The NANCY 1873
Nancy, schooner: Totally wrecked on the New River bar on May 3, 1873,
when leaving on a sailing cruise. The wind fell away and the sweeps were taken out,
but the ebb tide caught the vessel’s stern, and, as she had lost steerage way, altered
her course. Three heavy seas then broke over her bow and drove the schooner stern
first onto the rocks. The pilot had hoisted the danger signals, but the master
disregarded them. The crew were saved by means of a line thrown to them by the
pilot.
