Abu Dhabi Postal History

UAE  POSTAL  ADMINISTRATION
(December 2st, 1971)

On December 2nd, 1971, the six Emirates (Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujeira, Sharjah, and Umm al Qiwain) joined together to form the United Arab Emirates. Ras al Khaima joined on February 10th, 1972.

Abu Dhabi continued to use its own stamps until August 1st, 1972, when a union postal administration came into being. During the same month Abu Dhabi 1970-71 definitive set was overprinted “UAE” in Arabic and English by a local printing press.

Most of the Abu Dhabi Independent postal administration cancels were continued in use during the UAE postal administration. British types (1 & 2) are also known used during the UAE administration. New four types of Abu Dhabi cancels were introduced during the UAE postal administration on January 1st, 1973.

During the first five years after the formation there was only seven post offices in Abu Dhabi. Currently, there are nineteen post offices in Abu Dhabi and eleven postal agencies all works under Abu Dhabi Central Post Office and one postal agency work under Al Ain Central Post Office.
