Halparach is a tall, well-built man, sandy-haired, with a long, fine mustache, an easy smile and ready laugh. He is as famous for his way with the ladies as Kersaeda is for her affairs. He is as respected for his ability to spin a poem and command a dance as for his skill in combat. He is also respected for his formidable battle magic - the ability to induce the war-spasm, wherein he becomes a giant, distorted figure almost immune to weapons, his muscles twisting under his snkin like fighting snakes, and blood dripping from his eyes, ears, nose and mouth. However, despite his popularity, no-one knows much about his background (He has, in fact, been a trialist for a black blade twice, but lost both times. Now he has a grudge against the priesthood and the Brotherhood of Black Iron).
