Thanks, Glenn] ** ETHIOPIA [non]. Two new opposition radios begin broadcasting | Text of report by Ethiopian newspaper Poletika on 13 August Two [opposition] radio stations have begun broadcasting from the USA to Tigray [northern Ethiopia] listeners. "Voice of Tigrayans from North America" [Tigrinya: Dimtsi Tegaru Kab Semiren America] started broadcasting on 26 Hamle 1993 [2 August 2001] on 15685 kHz. It will be broadcasting every Thursday for about an hour at midnight [local time, 2100 gmt]. Meanwhile the radio station called "Voice of Martyrs" [Tigrinya: Dimtsi Sematat] started broadcasting yesterday at 8 [presumably 8 a.m. local time, 0500 gmt] on 3215 kHz in the 90 metre shortwave band. Source: Poletika, Addis Ababa, in Amharic 13 Aug 01 (via BBCM via DXLD) These programs come from an organization in Indiana; WWCR has been experimenting with different times since June. They were mentioned in the July schedule, but not currently in August as the times are uncertain. Previously tried Sunday 1630 on 15685, after the Latin Mass, but reception was unsatisfactory. The Thursday 2100 on 15685 worked better, and may be retained (right after WOR). These are half- hour programs, not one hour. The 0500 test on 3215 was on UT Sunday. Their website is http://www.ethiopiancommentator.com and e-mail articles@ethiopiancommentator.com They say their purpose is to provide lessons in democracy to Ethiopia (Adam Lock, WWCR, August 13, DX LISTENING DIGEST) From the above website: Radio Broadcast into Ethiopia Successful! The second test run of Dimtsi Tegaru Kab Semien America radio broadcast into Ethiopia was very successful! According to reports reaching the ETHIOPIAN COMMENTATOR, on August 2, 2001, the mid night skies over Addis Ababa was saturated with the most famous song of our Wudib ``Wufer tebeges tegadalay Tigray`` launched via this voice of our martyrs, Dimtsi Tegaru Kab Semien America! The sound quality was excellent. ETHIOPIAN COMMENTATOR salutes those so many Tegaru who worked so hard to make this voice of democracy possible! The ETHIOPIAN COMMENTATOR has also received word that two other radio broadcasts from different stations will be tested in the next few weeks. Another undated page says: Radio Broadcast to Ethiopia There will be two radio broadcast test runs this week. The first one, Dimtsi Tegaru Kab Semien America (temporary name) will run on Thursday (tomorrow) at midnight Ethiopian time or at 2100 UTC European. To listen to this broadcast, please turn your short wave radio to the 19.1 meter band or if you have a digital radio, tune it to the frequency of 15685 khz. IMPORTANT: YOU MUST SWITCH YOUR RADIO FROM the "LOCAL" TO THE "DX" POSITION (THE SWITCH FOR THE DX IS OFTEN LOCATED ON THE SIDE OF THE RADIO). IF YOU DO NOT SELECT THE DX POSITION, YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO LISTEN TO THE BROADCAST! The second broadcast, Dimtsi Si-wu-at (temporary name), is scheduled for this coming Sunday morning at 2 AM Ethiopian time or 0500 UTC. To listen to this broadcast, please tune your radio to the 90 meter band or if you have a digital radio, log in the frequency of 3215 khz. You may be able to hear this broadcast without having to switch your radio to the DX position. However, if your radio does not receive the signal at this setting, please switch to the "local" position! We urge those of you in the middle East and East Africa and of course in Ethiopia, to let us know of the quality of the signals by e- mailing to the ETHIOPIAN COMMENTATOR, Deki Alula, Ras Alula.Net or Tigray.Net Also there is a link to a number of audio files at: http://www.ethiopiancommentator.com/dejenradio/index2.html the first of which is: Dimsti Hafash Tigray: Test Run On Sunday: http://www.ethiopiancommentator.com/dejenradio/dimtsitigray.ram Which appears indeed to be a radio broadcast, mentioning meter band near the start. The last seven minutes are music, with no sign-off announcement. There are also a large number of editorials and articles in English on the site, if you want to try to figure out where they are coming from politically (Glenn Hauser, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ###
