PARTIAL CAPTURE OF THE SOURCE-RECHARGE AREA OR THE TRANVERSE-LATERAL EXTENT OF THE PLUME

The splitting of the plume is achieved by re-directing outer ground-water flowpaths that are free of contamination to flush out that portion of the plume of contaminated ground water that is immediately downgradient of the capture zone.
Plume splitting requires that the width and depth of the capture zone exceed the transverse-lateral extent of the plume and the source-recharge area. When the width and depth of the capture zone is smaller than the transverse-lateral extent of the plume or does not fully extend about the source-recharge area, then the plume will not be split into two portions. There may be enough re-direction of the clean, outer ground-water flowpaths so that the width and depth of the plume, downgradient of capture zone, is decreased in areal extent. Sufficient re-direction of clean, outer ground-water flowpaths will sculpt the plume into an isthmus-like shaped mass, but still not split.
