Writing Formulas and Naming Compounds
- Be able to write formulas and name compounds of each of the following types of groups
Nonmetals-Nonmetals
- The first element only needs a prefix if it has more than one atom.
- The second element will always need a prefix
- The following are the prefixes:
- one - mono
two - di
three - tri
four - tetra
five - penta
six - hexa
seven - hepta
eight - octa
nine - nano
ten - deca
Metals (without multiple charges)
- Name the anion with the -ide ending
- If either the cation or anion is a polyatomic ion, name as is
Metals (with multiple charges)
- Identify the charge of the cation
- Use a Roman numeral to identify that charge
- Name the anion as normal (with the -ide ending or as a polyatomic ion
Acids
- Identify by the cation being hydrogen
- Name the anion using the anion/acid chart
- Follow with the word acid
Acid Salts
- Name the cation using the above rules
- Name the polyatomic using hydrogen in the middle. If there are more than one hydrogens present, use a prefix before hydrogen
Hydrates
- Name the anhydrous part of the hydrate according to the above rules
- Name the hydrate using a prefix to identify the number of waters present followed by the word hydrate
