(Corrects an item under this heading in DXLD 0-170) NA-213. (CORRECTION). Last week it was reported that the "Magnolia DX Association" was going to be active from Dauphin Island in late February. We stated that Dauphin Island was in Alaska, this is incorrect. It is a part of Alabama (KB8NW/OPDX January 8/BARF-80 via John Norfolk, OKCOK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Know your state abbrs! (gh) Glenn, The last time I looked, Dauphin Island was in Alabama, not Alaska (Larry Muenzler, DXLD) ** ALGERIA. Mohammed, 7X4AN, has been active on 10 meters CW/SSB between 1330-1600z. Watch around 28010 kHz and between 28400 and 28500 kHz. Also, watch around 7001 kHz after 2130z. This past weekend Sadek, 7X4LS, was spotted around 28475 between 1530 and 1600 (KB8NW/OPDX January 8/BARF-80 via John Norfolk, OKCOK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** ARGENTINA. BBC Mundo, Buenos Aires, December 30, 0643-0830 on 1670 kHz, MW X-band stn from Buenos Aires was heard here in Japan, thanks to a tip from Conección Degital via DXLD. Program was seemingly entitled "Los Clásicos" playing non-stop classic mx. ID's were given as follows: "En el aire, 1670 AM, Buenos Aires, Argentina, todo ... por BBC.", "LOS CLASICOS desde la BBC de Londres.", etc. (Shoji YAMADA, Tokyo, Japan, RNM, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** ARUBA. Start looking for Alan, K4AVQ, next weekend as P40AV. He will be there Jan 13-21st. He states that he will start on 10 meters, if open, and then work the lower bands. Suggested frequencies are: 28500, 28495, 21300, 14155, 14205, 14255, 7150, 3535-45 and 1825. Alan will also try to accommodate special requests for CW and Phone on any band needed when the traffic is low. He will also listen for QRP and Mobile stations. QSL via: Alan B Caplan, 14020 140th Court, Apple Valley, MN 55124-9422 USA (KB8NW/OPDX January 8/BARF-80 via John Norfolk, OKCOK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** AUSTRALIA [non]. Radio Australia`s new relay, and new service in Khmer, via the Kranji (Singapore) relay, noted here in Melbourne on 9730, *2300-2330* at very good level, Jan 8. If we hadn`t been forewarned, we could be excused for thinking that this is merely a new channel for Shepparton. Is this REALLY Kranji? If so, they are hurling lots of kW in a southerly direction, and at 2300, propagation into Melbourne from the Singapore area is very chancy, even at the best of times, in our midsummer. My spies tell me that antenna azimuth for this is 010 degrees, with 100 kW (Bob Padula, Melbourne, Jan 7, Electronic DX Press via DXLD) ** BANGLADESH. Stig, S21YJ, was heard this past weekend on 14190 kHz around and after 0200z. QSL via SM4AIO (KB8NW/OPDX January 8/BARF-80 via John Norfolk, OKCOK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** BELGIUM. Frans Vossens is ill and Radio World on RVI will be off for three weeks beginning today. Since the thing I most remember about the 12/31 program was thinking "What the hell is he doing out of bed?" this is not very surprising (Joël Rubin, NY, Jan 7, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** BOTSWANA. Barry/ZS1FJ and Gerald/ZS1GRM are planning to be active from here starting around 1800z, Sunday, January 14th and continuing until late Saturday the 20th. They have requested the callsign A24DX, however, they are having difficulties with the authorities who want them to use the callsign A24/homecall. Activity will be on all bands, mostly SSB on frequencies which will not interfere with the 3Y0C operation. Therefore, suggested frequencies are 28450, 21270 and 14270 kHz at the appropriate times for propagation. On 40 meters they will transmit at 7080 kHz and receive split between 0300-0400z, listening to stateside stations for advice on what frequency to use to suits them. The same will be applied to 80 meters. Barry states that if there should be a demand, they will be active on the WARC bands (18145 and 24950 kHz). They will use an A3S and G5RV antenna with the max power output. They plan to be on from 0300z until, probably, 2200z. QSLs to ZS1FJ (KB8NW/OPDX January 8/BARF-80 via John Norfolk, OKCOK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** BOUVET ISLAND. Chuck, 3Y0C, was heard over the weekend on 40 meters SSB for about an hour on 7052 and 7062 kHz between 0400 and 0515z. He was also heard on 20 meters SSB Saturday and Sunday, as well as 12 meters on Friday. His activity may seem