For a week now I am hearing an un-announced new frequency [9580] for R. Australia. It "crash-starts" at 0800, sometimes a few seconds late and is clearly audible here under BBC WS from Skelton beamed 230 degrees with 300 kW to Australia/Pacific long path. The BBC txer goes off at 0805 at the end of the news when R. Australia is in the clear. I hear all listed frequencies for R. Australia at 0800; these are:- 5995 9710 12080 13605 15240 15415 17750 21725 which seems to account for all txers at Shepparton and Brandon. So where is this coming from? It is not listed on the R. Australia website http://www.abc.net.au/ra I have spoken today with Nigel Holmes, Frequency Manager for Radio Australia who told me that this was an additional frequency from Shepparton for the period of the Olympic Games in Sydney and that October 2nd was the last day. However, he plans to use that frequency at that time in the new schedule to be introduced end of october in lieu of 13605 which has serious interference from VOA Tinian on 13610. Having drawn his attention to the co-channel interference with the BBC WS, 9580 might not be brought up until 0805 (Morrison Hoyle, Foster, Victoria, Oct 3, DX LISTENING DIGEST) . ,--_|\ Morrison Hoyle - vk3bcy@qsl.net / Oz \ - Phone +61 (0)3 56891205 \_,--\_/ - PO Box 248, FOSTER, Vic 3960 Australia v However, 9580 is hardly new to RA, as it has been our best frequency in NAm for decades, perhaps not as early as 0800 recently (gh) That BBC transmission always ends at 0805 after the news at 0800. Of course you are right but 9580 has not been brought up until much later; currently it comes on at 1100 (Hoyle, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** AUSTRIA/UK. Merlin to broker airtime on Moosbrunn SW transmitter Text of press release from UK transmission company Merlin Communications on 10th October Merlin Communications has secured an exclusivity agreement with Radio Austria International to broker transmission facilities at their Moosbrunn site. The agreement will see Merlin internationally promote the Moosbrunn site and market the facility as part of its global network, providing primary coverage of Africa, the Middle East and Eastern Europe. The deal is the third exclusivity agreement Merlin has undertaken in the last 12 months, and aims to secure new short wave transmission customers for Moosbrunn, increasing significantly the number of hours Merlin places through the site in the near future. Rory Maclachlan, Merlin's Commercial Director said: "Radio Austria International's Moosbrunn facility offers exciting and flexible transmission facilities, we are delighted to have Austria as part of our global alliance." Roland Machatschke, Radio Austria International's Managing Director said: "Merlin Communications is the world leader in short wave transmission and I am excited to be involved with such an innovative and commercially focused company. Our relationship with Merlin will bring immense benefit to Radio Austria International and compliment our current market position." Meanwhile, we have a reply regarding the lack of English and Spanish on the 1500-1600 RCI 17865 relay (gh) Glenn, it was just another software bug. I suppose you are aware of the fact that the Austrian government cancelled the agreement to finance ROI. Before that our budget was cut - by almost 50%. ORF, the Austrian Broadcasting Company, promised to maintain an international service, from 2002 - but this would probably be the "home service link to Austrians abroad" and not a regular international service. Staff was reduced by 50%. Program output will be dramatically cut - we will relay home service programmes "in between", and sell airtime via Merlin. Part of that deal was that we moved from ORF-Center to Broadcasting House. Our new studio complex cum editorial office will be tiny-tiny (something like twice the space of our previous main control room). When we switched from analogue to digital we did that step by step. The digital service (editing, production, continuity... everything) was commissioned in late spring - six weeks before we were told we had to move. This time the whole system, down to the last cable, had to be dismantled and redone from scrap. Meanwhile we work right from our office desks ("Could you please be quiet for a moment, I'm having a phone interview") and in a single outdated mini-studio. We have to use the home-service software for continuity: it was not built for that purpose, and we suffer from all kinds of disasters: no transmission at all, wrong program, two programs at the same time ("stereo")... Our technicians are doing wonders: everything up within three months. We hope to be back on our own software in a week or two - just to re-write it in time for the winter schedule. Does this explain what happened? 