Multigenre Research Papers

"I am large, I contain multitudes."
Walt Whitman

Hide not your talents
For use they were made
What's a sundial in the shade?
Ben Franklin

The term "Multigenre Research Paper" was coined by Tom Romano (1995). It refers to a "non-traditional" research paper where students research a topic in depth and report their findings in a "genre-blended" paper. To do this, they select a research topic that interests them, study it in detail, and try to see it from multiple perspectives. The outcome, that is the MG research paper, is a blend of multiple genres and perspectives.

Below you will see my six-week plan and also some extracts from my students' MG papers. I hope you explore the idea of using multiple genres in your classes--it can be a challenging experience for the teacher but the rewards are many! If you are interested, I suggest you read "Writing with Passion: Life Stories-Multiple Genres" by Tom Romano (1995).

Rough Six-Week Plan for the MG Paper:

Week 1: Introduction to the MG Paper and selection of topics
Week 2: Exploring the topic: in-depth research
Week 3: Studying sample MG papers from Romano
Weeks 4-5: Practicing with genres, giving and receiving feedback in class and in individual conferences, revising
Week 6: Bringing the paper together

Throughout these six weeks students keep journals.

CAT STEVENS TO YUSUF ISLAM

WHERE IS THE KEY?
I am shivering
But the winter remains in the past long ago
What is wrong,
Why won't my tears ever dry?
. . .
I was born and have lived in fire
But now
I am shivering;
. . .
I felt high, lived high
Smiled low in fire,
If I can rain
I will flow through the sun
And do not have pain
If only I can rain. . .

* * * * * *

TODAY IS CAT'S BIRTHDAY

Stephen!
What is wrong? You are lost. I cannot stand to see you like this. What can I do? I remember our last conversation. You said you were bored. You were looking for the key. I don't know where the key is. But I'm sure it's not hiding inside the drink!

. . .

I bought you a religious book, "Kuran". I've read it before. Please spend your time reading it. Give a chance to this day to be your first birthday.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY! (It's hard to be a brother.)

******

. . . I found it,
It was in my brother's pocket,
The door opened
And
I'm crying;
Because it is the end of the shivering;
I am RAINING.

HANNIBAL: A GENIUS? A HERO? OR BOTH? OR?

I WONDER...

I wonder hannibal
How you managed
To be brave as a lion
To be cunning as a fox
To be a real nightmare
To your enemies

Also Hannibal
How you managed
To be diligent as a bee
To be democratic as an ant
To be a reliable administrator
To your people

And
How you managed
To be combative as Mars
To be persuasive as a diplomat
To be a noble leader
To your army

Hannibal...
You are the one
That I want to be similar to
Like two halves of an apple
Except one point
Unfortunately you lost
But I hope I don't!

EXTRAORDINARY MUSIC, EXTRAORDINARY LIFE
JIMI HENDRIX

THE LEGEND IS SPEAKING...

If a religious gardener did not choose a pure Indian woman as a wife, I wouldn't be born. But I think he did the best. I'm so happy here in the world.

Although I don't know much about my mother I love her. Because she was a very interesting woman. She died when I was ten. As for my father, despite all his rules I loved him too. He made me start music. One day I was playing with the broom straws like a gutiar. And he found an old string ukelele for me. It was my first musical instrument.

. . .

As for my father's rules, he made me go to church and had my hari cut like a torn out chicken. Therefore my hair has been quite long in the rest of my life. Maybe it's a symbol of freedom. . . But I lost my freedom when I met Devon. She was the most beautiful and intelligent girl I had ever met. I became addicted to her. Not only to her but to drugs with her help. Maybe it was the beginning of the end.

. . .

ROOM FULL OF MIRRORS

At nights!
Which are the most precious times
When I turn off the lamps
Another light emerges

The light of Jimi's soul
The light of the prince
The light of the cool
The light of peace

. . .

I never feel his absence
Because we are together at nights