short, but this is due to his work schedule which is very demanding, and on most days he can only squeeze 10 minutes in at a time during his breaks to get on the radio. So please be patient with him. Chuck understands the high demand for Bouvet, and remember, he is only a one man operation. The following press release below will explain it more. QSL Manager Mac, WA4FFW, reports that he spoke with 3Y0C on 01/06/01. Chuck has been off the air the past few days because a storm blew down antennas again. Time and weather allowed him to get the beam up 25 feet today. He has the vertical repaired, but because of a storm closing in, he will not put it up until after the storm clears. They have developed an oil leak in the generator, and attempted repairs have not been successful. They can use it but only for 2 hours a day which is sufficient to charge the batteries. He is unable to use the linear without the use of the generator. Chuck will be on as many bands as possible and explains that one of the reasons for such short runs sometimes is that he is trying to work a few stations between other duties to provide as many contacts as possible. He wants to remind the DX fraternity that he is aware of the need for Bouvet Worldwide. However, he is on an official scientific expedition, with specific duties, not a DXpedition. He is trying to give the world as many contacts as the situations there will allow. Because he is on at various times, he has been available to all parts of the world. What must be recognized is the fact that he is not on the same time each day, nor is he always on the same length of time because of his duties. Mac, WA4FFW, also announced that the QSL address for the 3Y0C QSL cards is as follows: Mark McIntyre, WA4FFW, 2903 Maple Ave., Burlington, NC. 27215 USA. Mac advises that some cards have already arrived. He asked earlier that they not be sent until "this announcement". None have been opened, but he states that he hopes those already received have sufficient postage based on the new postal rates, otherwise they will be returned via bureau. He also would like to inform the international community that the cost to mail a QSL to a foreign country has increased as well effective January 8, 2001. Mac reports he will not have logs until Chuck returns in March, so no QSLs can go out until he has arrived back stateside. Mac said that the delay in announcing the address was to allow the implementation of the new US postal rates. This was done so everyone would have the correct return postage preventing their direct card being shipped via the bureau. He said the reason was based on the postal increase and not that he was moving. He would like to inform all that he has no plans to relocate his antenna farm by moving as he read on the internet was the reason (KB8NW/OPDX January 8/BARF-80 via John Norfolk, OKCOK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** BURMA. What seems to be The Burmese Defence Forces Station was heard with quite good strength on 6570 kHz from 1355 and still now at 1515. Very beautiful, oriental music played and a male talked sometimes like religious. Interference from radio amateurs [sic], but otherwise (especially when there was music) the signals were strong. Is there anybody out there who has got a proper address to write to - or has ever got any answer from that station? Best wishes and 73 from (Björn Fransson, Gotland, Sweden, Jan 7, HCDX via DXLD) ** BURMA. Also heard very well on 6570.0 kHz here in Denmark from tune in at 1505 UT. From 1530 some co-channel [sic] interference from Pyongyang very strong on 6575. (Had to use USB because of some Italians on 6570 LSB). Myanmar was still audible around 1615 but gone at retune 1700, so I guess s/off was at 1630 or just prior to 1700. But are we sure it`s Myanmar and what`s the real name of the station? Still "Defence Forces Broadcasting Unit" as per WRTH 2001? Not listed in PWBR 2001 nor in the Klingenfuss Frequency Guide 2001. Best 73s (Stig Hartvig Nielsen, Denmark, hard-core-dx Jan 7, via DXLD) ** CANADA. Just a note to advise that the QSLs for AM 740 will be printed within the next 2 weeks. We hope to mail out the first ones before the end of the month. We will keep you updated via this forum. Thanks for your anticipated patience (Brian Smith, AM 740 QSL Manager, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** CANADA. CJRT is still carrying its BBC comedy strip, 6:30-7 pm CT weekdays, including Just A