Orvula

The Orvula is an unprepossessing animal found in forests ranging from temperate to subarctic. About the size of a man, it is a long, low beast, that frequents areas with heavy undergrowth. It is an adequate swimmer, often living near swamps or lakes, and taking to the water to evade pursuit. It has coarse grey coat, with a pattern of light and dark stripes - not much coveted by hunters. Its distinctive features are its long neck and head, which are hairless, with a tough leathery hide, and topped with a pair of enormous and very sensitive ears, as well as its hind legs, which are decorated with a pair of sharp bone spurs. These are used to mark trees which designate the territory of a mated pair and their brood and also as a defense. If chased, the Orvula will stop suddenly and lash backwards at its pursuer with the spurs, before fleeing again. This maneuver often catches its pursuer by surprise. The Orvula is primarily a scavenger, but it will eat nuts and berries and in lean times it will break open tree-trunks to get at bees' nests.
