I woke up the next morning in a good mood. A little sore, obviously, but in high spirits. I hummed as I fixed myself breakfast. My mom sat at the kitchen table reading the newspaper and sipping coffee as I hummed. She had actually taken the day off to help me get ready for the prom that evening, which surprised me. Maybe she liked me more than I thought.
"My, you're in a good mood this morning," she said, looking up from the paper. I came and sat down across the table from her. "Excited about prom?"
"Mmm-hmm," I replied, still humming and dancing in my seat while I chewed my cereal. "Where's Toby?" I took another bite of cereal.
"At your father's. I figured since this is your special day, you wouldn't want him around to get in the way," Mom said.
"Thanks!" I said. I picked up my bowl and drank the milk out of it. The I put the bowl in the sink. "I'm going to go take a quick shower." I ran upstairs to my room. I pulled a clean bra and undies out of the chest of drawers. Then I got a white button up shirt and a pair of jeans out of my closet. As I was stripping down to my underwear, the phone rang.
"Hello?" I said cheerily.
"Rayne?" It was Ana. Her voice was hoarse, and I could hear her sniffling.
"Ana? What's wrong?" I asked, sitting down on my bed.
"He dumped me!" she cried.
"Kirk dumped you? When?" I asked, shocked.
"Last night," she replied.
"What a jerk! What reason did he give?" I responded angrily.
"He met someone else. Some girl in his judo class," Ana said. "Rayne . . . I feel so horrible. Now I have a dress for the prom, but no date."
"I'm really sorry, Ana," I said sympathetically. "Well, do you want to come with Taylor and me anyway?"
"No. I'd feel like the third wheel, and I don't want that," she said.
"If only we could find someone who'd agree to go at the last minute," I said. Suddenly a light bulb went off in my head. I knew the perfect person. "That's it!"
"What's it?" And asked. She blew her nose.
"Find you another date!" I exclaimed happily. "And I know just the guy!"
"Who? What are you cooking up in that brain of yours, Raynie?" Ana asked suspiciously. "All I have to say is, you'd better not fix me up with some scum-of-the-earth guy. Remember Dwayne Phillips?" Dwayne had been an old friend of mine that I fixed up Ana on date with a long time ago. Needless to say, the evening did not go well, and it ended with her kicking him in the nuts.
"Don't worry about a thing, An! We'll pick you up at 7:00, okay?" I responded.
"Alright," she said hesitantly. "But he'd better be nice, whoever he is!"
"He is, I promise!" I said. "Bye!" I hung up the phone, then picked it back up and dialed. The person on the other end picked up. "Hi, Taylor? Yeah, it's me, Rayne! How would Isaac feel about escorting someone to the prom?"