73 de (Wolf Harranth, RAI, October 10, DXLD) ** BELARUS [non]. Dear DX-ers, According to Radio Racja website, their broadcast schedule appears to be as follows: 0400-0700 UTC - 612 kHz - via Radio Baltic Waves 1800-2000 UTC - 6165 kHz 0400-0600 UTC - 6035 kHz 1400-2200 UTC - 105,5 MHz FM (in the city of Białystok, Eastern Poland) [symbol between the A and the Y would be a crossed L -gh] On my website http://www.rybus.net YOU CAN FIND REAL AUDIO FILE WITH RADIO RACJA ID recorded from the internet. The internet address of Radio Racja is: http://www.racja.pl/ Under the address below you can get the information (in Belarusian) on audio on the web with Radio Racja broadcasts: http://www.racja.pl/efir/efir.htm Please note however, that for the time being there is only MP3 audio on demand available (real audio is planned for the future), and there is no real time streaming. No broadcast from the current day is available - only broadcasts from the day before and from the day before yesterday. To hear the audio you have to paste into your MP3 player (e.g. Winamp) the following two parts of the address: the unchanged one and the other part depending on the day and month of the specific broadcast you want to listen to: 1) First part of the address: http://www.racyja.pl/efir/ 2) Below you can find the example of the second part of the address: efir0710.mp3 (the above is appropriate when you want to listen to the broadcast from October 7, and so on). Important: to listen to the second hour of Radio Racja broadcast you have to add "2" before the period mark, at the end of the numbers indicating the month, e.g.: efir07102.mp3 Good luck, (Krzysztof Rybus, Poland, Oct 8, hard-core-dx via DXLD) ** COSTA RICA. RFPI 6969 has been missing UT Oct 8, 9 and 10. Wonder what the problem is? (gh) Glenn, Rotten luck. Burnt transmission line. We have the parts to fix it and James hopes to be back on the air in no less than two to three days. Meanwhile, our old standby, 15050 back to 24 hours. Great to hear the RTTY is gone! (-joe bernard, RFPI, Oct 10, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** CROATIA. Wolfgang mentioned in BC-DX the frequency registrations for Deanovec, while it seems to reflect the actual transmitter operation that HRT gives on its website. Hans Weber reported a couple of years ago the shortwave equipment at Deanovec as two 10 kW transmitters and a single 100 kW unit, while the antenna capacity is limited to two vertical monopoles and a rhombic; the RHO and one of the VM's can handle 100 kW, the other VM 10 kW only. In addition they have still the tiny 2 kW transmitter they used to start the shortwave operations; in previous seasons they used this rig to experiment with 13 metres transmissions. I guess the 100 kW unit is operational on 9830, as this is the strongest signal. [rather than several 100 kW] (Kai Ludwig, Germany, Oct 7, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** GREECE [non]. I expect there will be further disruptions in scheduling from Oct 29 with the end of DST – not necessarily simply shifting one UT hour later (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** ISRAËL. DX Information from the British DX Club (BDXC-UK). Since I reported Galei Zahal on unusual 2442.2 kHz back on 16th September I have been hearing it regularly here in Caversham UT evenings on this frequency. I originally thought it may have been a transmitter spur, but now believe it`s a genuine transmission on this frequency as in my 1974 edition of WRTH, 2442 kHz is listed under Galei Zahal as Tel Aviv with 1 kilowatt. So this may be an old transmitter reactivated. 73 (Alan Pennington - AOR 7030+/longwire, Caversham, England, Oct 10, BDXC-UK via DXLD) ** KOREA SOUTH. When interesting LA stations are reported on the Nordicdx web site, there are usually pointers, or references, to the original report. But when Mark Mohrmann recently attributed an ID to me and referred the users of his web page at http://homepages.together.net/~hackmohr/ to the "Dateline Bogotá" web site for further info and for the historical background, the Nordicdx web editor reedited the story, deleting the pointer to Mark`s home page, including instead a report, which is in contradiction to Mark`s and my own findings. More details about Radiodifusora Comercial La Voz de Naranjos and the inconsistencies of the report highlighted by the Nordicdx web editor can be found at http://www.algonet.se/~ahk/Dline95.htm Please look for 4300 in the frequency listing. In the 1996 log, there is a short entry for this station, on 4300.1 (Henrik Klemetz, Sweden, DX LISTENING DIGEST) The Peruvian station on 4300 featured on various RealAudio clips on Mark Mohrmann`s web site was identifying itself as Radiodifusora Comercial Naranjos, and the address was given as Avenida Cajamarca 464, Distrito Pardo Naranjos, Provincia de Rioja, Región de San Martín, Perú. When active, until the police raided the station in late 1995, the station also used to identify itself as "La Voz de Naranjos". Contrary to what has been posted on Mark´s web and on the Nordicdx/HCDX web site the station was not identifying itself as "Radiodifusión Comercial Naranjos" (nor "La Voz de los Naranjos") and the QTH is not "Narnajos" which is a typo, but rather Naranjos, which is a shortening of the town`s full name (Henrik Klemetz, Sweden, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** RWANDA/NAMIBIA/ANGOLA. Hi Glenn! Here are some tips for European DXers interested in African Radio: I have heard Radio Rwanda on 6055 at 2000-2100 as Radio Slovakia is off at 2000 (that will presumably be until the end of October, when time is shifted). French Programming of mainly music, ID a few minutes after 2000, sign-off with frequency announcements (FM freqs) in several languages plus national anthem at 2100. I believe this one hasn't been heard very often in Europe in the past years. Signal is fair. Namibia?: I believe it was NBC I heard several times recently at 0500-... on 7215, as there is a gray line at the beginning of autumn and the beginning of spring. Heavy QRM by Eastern European station. English language px with African music. Signal was relatively strong. Angola: RN Angola is on 7245 all evening. I caught it at around 2000, but at 2030 QRM is getting too strong. All heard with a 1955 Blaupunkt Virginia receiver :-). (Thorsten Hallmann, Münster, Germany, Oct 9, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** SERBIA. Hi, the main Yugoslav domestic radio program is now called "Novi Radio Beograd" - New Radio Belgrade. (Incorrect is "Novo Radio Beograd", mentioned elsewhere). On the air is more than one program - they call the program on 684 kHz "the First program". According to my monitoring of Yugoslavia in the MW band these days the situation is very quiet; on most of the frequencies that I can hear are local programs (666, 711, 1026, 1296, 1566 kHz) with relays of main newscasts from Belgrade // to 684 kHz. Now, with a new president, a new government and parliament, let us hope that also a new transmitter is going to appear on 684 kHz. The former high power transmitter has been damaged or smashed during NATO bomb attacks. Later a provisional low power transmitter has been put on the air. Also a studio-transmitter site link is provisional, that is the reason for a telephone-like sound. GOOD DX, (Karel Honzik, the Czech Republic, hard-core-dx Oct 7 via DXLD) ** SERBIA [and non]. Deutsche Welle has expanded its Serbian broadcasts by 30 minutes per day, a staff member announced today during a interview on the media magazine of DLF Cologne. During this talk also RTS was discussed; the DW staff member stated that it was the old heads (not the whole staff) who were forced to leave the building. I already tried to express my assumption that the RTS programming is still produced by the "old" broadcasters, as it sounded like professional programming that was broadcast late at night on Oct 5. I assume this also applies to Radio Yugoslavia. "B2-92" is now again just B92 and could return on its FM frequency, which was until now occupied by a false, regime-run "B92". This from Jörg Wagner; his German-language interview with a B92 staff member should be meanwhile available at http://www.radioeins.de/sendungen/apparat/aufnahme/ (Kai Ludwig, Germany, Oct 7, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** SERBIA. There have been strange occurrences on the Voice of Turkey recently. On October 6 the English programme via the internet (http://www.trt.net.tr), scheduled to run from 2030 to 2120, was replaced for the first 30 minutes by a programme in what I presume to have been Serbian. After two minutes' silence at 2100, the English service took over in the middle of a feature programme (I was unable to check whether English was on scheduled 9525 kHz as it was inaudible). At 2200 English was missing from both the internet and shortwave frequencies (13640 and 7190), replaced by one hour of Greek. On the following two days English was heard as normal. However, on October 9 at 2200, 13640 carried a Turkish programme in parallel with 9445 and 9460 while 7190 and the internet carried English. WRMI, new 15725 first heard at 1735 Oct 10, with some preacher, no comparison to pounding WWCR on 15685, even tho WWCR is more likely to skip over, and not beamed this way. Ditto weaker than other US stations on 15745, 15665, 15590. Still, 15725 clear of any interference and it beats 9955 which has nothing but Cuban commie jamming. Announcer at 1752 was not aware he was on the air, claiming 15725 was delayed by floods but would start sometime this week, at 9 am to 2 pm Pacific time [1600-2100 UT]. Believe he also said WBCQ2 would move from 9330 to 9335? After 1900 WRMI 15725 strength even compared unfavorably to nearby WYFR on 15715, which is beamed NE to Europe. 