Lew, Read your message on the Paul Cotton page (alot of poconuts out here) and was tickled that Steve Cropper was involved with the boys. If you dig Steve check out Jesse Winchester's 1999 CD "Gentleman of Liesure" on Rounder for a strong dose along with many other musical titans, ie. Jerry Douglas, John Cowan, and Vince Gill. One of the best CD's of 1999. By the way of musical connections, John Cowan was with an unfortunate aborted effort with Rusty Young called "Sky Kings". I just love the musical circles. I am also looking foward to Paul Cottons "Firebird", hopefully available in just a few days. I keep checking his site for news. |

Paul, if and when you read this, I signed the Guestbook last week but evidently my question was truncated. here goes again; I was wondering what it was like when you first joined Poco working with Steve Cropper? As a musician, I always was enamored of him, his style, his credentials especially with all the soul folks. Him producing a Poco album I always thought an odd match although the finished product certainly had a distinct sound and quality all it's own. Thanks, look forward to hearing some new music. Lew |

I'm eagerly awaiting the release of the "Firebird" Compact Disc. What label will it be on and is January 15th the actual release date or has it been pushed back? Also will they be reissuing "Changing Horses" in the future? Keep us abreast information is so important. |

I'm delighted actually that Paul seems to be in fine form. I was desappointed when he wasn't included on the Poco Legend reunion some time ago. Having been a fan since the beginning, I saw Paul perform on virtually every occasion they appeared in the greater Boston, Ma area. One particular show (my personal favorite) was a show on the Boston Commons, summer of I think 1970, maybe 1971...in any case, it was a beautiful summer evening, we hung around for soundcheck in the afternoon and were the first into the show. Open seating arrangements in the truest of 60's concert fashion to boot! It was truly magic! I took 2 roles of film that night, pictures that I cherish to this day. Paul was playing a black Les Paul Custom thru what looked like Twin Reverbs. During the point where Ritchie did the acoustic 12string solo break on Bad Weather, he hit a "clam" and the whole band just broke up! They never missed a beat however. Paul, if you're reading, I have a question for you. When you first |

Hi Paul and Pocopeople! The new CD coming out is the best news I've heard in a loooong time, can't wait! I'll buy a few extras! Will there also be a new Poco CD coming out? Poco definatly belongs in the hall of fame, and should've got in years ago. Paul, hope to see you and Rusty singing in NJ soon, I'll be waving the Poco flag! |

Paul: If you're reading . . . . I am a contributing editor (since 1987) for "Rock -&- Rap Confidential," a monthly music and politics newsletter published from LA by former Rolling Stone critic, Dave Marsh (his wife, Barbara Carr, manages Bruce Springsteen and Shania Twain with Jon Landau). I'd love any "heads up" from you regarding any new music, projects, etc. which could use some publicity. Also, for what it's worth, given that Dave is a member of the RR Hall of Fame nominating committee, I DO make a pest of myself each year for Poco's nomination. In '95 shortly before you guys came to the Deadwood, SD "Deadwood Jam," I wrote a long piece in the Rapid City Journal giving my arguments as to why Poco deserves enshrinement. Hasn't worked yet. I am in contact with the magazine's on a regular basis as part of my work. There is also a country music station over here which I could also speak to for possible airplay. Paul, I sure was glad to be "surfing" the net and find your homepage....I am very excited about your new Solo project...I've got every album that POCO including your solo project has ever put out and really have enjoyed them... My wife and I are a big fan of yours and of POCO.. I'm glad to hear that Rusty will be playing on your solo project... You mentioned that the sound was going to be southwestern....will it have a "country rock" sound? I subscribe to the POCO Fanzine Magazine and it was rumored that you and Rusty were going to be releasing some new material for a new POCO album? Is this true? If so when do you think the release date will be? When is your album going to be released? How can I purchase a copy? I know several of my friends would like a copy as well.... Paul: I've been a HUGE Poco fan since Poco "Seven," met you and Rusty several times (1981 in Rapid City, South Dakota and 1995 in Deadwood), reviewed your Deadwood Jam performance in '95 for Rapid City Journal, wrote pre- concert article on "Why Poco Deserves to be in Rock -&- Roll Hall of Fame," blah, blah, blah, blah. Anyway, I am a contributing editor for former Rolling Stone and Creem editor, Dave Marsh's "Rock -&- Rap Confidential," monthly newsletter. I'd appreciate any "heads up" you or your publicist could give me on anything you might be involved in that would welcome some publicity. I'm one of the BIGGEST Poco fans around and I'm 40 and I've never seen them LIVE. I could even find the right venue for Poco to play. I'd also love to have Paul and Rusty sign my guestbook. |