Minute, UT Tuesday 0030. Their new black website has links which are almost invisible, but I finally found the audio page: http://www.jazz.fm/livejazz.eht (Glenn Hauser, Jan 8, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** CANADA. Was interested to read Walt`s original post on 6160, and I`ve noted the same unusual reception several times I've checked since then. This time of year CKZU comes in here throughout the daylight hours, and today such was the case as normal. By 0000 UT CKZN had come up, and the two stations were about even. The CBC news was broadcast on both, with CKZN about a half second behind. After the news at 0004, Vancouver gave the weather forecast, while St. John`s ran a promo for a feature on the contest for the leadership of the Newfoundland Liberal party (and thus the premiership). Last night (0600 7 Jan) I heard CKZN with CBC news and into CBC Overnight, with not a trace of CKZU. Certainly an interesting phenomenon (Nigel Pimblett, Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada, Jan 8, hard-core-dx via DXLD) ** CONWAY REEF. According to Raymundo, YS1RR, the planning for the Conway Reef DXpedition is progressing on a "fast track". Operators YT1AD, YU1RL, YU1NR, YU1FW, YU7AV, YU6AO (YZ7AA), YS1RR, Z32AU and Z32ZM are expected to operate from here (refer to OPDX.482/488) from February 19-28th. Their callsign will be announced on February 18th. They have announced the following suggested modes and frequencies: CW - 1825, 3505, 7003, 10104, 14020, 18020, 21020, 24896, 28020, 50105 SSB - 1835, 3795, 7075, 14195, 18145, 21295, 24945, 28495, 50125 Digital - 1835, 3575, 7035, 14075, 21075, 28075 SSTV - 3723, 7035, 14230, 21340, 28680 kHz ADDED NOTE: Receiving frequencies will be 5 to 30 kHz higher than transmitting frequencies. Additional information will be given during operation time. QSL via YT1AD: Hrane Milosevic, 36206 Vitanovac, Yugoslavia. Raymundo reports that as in all DXpeditions, they are short of funds and your donations will be very helpful to make this operation a great success and any small or big donations are welcome. Donations can be sent to YS1RR: Raymundo Rodríguez, P. O. Box 32, San Salvador, El Salvador or to VIPSAL 682, P.O. Box 02-5364, Miami, FL 33102-5364, USA. Please visit the Conway 2001 Web Page at: http://www.kragujevac.co.yu/3d2 This is under construction and will be updated frequently (KB8NW/OPDX January 8/BARF-80 via John Norfolk, OKCOK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** COSTA RICA. R. Pampa, Nicoya, December 30, 1125-1209, on 4260.66 kHz, to my surprise, this Costa Rican harmonic was also heard here in Japan! Almost non-stop salsa & merengue excepting TC by YL until 1200, then religious program. ID was given as "... en toda la familia desde Pampa ... el mundo." Thanks DXLD for many tips (Shoji YAMADA, Tokyo, Japan, RNM, DX LISTENING DIGEST) BTW, must be Malm`s unID under PERÚ in DXLD 0-170 (gh) ** COSTA RICA. Dear Glenn, Heard RfPI on 7480 till abrubt sign off at 0653 today January 7th. Is "normal" close down still at 0600? And any news on the plans of a usb service on 7480 after 0600? Per the most recent info the schedule is: 7480 kHz 30 kW 0300-0600 (or is it 0000-0600?) 15049 kHz 10 kW 2200-0400 21815 kHz (usb) 3 kW 1200-0400 If so this would mean that the station is completely silent from 0600 to 1200 UT!? Best 73s (Stig Hartvig Nielsen, Denmark, DXLD) I too have noted them running well past 0600, but I think this is part of normal variation for them and would not depend on it. I believe 7480 is still not coming on before 0200 or so. Yes, it has been completely silent 0600v-1200v for quite some time. As I reported recently, they are trying to get the 7480 antenna raised up to its proper height. After that is accomplished, I suppose they will work on switching to 15065 and eventually to SSB overnight. 15049 is sometimes on before 2200, and 21815-USB nominally closes at 2400* (Glenn Hauser, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** CROATIA [non]. Re: We thought relays via Germany had stopped long ago, and indeed nothing audible on 9925 at 0014 check Jan 6, but here is the latest DTK schedule showing the Croatian Information Centre ... (gh) I guess: The frequencies are registered for US CIC organization, on the conference in August 2000. But in November CIC had no funds to pay for that service via Jülich. As a "place holder" Deutsche Telekom reserve these entries till March 25, 2001. 