DX LISTENING DIGEST 00-55, April 21, 2000 edited by Glenn Hauser GLENN HAUSER on VOA COMMUNICATIONS WORLD. Once again this week, Kim Elliott invited us to provide the media news on his show. There should be considerably more of it on the Deluxe Version via VOA SSB, WRN, WWCR and WBCQ than on the VOA News Now shortened edition. The script will be posted shortly on the WOR website and presumably on the VOA CW website. For a complete schedule by automatic responder, E-mail cwschedule@voa.gov THIS WEEK ON WORLD OF RADIO 1033. See topic summary at http://www.angelfire.com/ok/worldofradio/wor1033.html WORLD OF RADIO ON WBCQ. We were missing from scheduled time of 2030 UT Friday on 9330-CUSB April 21. Allan Weiner says he had trouble with the transmitter, and did not get it on the air until 2045; a few minutes later we heard music on 9330.2 or so. Presumably, he still intends to broadcast WOR at that time. ** AFGHANISTAN. Hello Glenn, The Voice of Sharia from 19/04/00 transfers in Russian not from 1630 UTC, but from 1650. Frequency 7084. 73! Best regards, (Serg Shcherbakov, Semipalatinsk, Kazakhstan, April 20, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** AFGHANISTAN. Voice of Shari'ah Russian bulletin time changes; Text of report by Afghan Taleban radio on 18th April: We bring to your notice that from tomorrow, Wednesday 19th April, the broadcast time of our Russian programmes will be shifted from 2100 to 2120 hours Kabul time [from 1630 gmt to 1650 gmt]. Special Austrian Calls Information is circulating to the effect that public radio stations in Austria may now participate in contests on the amateur bands. This relates particularly to the Austrian Disaster Radio Service, part of the Austrian Amateur Radio Union. This year's All-Austria Contest will be the first time that such stations will participate, so here are the data. It takes place on the 1st of May from 0500 to 0800 UTC on the 80m band between 3,645 and 3,775 kHz. The calls to look for are as follows, where a dot represents a numeral: OEP..., the Federal Ministry of the Interior; OEC100, the Federal Foreign Ministry; OEY.. and OEY..., the Federal Ministry of Defence; OEH..., the Austrian Red Cross. Reports will be RS(T) plus a 3-digit serial number. (Radio Society of Great Britain GB2RS News, posted April 19, via John Norfolk, OKCOK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** CANADA. Just checked out 600 and 850 kHz this morning (April 21) at 1359 UTC, for the parallels of 940 News and Info 690 here in Montreal. Both 600 and 850 are now on continuous tape loops telling listeners to tune their receivers to the 940 and 690 frequencies. Looks like this might be the last weekend for 600 and 850 kHz. Will keep everyone posted on further developments. I will try to contact them today to find out when they are pulling the plug officially. My guess right now is probably at the end of this long weekend. (Sheldon Harvey, Greenfield Park, Quebec, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** FINLAND. YLE at 01-0113 4/18 dead air on 11985//13770, then end announcement in EE for YLE, then into presumed Finnish (Larry Russell, MI, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Same situation we noticed previously, believe was UT Sun 4/9. Someone asleep at the switch in the middle of the Finnish night when token English to NAm is supposed to be on? By now, the sun should be up... (Glenn Hauser, WORLD OF RADIO 1033, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** GERMANY. Some information about the Jülich site can be found at http://www.telekom.de/dtag/ipl1/cda/level3_a/0,3680,10110,00.html. Of special interest is a detailed description of the antenna complex; be aware of a line mess-up in the table (West Africa is actually 195 degrees and so on until Alaska = 340 degrees) and note especially the set-up of the curtains in a star with the transmitter building in the centre. This set-up was first used at Zeesen near Königs Wusterhausen until this site was completely dismantled and the equipment taken away into the USSR in 1945. One of the Zeesen transmitters stands until today at the Lithuanian Sitkunai site; the Zeesen grounds were later used by MfS for its biggest numbers station site. Also the Wertachtal antenna system