause trouble to fishermen by raiding their nets or pots. However, bigger stunjacks have been known to lurk beneath the water's edge and attack animals coming to drink - stunning them and pulling them in to drown. Larger prey like this are usually taken to the creature's lair to be devoured at leisure. Stunjacks dig complexes of tunnels in mudbars or riverbanks. The entrance is usually underwater, but since the creature is air breathing, the nest is above water level. These complexes can be inhabited by dozens of the creatures in the case of old, large lairs, but family groups of 3 or 4 are more common.
