According to the "GENEALOGY OF THE GREENLEE FAMILIES" published in 1908 by Ralph Stebbins Greenlee and Robert Lemuel Greenlee and other sources, comes the following: about the decendants of JAMES GREENLEE OF TENNESSEE, James Greenlee married Nancy (surname unknown) They came Ireland and setttled in Virginia on the Potomac River. He spent some time in Pennsylvania before he went to Virginia Some of his sons served in the revolutionary war. James and Nancy were the parents of the following children:>> John Greenlee born: Oct. 1775, married Elizabeth Sunderland 1797 Jefferson Co. Tenn.>>Alexander Greenlee; settled at or near Tazwell , Claiborne Co. John Greenlee married on July 1797 to Elizabeth Sunderland in Jefferson Co. Tennessee. Elizabeth was the daughter of David and Elizabeth Sunderland of Jefferson Co. Tennessee. John Greenlee and Elizabeth Sunderland were the parents of the following children:>> Nancy Greenlee born in 1798 ; married Edward Mayes. >>James Greenlee born; Nov.1, 1800 ; married Phebe Mayes.>> >>John Greenlee born; April 8,1803 or 1802; married 1822 to Mary Polly Mayes, (sister to Phebe)and daughter of Ligion Mayes and wife Esther Daniel.>>Eli Greenlee Married Mary Daniel.>>Mary Greenlee born; 1807; married to Henry Mayes. >>Hamiliton Greenlee born; 1809 ; married Mary Sunderland >>Elizabeth Greenlee born: 1811 married to Charles Biddle. XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX JOHN GREENLEE Father of all the above, emigrated from North Carolina to Kentucky, thence to Tennessee about 1790, and is found in records of Jefferson County and Grainger County Tennessee, where he purchased several hundred acres of land. His life long occupation was farming and stock raising. He was a Whig in politics, and a Missionary Baptist in religion. He was a soldier in the War of 1812, and a brave and fearless man. He resided near Rutledge Tennessee. XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX JOHN CALVIN GREENLEE SR. the son of John Greenlee and Elizabeth Sunderland (Southerland), was born: April 8, 1802 or 1803, Near Rutledge Tennessee. He died in 1888 at 86 years of age. John Calvin Greenlee married in 1822 at Rutledge to Mary Polly Mayes, born 1806 near Rutledge Tennessee, the daughter of Ligion Mayes and Esther Daniel,(Esther was the daughter of Edward Daniel whose last will and testament is listed below.)The Mayes and the Daniel were both orginally of Henry Co. Virginia. John Calvin Greenlee was a farmer. In politics he was a Republican. In Religion a Baptist; John and Elizabeth resided six miles south from Rutledge Tennessee. After committing my soul to God, and my flesh to the earth in hopes of a sure resurrection do here by make and publish and declare this my last will and testament revoking all others. Item 1st. That all my just debts should there be any at my decease be faithfully paid. Item 2nd. I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Anna Daniel, the full and entire possession and enjoyment of all and every part of my estate both real and personal, during the term of her natural life. Item 3rd. I give and bequeath to my son Isaac Daniel after the decease of my wife Anna, the tract of land that I now live containing One hundred acres (more or less) With all its improvements and apprtainences & further do here by require the execution of justice when ever said Isaac Daniel shall become sezed and possession of said premises according to the purpose of this instrument. That he pay to my daughter Jemima Daniel the sum of one hundred dollars. Item 4th. Whereas I hold a bond on my son William Daniel for the amount of five hundred dollars in the distribution of which I require the following order, that is to say I give and bequeath the amount of the said five hundred dollars to the following named legatees observing the order of their ages in the following list and that each one recieve their individual part there of as here after mentioned (Viz) ::: Easter Mayes, Elizabeth Mary Mayes, Anna Hodge, John Daniel, Joseph Daniel, Edward Daniel, Mary Mayes, Rebecca Sunderland, Sally Mayes, and Jemima Daniel, & be it further understood that the above named ten legatees recieve equal shares in said five hundred dollar bond. viz, fifty dollars each. Item five. I require that after the death of my wife Anna Daniel there be a public sale made for the disposition of my negroes, horses, cattle, hogs, and all and singular of my perishable property and that collection of my debts which may be due my estate be made and added to the amount of the sale proceeds, and that equal division and distribution be made of said proceeds among all and singular of legal heirs in my family of children there being twelve in number whose names are refered to in the course of this instrument. Item 6. I do hereby choose nominate and appoint my two sons Edward Daniel and William Daniel