PUFF SPIDER

The puff spider is a large, gorgeously coloured arachnid, that gets its name from its habit of inflating sacs in its body when threatened. This puffs its body up to about 30 cm in diameter, displaying its blue and red iridescent colours to good advantage. Not only is this startling to would-be predators, but the puff spider's patterns are very similar to its very poisonous relative, the spitting spider, so most predators leave it well alone. The puff spider is also curious for its habit of building communal nests. These can house up to a score or even more adults, and possibly hundreds of spiderlings, which when young lack the patterned sacs. A puff spider nest can be up to 20 feet in diameter and is woven of tough webs around bushes or even trees, forming an enclosed canopy. Usually, the nest is abandoned after a few years or so, as the spiders move to a new locations, and each will start a new nest, enlarging it as new generations reach maturity, until again they split up. Abandoned nests are often used by other small animals, such as treehaunts, for a while until they decay.