consists on a large star. Happy Easter! (Kai Ludwig, Germany, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** GREECE. [SWL] Voice of Greece, 15650 kHz, Kavala with News in English, mainly about Greece/Turkey relations, 0600 to 0620 in English, then Greek, service to Australia, very clear, great modulation with transmitter (250KW) operated by VOA (Tim Gaynor, Queensland, April 18, swl@qth.net via DXLD) Since VOG is no help at all in publishing exactly when its token English newscasts are, we must put them together bit by bit (gh, WORLD OF RADIO 1033, DXLD) ** HUNGARY. Sad news to those of us who`ve listened to Radio Budapest for years. Long-time announcer Charlie Coutts died April 6. He was 79. Charles Taylor Coutts. He was due for an operation. For those who may not recall him, he had the Scottish accent and was formerly head of the English service. There was an on-air tribute and excerpts from E-mail condolences from listeners, Sunday April 16. Some staff members talked about working with Charlie. (Bob Thomas, CT, April 16, DX LISTENIING DIGEST) ** INDONESIA. Glenn, To avoid unnecessary repetition (and $$$) you might like to know that VOI has been announcing 9525 11785 and 15150 for many months during several of its English and non-English broadcasts. This should not be construed as actual broadcasting on those 3 channels simultaneously. Station is currently adhering to the sked as given in WRTH2000. Regards (Bob Padula, Australia, April 21, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** INTERNATIONAL VACUUM. DX Information from the British DX Club (BDXC-UK). Just tuned in WRN on Sky digital 12.110 GHz Horizontal. May be tests as not on the channels list yet. Once you have tuned it in, go to services then other channels and then WRN to listen to it. (Mike Terry, British DX Club April 21 via DXLD) This additional source for World Radio Network, presumably including WORLD OF RADIO, has been delayed in starting, previously expected in March (gh) ** INTERNATIONAL VACUUM. On Easter Saturday and Sunday, Radio Caroline´s satellite service will be transmitted live via the Internet. http://www.radiocaroline.de/ Radio Caroline broadcasts via Astra 1C satellite to the UK and Europe, transponder 35, 10.994 horizontal (behind TV Travel Shop/Challenge TV - on most sets this is on channel 35), audio 7.38/7.56, every Friday (from 18.00h till 24.00h BST /19.00h till 01.00h EST), Saturday and Sunday (from 08.00h till 23.00h BST / 09.00 till 24.00h EST). (Mike Terry, UK, April 21, DX LISTENING DIGEST) EST here must mean European Summer Time! (gh) ** IRAN. VOIRI, 11740, very strong here with mailbag in English, UT Fri April 21 at 2155 (Chris Hambly, Victoria, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Not here! Totally blocked by WYFR with IS (gh, OK, DXLD) ** IRAN [non]. >>A quick check of the new clandestine operation from Grigoriopol [Radio Voice of Iran -- is this really new?? -gh]<< At least new from Grigoriopol`. Otherwise I was not aware of a ``Voice of Iran`` until now, but I am no expert in this field; actually I am not even sure whether or not there are connections between this station and ``Radio Internationale``, which was on 7520 and is according to the Merlin operational schedule now 1730-1800 (except on Mondays and Wednesdays) on 15565 from Grigoriopol`, too. While checking today at 1840 their broadcast had lots of hum, interrupted by every cut, so it was no feed disturbance but a spoiled record, also the lack of brilliance seems to have this cause and no telephone feed as I first supposed; the whole thing sounded like recorded with a DEM 20 rig. At tune-in I came across somebody`s phone talk in English, some phrases around ``future of our country``. (Kai Ludwig, April 20, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** ISRAËL. Israël Radio on new 9345, April 15 0315-0335+ in Hebrew, mostly continuous local music, // 9390, 11590, all very good. Is 9345 a punch-up error for 9435? Kenya Radio Society Web Site The Amateur Radio Society of Kenya has just set up its own web site. It contains licensing and general information, that would be of particular use to prospective visitors to the country. It can be accessed via the RSGB web site (Radio Society of Great Britain GB2RS