To this day the first ISP album is one of my all time favorites. I still play it a couple of times a year. I bought it back in 1968 on the strength of the name and cover. Somehow it just looked cool. I wasn't disappointed. Some years ago I went to see John Mayall at the Lone Star Cafe in NYC and was surprised to see Kal David playing with him. I didn't know right away it was him but then I heard a familiar riff (I think it was from "Hard Luck Story") and as soon as the set was over I walked up and asked him if he was the same Kal David from ISP. I told him the story above and he said "Man,you must be old!" and then he thanked me. I'm also a big Poco fan so it was a blast to see Paul join Poco. And another aside...I play in a Bronx based country band called Troy Willy. A couple of years ago we opened for Great Plains and then found out that they were part of Poco's touring band on the Legend tour. I was ecstatic. Couldn't stop talking about it. Thanks for all th |

Hi again, I haven't been around for some time, due to an operation from a little soccer accident. One or two mails I got from here in the meantime were asking about how to get copies of "Changing Horses" and stuff. Well, one of my friends over here in Germany runs a CD/Vinyl wholesaling business, basically with AOR-/Mainstream releases. But he does have "CH", some CD's from Tim Schmitt and occasionally some Poco or Poco- related stuff. If you feel like, then just check out his page, which is still under construction (3000 items up to now, more than double still to come). Its fun to make great music with good people and you really fit the bill. I wish you the best with the new cd. I know its going to be great. Hello Poco fans, I'm gonna try this message one more time. It's been a while since I've been online and It's great to see all the Poco stuff. I've been a fan since 1974, and still listen to the music all the time. It's timeless. Poco music could fit right in today's contemporary country songlist and it's 20 years old. To any guitarists, I'd love to trade licks or songs. I have resently figured out the chords to "Coast is Clear" Also- a message to Paul, At the time "Changing Horses" was released, I was also listening to a lot of Chris Rea music, and was pleased to see you record "I Can Hear Your Heartbeat". The rest of the album had the same feel to it. Not so much "country-rock". Were you influenced at all by Chris' music or writing at the time? Thanks for all the great music, Paul. Looking forward to hearing the new stuff. Don |

Paul, I can't believe I'm communicating with you. I just found POCO I had been to an Eagles concert and wondering what band Tim Schmit had come from. My husband told me about Poco and bought me "The Very Best of POCO. It was love at first listen. I recognized some of your songs from having heard them on the radio back in the 70's. My husband"s band at that time played some of your songs. His band did not do a lot of them because they "just could not no them justice". He bought me all the rest he could find for xmas that year. I would say that I, too, have become a POCO fANATIC! there will never be another band quite like POCO and never a singer-guitar player I admire and love as much as PAUL COTTON By the way, my husband is also a guitar player. and I am getting back into it thanks to you and POCO! I can't wait for Firebird |

Hey all you POCO and Paul Cotton nuts is this site great or what? I love it! I live in NJ and am a volunteer at a small, (5000 watts) non- profit, diversified format radio station and I host a Wednesday night program at 10pm EST. Recently we went world wide with our own web site, so no matter where you live I invite you to listen. My opening theme music is Rusty's "Grand Junction" and I play some POCO or family tree stuff each week. I've even played Illinois Speed Press. It's great to be able to keep this wonderful music alive for people to hear. So if you're around on a Wednesday night check it out. You can find us at www.wdvrfm.org Hey POCO, thanks. |