73 wb df5sx (Wolfgang Büschel, Germany, Jan 8, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** CUBA. Radio Habana Cuba in English is now heard on 9830 kHz in USB 05-07 UT probably instead of 11705-usb. Noted today January 7th with a fairly strong signal on 9830-usb as well as AM on 9550 and 9820 kHz also in the clear. Nothing on 11705 (Stig Hartvig Nielsen, Denmark, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** DENMARK [non]. Dear Glenn - I guess I forgot to tell you where Peary Land and Station Nord is located - in case you do not know. It is in the most north eastern part of Greenland. 73, (Erik Køie, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** DOMINICAN REPUBLIC. 2700.09, Ondas del Yuna (2 x 1350 harmonic) Jan 6 at 1040, Bachata vocals, 1043 canned ID, fair to good signal (Mark Mohrmann, VT, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** ECUADOR. HD210A [sic] Instituto Oceanográfico de la Armada, Guayaquil, 3810 kHz, 0537-0601 Jan 7, very low signal (QSA 1-2), best heard in LSB: "...al oir el tono serán cero hora, 40 minutos, cero segundos..."; ID at 0559 but very, very low!!! (Daniele Canonica, Switzerland, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Daniele is not alone in mistaking the callsign of this one; I see it time and again. There is a very big clue in the name of the organization that the letters IOA appear after the 2, not one-zero-a. BTW, Yimber Gaviria has an unofficial website for it (gh, DXLD) ** EGYPT. SU3AM was heard this past weekend on 12 meters on 24950 kHz between 1300 and 1400z. QSL via DL1FCM. English program with opening music and opening announcement, and talks. Signal became very weak and faded out around 0115. Now VOI seems to use 9525 kHz only 9552.5 RRI Makassar. Dec 31 0752-0805*. Advertisement, dangdut music, ID at 0802 as "Inilah Radio Republik Indonesia Makassar, Programa Satu". Suddenly finished at 0805. USA/Pacific: Satellite for US digital radio blasts off from Sea Launch | Text of report by Radio Australia on 8 January A telecommunications satellite has been launched into orbit from waters east of Kiribati. The satellite took off from the offshore launch pad Sea Launch, located in international waters near Kiribati`s easternmost island of Kiritimati. The satellite`s owners say it will transmit state-of-the-art digital audio radio programming directly to cars, homes and portable radios. Sea Launch says the satellite is one of two that the Washington DC-based XM Satellite Radio Inc intends to put into orbit. The satellites, called Rock and Roll, will transmit up to 100 channels of digital-quality music, news, sports, talk, comedy and children`s programming to subscribers across the United States. [Re: DXLD 1-002, 1-003] I doubt the jamming you refer to is in any way connected with Voice of the People of Kurdistan - which is a long-standing Kurdish domestic broadcaster based in Sulaymaniyah, in the Kurdish autonomous area of northern Iraq (Iraqi Kurdistan). It operates a very stable transmitter on 6995 kHz. It does not use 7100 kHz and certainly does NOT transmit from Iran. Nor is it subject to jamming from Iraq. The source of your frequency-hopping jammer is far more likely to be IRAN. The jamming is probably aimed at the Iranian opposition station Voice of the Mojahed which hops all over the place, including frequencies in the 40m ham band. Voice of the Mojahed has been around for many years along with its frequency-hopping Iranian jammers, and is well known to broadcast DXers. I am therefore very surprised that a respectable organisation such as the ARRL should get it so wrong. Could you pass this on to Brennan Price as I don't have his email address. 73s (Dave Kenny, British DX Club, via Bill Smith, TX, DX LISTENING DIGEST) I was just about to reply to this, to point out that the ARRL has got things completely back-to-front, when I read the comments from Olle Alm and Hans Johnson in Glenn Hausers`s DXLD 1-003. Olle and Hans have got it absolutely right, so there is little more to be said. These jammers are Iranian, not Iraqi, and are aimed at broadcasts out of (not into) Iraq. And they (the broadcasts and the jamming) have been going on for years, not months. As Hans says, Voice of the People of Kurdistan has nothing to do with all of this. I wonder if the ARRL would like to share the evidence that led them to "know exactly what this is" (Chris Greenway, England, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Some