my true and lawful executors to execute and faithfully fulfill this my last will and testament. Greenlee XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX State of Tennessee Grainger County August 1, 1869 Dear Uncle & family it is with great pleasure that I seat my selfe to answer your kind letter it has bin some dayes since I got your kind letter but I have bin verry busy hawling in my wheat and oats and working with the (mathing) and I hope you will pardon me for not writing sooner I was glad to hear that you was well and had plenty of this worles goods to sender you comefortable in this life and a hope in the life to come You desire in your letter that I write to you how time is in Tennessee and you want general news about your brothers and sisters relations and friends Uncle George is dead he was taken prisnor at barbersvill kentucky and taken to knoxville and from there to Richmond virginia and sent from there to salsberry north caolina whare he was ill treated and starved he was engaged before he was captured a carrying out men out of Tennessee in to kentuckey and redruiting for the federal army His wife is living on her fathers land Three of the children is married Samuel and Marthy and francis and marthy is dead She died in a year or so after she married. William is living in Jefferson County in back of new market one of his children is married. father is still living but mother is dead She died last August all my brothers and sisters is married. William married marthy Dalton George married Squire James,es daughter elisa vistory maried Colby Dalton and Jane she married Robbert Hammers a son of Abraham hammers. I do not remember wheather you have eaver learned that Uncle James Greenlee is dead Uncle James Greenlee and aunt feby is both dead uncle was gratley misst in this communty as a minister. brother James is stil living and preaching away He is a great revivalist he is jest out of a revival whare there was 15 or 20 professors. his son preston is married to Molissa Allen Preston was a soldier in the federal army three years Marshel Greenlee is also married to a Miss Collins a daghter of George Collins Aunt Elisabeth Biddle is stil living Her son Robbert went in the rebble army and died Aunt livisa is a living in kentuckey uncle Joseph died in the State of kentuckey while a soldier in the federal Army. Old. uncle John Daniel is dead he died last June was a year ago William Daniel is living on James Sunderlands land and Hanner and Elisabeth Daniel is a living whare there father died on James Sunderlan,s land also Coesen John and Lou's at desires to know if her father and mother is stil living and how they are getting along well they stil a live and wel was the last time I saw them I have not saw them for some weeks I was in hopes that I would get to see them before I rote this letter Coesen William Greenlee is a living at New Market a shoe and boot making. James Mayes and his wife is a living in the neighborhood of Eli Mcdaniel,s he is a farming for a living his eldest son was married last week I learned to day. Dear Uncle I have a Grate deel that i desire to write a bout but it is now nearly Sun Set and I want to put this in the office ;in the morning I can say to you that I have saw a Grat many upes and downs Since I saw you last and a specally during the rebelion I was a union man died in the wool and I am stil one and a posed to cecession and rebelion I was not a soldier during the war but was a part of the time a prisnor in madison Georgia and after I was releast and came home I went though the rebble lines in to kentucky Expecting to Join the federal army but was taking sick and had like to have died after I got well and the opportunity I Came back home and hired a boy to make a little somthing to support my family and I lay in the bresh in connection with many others hid from the rebbles Soldiers Whoo was at that time plundering and Robbing though Eastennessee it was During thie seasen that they Caught Brother William and George and Taken them to Knoxville and when they Refused to take the oath they put tem out in a lot and run them down and forsed them to take the oath and then sent ;them to port hudson missiippi and from there to raimon whare they Had a fight and the rebes got whiped and while they ware reteating the boys got a way from them and got with the yanks and the boyes has a heavey suit of damage against them in Court that is expected to come off this Court which is the fourth monday in this month We have a gradeel of excitement in Tennessee at this time our Election comes off Naixt thursday for Govener and legislators the Conservitives is in faver of universal sufferage while the radicals is opposed to it I must bring my letter to a close my Wife sins her best respects to you all She Sayes that She would like to see you all and converse with you fase to face.