I've signed in before but I want to let Rich know that this is a great site and you have helped all of us Poco fans keep the fire burnin'. Thanks for the Coast is Clear tape. Paul- Your music is special to so many of us... Sometimes when I read through all of the explanations of Poco's lack of commercial success I want to scream. You guys have always deserved success but in terms of creating music that touches people and moves people, you have far exceeded some of the bands that 'made it'. Thanks for every great song... I don't have a favorite because it would do a disservice to the entire body of your work. |

(I hate when that happens.) OK, where were we?....yes., .....Late 70's, Winterland, POCO (headliner), T-Rex and the opening band, the DOOBIE BROTHERS. Maybe I'm wrong on this since alot of the memories of those seem to mesh together. (I blame it on the Bacardi Rum) Thanks again. |

Mike T. | 02/Dec/1999:17:21:02
Hey, Paul. The song, "EARLY TIMES/DAYS" off "Good feelin' to Know", seems like it would be a great opening song. Going back a few years, let's say you're the main bill "Winterland" in San Francisco, and the first two bands have finished their sets. After a 15 minute intermission, the stage lights go black and that brings the crowd to their feet. The traditional guitar pug-in sounds and drum flams, signal the crowd to condense forward. Then one spot light hits Bill Graham, and he would proceed to introduce the main bill band. ["Good Evening,........(blah-blah)........please welcome, POCO"]. The opening guitar riff sounds with stage lights at a "quarter" power, then going full with the break in with the rest of the band. What a rush! The power of the sustaining guitars, George's foot pedal and (of course) those vocals, makes this song as one of your openers! Thanks for the years of musicical enjoyment, Paul......ps: If I remember right, this example might be somewhat true.....Late 70's, Wi |

I look for your new release "FIREBIRD" with anticipation. Here's a question I bet you haven't had (LOL). When is "POCO" going to put a NEW recording out, have the rumors been true, is there really talk and how close is it to fruitation? Knowingly, I realize thats a big basket now looking to be filled. On a strange but true note I once had the police called on me by the neighbors for disturbing the peace years ago. OK RICH, I finally got here. Paul, Hi. I was introduced to your music via the ROSE OF CIMMARON effort. A college roomate turned me onto POCO and after awhile he refered to my obsession with the group as "look at this fanatic i've created". Gotta say though, ROC remains my favorite of all POCO's done. This in no way shape or form means I do not care for any of the others. From ROC, to Indian Summer, then The very best of.... then i ended up working backwards and eventually aquired all of them. I am sorry to say Ive only recently got CHANGING HORSES as I had been in the US submarine force when it came out and since then ....well lifes busy you know.I also got to say I was VERY disappointed when LEGACY came out that you were not a part of that effort. Not getting into it here as whatever happened is under the bridge now but I often wondered had you had been on that effort, would it have springboarded into greater success and additional recordings. Reading posts about how nice Paul is reminds me of the one time I met him, before Poco's show at Club Bene in New Jersey (1987?). The earlybirds (me among them) got into the club as Poco was finishing dinner. I interrupted Paul's dinner for a handshake, he was most gracious. I get interrupted at dinnertime by phone solicitations all the time now. I should be as nice as Paul was that night. Please estimate the release date of Firebird! A Christmas present? Dave |

Paul, I know the late Phil Hartman designed a couple of Poco's album covers. I think the "Legend" cover, in it's simplicity, is probably one of the best album covers out there. YOU really made POCO sound great. I'd give anything to hear you and Kal play together again. It is so great to see that so many people out there love Poco's music as much as I do. I have seen many concerts over the years, but I think that the best show I ever saw was Poco in Little Rock, AR in about '74. They were booked into a small hall (about 2500 seats) but there was a terrible storm that night at show time. We're talking tornadoes all around the area. So, only about 200 people showed up. Poco took the stage and they peered out at the virtually empty house and said, "Thank you all for braving the weather tonight. Since you are here, we're gonna make it worth your while." And did they ever! They played their butts off, as if they were playing to a stadium full of people. They were obviously having a great time onstage and this translated to the audience. It was like a big private party with the best live band ever, playing just for us! I left exhausted from cheering, clapping, singing along and dancing in the aisles! It was STUNNING! Perfect vocals, inspired playing and |