who hate to admit the ARRL could be so wrong question the credentials of those quoted in this and previous issue. For those who do not know: Chris Greenway and Dave Kenny both are professional monitors working for BBC Monitoring (speaking for themselves here); Olle Alm is a highly respected longtime monitor known for his detailed observations of technical clues leading to the identification of transmitter sites; Hans Johnson, head of Cumbre DX, among other things, speaks Arabic. The facts could also have been researched in a number of (non-amateur) DX publications. We expect to see a correxion in the next edition of the ARRL Letter (gh, DXLD) ** ISLE OF MAN. DX Information from the British DX Club (BDXC-UK). From: http://www.manxradio.com/News/welcome.html Monday January 8th It is hoped the independent inspector`s report on the proposed long wave radio station antenna in Bride will be arriving in the Island tomorrow. The Isle of Man International Broadcasting Company wants to establish a Manx based station which would be able to broadcast to most of the United Kingdom. Objectors have voiced concerns about the safety of the proposed antenna and the need for the station at all. The report was originally due in November, but the evidence required further attention from the Inspector. The project is regarded as one of national importance, and any decision will be "fast tracked", which means the report will be considered by the Council of Ministers for a decision rather than going through the normal planning process. The Council of Ministers will meet this Thursday and is expected to consider the report then (via Mike Terry, BDXC-UK via DXLD) ** KURDISTAN. Radio-4, 7295, Jan 1 at 2252 presumed this one with lively DJ in English, lots of chatter about the New Year; gave phone number at 2254 and went into pop vocal. Woman at 2300 in what seemed news. Far too choppy for any sustained readability -- not surprising when you consider that Malaysia is a straight shot over the North Pole from here. At the same time, signal on 7270 with talk by man was probably Sarawak; usually this freq is covered by Spain (Bob Hill, MA, Electronic DX Press via DXLD) ** MESHIMA ISLAND. Masa, JA6GXK, will be active from Danjo Archipelago (Meshima Island) between Janaury 8-14th. This is not a DXpedition and he will be active in his spare time. His planned operating schedule is as follows: January 8th - 0100-0800z and 1000-1100z January 9th - 1000-1400z January 11th - 1000-1100z Janaury 12th - 1000-1400z January 13th - 0100-0230z January 14th - 0100-0800z Suggested frequencies are: 14260 or 21260 ( both +/- 10 kHz). Hi everyone, I had a nice surprise today when the phone rang at work and it was Dick Speekman calling to say hello. For those who don`t remember, Dick used to work at Radio Netherlands and presented DX Jukebox for a time in the 70`s. Unfortunately as he was on a flying visit, we were not able to meet face to face (in fact we have never met). But I was able to ascertain that Dick is in good health, not yet (quite) 60, and now runs his own small packaging firm based in Adelaide, Australia. His Aussie accent seems a lot stronger than I remember it, but maybe that`s the memory playing tricks. Dick subscribes to the Media Network newsletter, and still listens to the major international broadcasters, so he really ought to join this group! Until he does, he asked me to pass on his best wishes to all those of you who rememember him. BTW he also mentioned that he was unable to see another former colleague, Jim Vastenhoud, as Jim was involved in a meeting of the local council this afternoon! So he`s obviously still leading an active life too (Andy Sennitt, Radio Netherlands, Jan 8, swprograms via DXLD) ** PANAMÁ (Attention Prefix Hunters!). Cam, HP1AC, informs OPDX that the "Radio Club de Panamá" has obtained a special permit from the Panamá Government Radio Dept. Office so any amateur radio operator in Panamá during the month of March 2001 will be able to use the special prefix 3E500 (Three Echo Five Zero Zero). This special prefix is to commemorate the 500th year anniversary of the Discovery of the "Isthmus of Panama" in March 1501 by Don Rodrigo de Bastidas. An example is Cam`s callsign (HP1AC), he will be using 3E500AC (Three Echo Fivehundred Alfa Charlie). A special QSL will be issued to confirm all QSOs during the month of March 2001. On January 5 a famous Russian DXer Nikolai Pashkevich died in Moscow, as a result