15725 off abruptly at 2028* Heavier modulation than some of the others, but telco-quality audio (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) WRMI test transmissions from October 9 (not from October 2): 1200- 2200 on NF 15725, 50 kW / 317 degrees to zones 2, 3 (Observer, Bulgaria via DXLD) I have always been a bit puzzled over the use of jammers. I fully understand the purpose of their use. However, 9955 for example, I live near Philly, PA and am on the back side of the xtmr in Miami and very rarely can ever pull anything from the freq short of the jammer. This a.m. a couple of times I had thought I hrd some classical mx but could have been mistaken. I have often wondered what the point of all this is if R. Miami broadcasts programming and no one can hear it. Yea, I know, that`s the idea. Seems the only folks making out in the deal are the oil companies who supply the energy to run the xmtrs. This has been going on for years now. R. Miami never changes freq and day after day the same thing. What a herrific waste of energy supplies and money on both parts. I sometimes think this is a battle to see who has enough money to continue this nonsense. First one out of oil loses (Bob Montgomery, PA, Oct 7, hard-core-dx via DXLD) I think this is a sensitive point to Jeff White at RMI. I posted a couple of years back that, during a cruise which circumnavigated Cuba, reception of RMI was dreadful, and in my opinion totally unusable. Jeff W. shot back with claims of many listeners on the island who have contacted the station claiming excellent reception. To put it mildly, I was sceptical (Walt Salmaniw, hard-core-dx via DXLD) +++++HUNTING HARMONICS+++++ Padula`s remark about harmonics being produced in the ionosphere is total nonsense, contrary to the laws of physics. There would have to be a device up there to produce the mixing (gist of response by George McClintock, TN, Oct 9, DXLD) A related subject is the Luxembourg effect, audio mixing in the ionosphere. Here`s something about it I found in a quick search: There is a very interesting ionospheric phenomena [sic], the Luxemburg Effect, that was exploited in the early days of the laboratory and was a precursor of many perturbation techniques now used in many fields. Telegren was the person who discovered the effect, namely that Radio Luxemburg would heat the electrons in the ionosphere and thus transfer the audio envelope on its signal to any wave traversing that portion of the ionosphere by modulating the absorption. Prof. Goldstein exploited and expanded this phenomena in the laboratory to identify and quantify many electron temperature dependent processes such as e-i recombination, electron-ion collision frequency, and any other electron collision process. He used two microwave signals, the "heating" wave and the "sensing" wave to examine these processes in the decaying portion or "afterglow" of a pulsed discharge. One of the unique modifications was to subject the plasma to a static magnetic field so that the electrons were in cyclotron resonance with either wave. All sorts of nonlinear phenomena from harmonic generation to modification of rate processes could be observed with relatively small microwave power (Ĺ 200 mW or less). ( http://radon.ece.uiuc.edu/gel_history.html via gh) That`s total nonsense too; as is the crossed field MW transmitting antenna (McClintock) A new electronic group has been set up for those listeners especially interested in receiving harmonics of normal transmissions. Yes, I Founded this list, I Am Based in Congleton, Cheshire, England (Tim Bucknall, UK, harmonics list via DXLD) UNIDENTIFIED. Hi Glenn: Over the past sesquimonth or so, I have noted an intermittent transmission on 4410.2 kHz. It consists of Christian music with Spanish lyrics. There is no announcement of any kind, just song after song, with about 5 seconds of dead air between. The signal strength is usually high. I believe this may be a test transmission. Last heard, Oct. 6 at 1010, with a good copy (David Hodgson, TN, Oct 10, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Possibly 3 x 1470 (gh) ###