I wanted to share an experience I had when seeing Poco live this past summer. Poco was playing Spellbound with Paul doing an incredible job on lead guitar. Just phenonenal. At the end of the song, Rusty recognizes Paul's playing by simply saying "Paul Cotton". In an instant, one could see and feel the type of person Paul is by the immediate reaction to the compliment. He instantly said, "Rusty Young" but in a tone of voice that was not only surprised but thankful and complimentary to Rusty as well. I don't think Paul wanted to steal the thunder from one of Rusty's well-penned songs but he was just doing his job and doing it well. And I think Rusty recognized it. It's very cool that they are still good friends "After All These Years". Thanks Paul for sharing you talents with us and enriching our lives. We are all looking forward to "Firebird". |

Hi Everyone:Just checking in. Have enjoyed reading your comments. In answer to George Kriger's question: Western Waterloo was a song about how the Native Americans lost the West. The song was not about any living person or personal situation. "Trader" referred to a man who dealt in the transfer of goods back in those days. Will keep you posted on the Firebird project as things develop. Happy Trails To All -Paul |

I saw the Rovin'Kind play a couple of times. I'd have to say it was around 1965/1966. They were by far the absolute best live band that I ever saw. Their overall sound was unbelievable. I'll never forget how great they sounded. I wish that I had an hour's worth of one of their sets to listen to, cause they were "The Band." |

Paul, One of my great concert experiences was hearing your reworked version of "A Right Along" on the "Legend" tour, which you dedicated to Lowell George. I'm looking forward to your new releases. |

Mighty fine and wellresearched page! I am currently writing an article about Poco (have interviewed George, Rusty and Richie)and was curious about the song "Western Waterloo". I wondered if it was a slap at Richie leaving the band, but then when I read the lyrics on the site instead of "There he goes he's a traitor" (which I heard) it says "he's a trader". Perhaps you can enlighten me. |

Paul, Ride The Country from the Poco Live LP has got to be one of the all time great cuts from any of the Poco LP's. Do you have any insight into why it has never been released on any of the Poco compilations, or why that LP has never been released on CD?. That one track captured on record what a Poco show was. |

Hi Paul, Has your new CD Firebird been let loose yet?? If not, when might the stores get it? You my man make the music world go round, don't care what they say, you do. Today I called a local music store and asked about the CD and the lady I spoke to said that she went to college with your sister. She said that you were playing with Poco at the time and you came up to see Sis. I asked her if she met you and her responce was, I was afraid because he was a big star. You are still the MAN. Keep up the good work. We all love you Paul. Thanks . Bill A Smith |

Rich, Great job you are doing with this site. Paul, Living here in southern California and having a job 30 miles from home, I spend many hrs stuck in traffic on the freeways. Last night as I was listening to your first solo 'Changing Horses', You tune "After all these Years" really hit home. My wife and I are celebrating our 17th wedding anniversary on Nov 6th. She has always been there through thick and thin. She has always 'come running on the double' Thanks for writing a great song. Thanks for the music...It's been great. |

Being a fan of Poco, and in specific Paul Cottons guitarwork and songwriting,it really excites me to hear about the "Firebird" project of which I haven't heard before and probably never will here in Denmark, where Poco is a forgotten trail. Can anybody help me on specifications or any information on this new album, if that's what it is ? E-mail : simonhelle@get2net.dk sincerely Simon Vagn Jensen |