of a tragic car-related accident. In just a few days, on January 15 he should have celebrated his 47th birthday... Nikolai started listening to the world-band stations already in the end of the 60s. Back then DXing was one of the most dangerous hobbies in the USSR. Eventually, Nikolai`s contacts with foreign stations and colleagues led to an official interrogation by KGB and threats of further action. However, he did not abandon his favorite hobby. In his spare time he even mastered English in order to become a more qualified monitor of the world bands. In the end of the 80s, with a dramatic change of a political climate in the USSR, Nikolai was invited to coordinate the frequencies for Christian broadcasts targeted at Russia and to prepare a monthly 30- minute DX-program carried by TWR, FEBC, HCJB, and later by Radio Center in Moscow. For years he faithfully served as a regional QSL manager for TWR and HCJB. He also became an official monitor for RL/RFE. In 1995-97 Nikolai published a bi-monthly DX-bulletin Info-Digest, based on materials received from Internet sources. He also actively contributed to various Russian and English-language DX publications and programs. Since 1998 he was one of the co-editors of the weekly Moscow DX Bulletin distributed by Internet. In 1999 he opened and moderated the first Internet-based discussion group for Russian- speaking DXers titled DX_Bistro. He participated in every annual conference organized by Moscow DXers. In recent years Nikolai coordinated the work of VoA/RL/RFE monitors throughout CIS and continued monitoring TWR and recording a monthly DX-program for this station. Despite his busy schedule Nikolai was always ready to help his colleagues in Russia and overseas. He closely followed the developments in the world broadcasting and generously shared his information with others. He personally mentored many young Russian DXers. Besides DXing, Nikolai enjoyed traveling and keeping in touch with his old and new friends throughout the world. Nikolai will be buried in accordance with the Russian Orthodox tradition on January 10. He is survived by his grieving wife and daughter. Nikolai`s untimely death is a huge loss for the whole Russian DX- movement. He will be greatly missed by his family and countless friends, both in his native land and overseas (Sergei Sosedkin, Jan 8, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Thank you, Sergei for conveying this tragic news. Nikolai was indeed an extremely valuable member of our DXing community. His loss will be felt by all avid DXers, especially those of us interested in broadcasting in the former Soviet Union. I can`t help but think of so many well known, and less well known individuals who have died in recent years from car accidents in the CIS. So tragic, and so preventable. Veechnaya Pamyat, Nikolai! I have to forward sad news from Moscow: Russian DX League is very sorry to tell DX community that Nickolay Pashkevich, one of the prominent figures in Russian and international DXing has passed away in a tragic accident in Moscow. Devoted to DX- hobby for over 30 years, he was known all over the world, professionally collaborated with leading radiostations and the most of DX - editions. We have lost a close friend, who had gone being so young. It is a painful loss, but he will never be forgotten, and his name will remain in the history of DXing (Anatoly Klepov, Moscow, Russia, via Kai Ludwig, Jan 8, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** RUSSIA. "It's not often you get a chance to bring in someone of John's stature and reputation," said Boyce. We still have conflicting info about the relay sites actually used by Herald Broadcasting Syndicate [Christian Science], thanks to WSHB`s refusal to reveal them. This schedule is compiled entirely from information supplied by the broadcaster and shows frequency useage only.`` In this, the only frequencies attributed to Saipan rather than WSHB are: 1000-1100 As 11870 1200-1300 As 5915 9880 1300-1400 As 7460 But from Nikolai Rudnev, Russia, in January NASWA LN, part of a long list of relays via Russia: 1200-1300 5915v 9880k 1300-1400 7460 i=Irkutsk k=Komsomol`sk v=Vladivostok Note that there is no letter after 7460, leaving the key i for Irkutsk unaccounted for in this particular item. Surely someone is in a position to know, and tell, the truth about this. And don`t forget Taiwan, which was previously designated in some versions as a site for them.