....and the second question...Until 'Blue and Gray' I never heard you AND Rusty singing on the same song - I may have missed something that you DID do together as lead/harmony/backup but I felt that you had some sort of agreement NOT to sing on each other's songs - is this correct? Strange sort of question? You bet! Anyway - looking forward to 'Firebird' - hope I can get a copy in Liverpool! |
||
John McAlley | 13/Oct/1999:09:48:14
Paul - a couple of questions....in 1977/8 I listened to Indian Summer, Head Over Heels and ROC until I knew every note of every song. More than anything I often wondered exactly how you got the delicious guitar sounds on Indian Summer - especially 'The Dance' section - I always assumed that it was a White Falcon but what effects and amp(s) did you use? My son has played in numerous bands here in Liverpool and he's frequently covered Poco stuff which DOES get recognised - we DO have some culture here though there don't appear to be any other Poco or ISP tribute bands - and he likes to come close to the original sounds that you put out at that time. |

Great Home Page here !! I had been to the Poco Home Page many times before discovering this one. Paul, I've been a great fan of yours and the rest of the Poco fellas since 1970 (my freshman year in college). My all time favorite album is From The Inside. Coincidentally, my wife just ran across an original announcement card that she picked up in our student union in 1971 (she saves everything!). The card reads: VIRGINIA TECH UNION CONCERT featuring POCO Friday, November 19,, 1971 8:00 p.m. in the Tech Coliseum STUDENTS $3.50 -&- $3.00 GENERAL PUBLIC $4.00 I remember this concert very very well. It was my first live Poco viewing and I was just as pumped as the rest of the crowd. Keep up the great work, Paul. Enjoyed "Changing Horses" very much also. |

Some of my favorite guitar work by you is on the From the Inside album...Railroad Days and especially What If I Should Say I Love You. All the best. Dennis Sargent WDVR-FM 89.7 Sergeantsville, NJ |

Hi Fans! Its me again! To Bill Lockery: regarding the J.J. Cale question: JJ's personal assistant came by the studio to say that JJ loved the version that we did of Magnolia. To Dennis Sargent: Yes, I would be happy to do a station ID for your radio station at some point - maybe early next year. To Richard Hirsh: Yes, you were right, I was acknowledging the fans with the red rose on my guitar strap! Thanks to all for your continued interest. Happy Trails! Paul Cotton |

Hello again, since Paul reads the guestbook I thought I would take this opportunity to ask a question. I recently finally found a used copy of the J.J. Cale album "Naturally" which has the original version of Magnolia on it. I wanted to ask Paul if Mr. Cale had ever discussed and/or commented to him regarding his version of the tune from "Crazy Eyes"? It has always been one of my favorite POCO songs. Was Mr. Cale into POCO? Just wondering. Thanks Paul! Peace Bill Lockery |

Hi Rich, Great tribute page to Paul. Did you think that when we were in high school that you'd end up doing this? Seems pretty fitting as we were (are) the ultimate Poco fans! Paul is deserving of the attention. His wonderful soul comes through with each tune he sings and plays guitar on. Way to go Rich. Your old buddy, Kim Chatfield |

I have been visiting the POCO homepage since it came up. Was very exicited to see Paul getting his own well deserved page, thanks Rich!! I have had the pleasure of seeing POCO three times here in Wisconsin and meeting Richie when he visited Appleton WI on church business last year. What a great singer. Paul I first saw POCO in Green Bay on the Ghost Town tour. When you came out with the White Falcon my buddy and I became fans for life. I'm sorry to hear you no longer own the Falcon but your Gibson sound just as good. I just recently found two copies of the Changing Horses CD at my local used vinyl shop. I have been looking for it since it was released and imagine my surprise when a shop I visit monthly had two copies. Both were purchased, one went to a fellow Cottonnut and one is playing as I type this. Again, as with POCO, I can't understand why this did not sell well. Paul, you have a lot of fans here in Wisconsin who are waiting for FIREBIRD. One last point if I may, Pa |

Unbelievable site!! I first saw POCO back in '73, twice in one day as a matter of fact. They played an outdoor freebie at Farliegh Dickinson U. in Madison NJ in the afternoon and later that night I saw them at the Capitol Theate in Passaic, NJ. I was fourteen at the time and have been an avid follower and fan ever since. Over the years I've had the pleasue of meeting Paul, Rusty -&- Richie. Gentlemen all!! Now some twenty-six years later I have as a hobby of sorts a radio show on a small (5000 watts), non-profit, all volunteer radio station in Sergeantsville, NJ WDVR-FM 89.7. It's been a pleasure to be able to keep POCO's music alive and out there on the airwaves. As a mattr of fact I use Rusty's instrumental "Grand Junction" as my opening and closing theme music. Earlier this year Richie was kind enough to lend his voice to the station by way of a station I.D. Since Paul checks this site out do you mind if I ask?........ "Howdy Paul, would you be interested in or able to do a sta |

Paul and Rusty are the keepers of the legacy! Last saw Poco at House of Blues in Chicago, summer 1997...a question for Paul: the Poconuts who went to that show agreed to identify each other by wearing a rose (of cimmaron) and Mr. Cotton had one on his guitar strap that night...just wondering.... meanwhile, great to hear about FIREBIRD. Who will be handling the drums? |

I'm sitting here today, waiting for the record store to open so I can get the new CD by my other favorite Paul (McCartney). I'm stunned to see the Poco fan's responses and really happy to see that Paul knows about all of this! Keep it up, I'm awaiting the new "Firebird" Cd like a kid at Christmas! Until then, I'll keep playing all of the others.. |

Rich What a great page for Paul. I'm sure he is proud of what you have done. And, Paul, just wanted to say thanks for the great music you have put out for the better part of my life. I've told this story before, but I was a Poco fan during the first three albums. They were great rocking albums that lead to a new sound that has stayed with me for years. But, then, From The Inside came out and the music spoke to my heart. At the time, I was going through all of the hormonal changes that you men go through in their late teens. My parents were on the edge of goodbye about once a week. My girlfriend wanted a future and I didn;t even know what the present was. Then someone (thanks karen stocktin) played Bad Weather for me and everything that I had been feeling in my heart and mind played out in front of me in that 5 minutes. That song has remained my all time Poco song. And it always will be. Every now and then I pull out an old album/tape/cd that I haven't listened to |

Rich, What a great site you've put together for Paul.He is truely a first -class artist and songwriter who consistantly paints vivid pictures. Whether it's in the Quarter of New Orleans, chasing down a taste of rum in Barbados or a soldier's pleading letter from a Civil War bat- tlefield,Paul always seems to capture the moment and places us there. With his undenialble voice,he also breathed life into a song not his own (but seemed so Paul Cottonish, and to me,the epitome of the Poco sound);"Magnolia" by J.J. Cale.(I still can't imagine anyone else sing- ing it). Paul, I wish you luck with "Firebird"-can't wait to hear it! Rich, again thanks for creating such a wonderful website for such a well deserved singer, songwriter, guitarist, good person and friend, Paul Cotton. (By the way, Frank-"where's Vicki Carr's Album"?) -Thom. |

Just a weekly response to say "Thanks" to all who have signed in to this wonderful website. Rich, I don't know how you find the time, but I thank you for every second that you have spent on my career and this site! In response to Albert Martin from Germany: When I joined Poco in 1970 they had tuned their guitars and bass down 1/2 step to save wear and tear on their voices night after night and in the studio. It wasn't until Under The Gun that we went back to standard tuning. Hope this helps your C# problem with Heart of the Night. Happy Trails to All! |

Paul, Always enjoyed your music, I was a rodie with a band that palyed with ISP, The Ides of March and Zephyer in some GOD forsaken town out west in 70 or 71. Then saw POCO at a college booking fair in NY same year. Best memory was seeing POCO at PARK WEST in CHICAGO late 70's feet front seats at table in front of you, wife saw the Gretch White Falcon and mentioned it to me, you heard her and spun around flashing a big smile, later you worked the Falcon to the T. great music, great memories, it's amazing how things come and go but some things will always remain. I've got an LP of Duet and some where an 8 track. Thanks for the music and the memories. Keep hold of the driving wheel. Jim |