News, posted April 19, via John Norfolk, OKCOK, DX LISTENING DIGEST). It's http://www.qsl.net/arsk/ I (Norfolk) checked there and excerpted the following: AMATEUR RADIO SOCIETY OF KENYA POSTAL ADDRESS: P.O. Box 45681, Nairobi, KENYA. E-mail: alleyne@africaonline.co.ke WELCOME TO KENYA AND THE ARSK WEBSITE. IN KISWAHILI WE SAY "KARIBU", OR IN THE PLURAL "KARIBUNI!" WE HOPE THIS INFORMATION WILL BE OF USE TO EVERYONE INTERESTED IN KENYA - 5Z4 LAND. NETS/BULLETINS: Every Sunday morning on 7075 kHz, 0600Z (0900 local). Run by Hermann Sachse, 5Z4RT. Usually there are about 8 - 12 participants and amateurs in neigbouring countries are welcome to join in when conditions permit. GENERAL INFORMATION: There are only about 40 (or fewer) amateur licenses issued and current in Kenya, and several of the holders live abroad. Only about 10 are active. The Society Station 5Z4RS, based at the HQ & Shack, sadly is seldom on the air due to shortage of operators. The usual Region 1 amateur band limits are authorised in Kenya, BUT NOT 6 m or 30 m. On VHF the 2 m band is limited to 144 - 146 MHz. The Society supports Radio Scouting and the annual Jamboree on the Air (JOTA) in conjunction with the Kenya Scouts Association as far as the number of licensed operators allows, and has recently assisted in the formation of a thriving Radio Club at Starehe Boys Centre and School in Nairobi. This Club has attracted so much interest that it's membership has had to be limited to fifty. The Society also sponsors amateur radio activity at The Hodari Boys Club in Nairobi. Their station is 5Z4HB. The power supply in Kenya is nominally 240VAC, 50 Hz. Interruptions can be expected due to weather and loadshedding. The major radio suppliers have Agencies in Nairobi, but some spares may take time to obtain. East African Time is UTC +3 hours. CUAGN SN! We look forward to working you on the air, seeing you here in person and hopefully in the not too distant future we may be able to assist and advise in getting visitors' licenses. Watch this space in case we get good news for intending visitors. As we say here: "Kwaheri ya kuonana!" - we'll be seeing you! The ``Other`` Mexican Shortwave Stations Last time we mentioned the best known Mexican SW stations, but what about the others which are not heard outside our country. It is unfortunate that many stations have SW frequencies assigned, but do not have the least intention of reactivating them; we are not going to bother to mention them, but instead the ones which do have some interest in getting on the air, and are making some effort despite current problems. XEUJ, Radio Linares, from Mexico`s newest industrial city. In contact with Lic. Sergio Jahaziel Becerra, Director General, he informs us that they are carrying out negotiations and necessary technical adjustments to improve the signal and increase coverage. Nevertheless, he does not give any tentative airdate. So we shall have to wait a while longer for its possible reactivation. We suppose they will use the same frequency as before, 5980v. Good luck and we hope to have news soon. Those interested in writing to the station may do so at: XEUJ, Apdo. Postal 62, 67001 Linares, N.L. XEYU, Radio UNAM, in spite of having some excellent installations, and renovated equipment for MW and FM, it is a real shame that its SW transmitter has not been updated, and is now more than 50 years old (I believe). We have already commented on the trouble the technical personnel have to go through when some tube quits working, and replacing it causes work and above all monetary costs. Even so, a great effort is being made to get the signal on 9600 kHz, which to tell the truth is very difficult to hear outside Mexico. A few months ago, our greatest seat of learning was ``kidnapped`` by a few ``miscreants`` who misrepresented their demands with disorder, destruction, instransigence, false promises to their ``devoted strikers``, passing themselves off as white doves, innocent students, victims of repression by University authorities. (Excuse me for mixing a personal opinion with radio; I should be impartial.) [This refers to the protracted student strike at UNAM, which virtually closed down the institution -gh] Months ago one could hear it, tho with a weak signal at midday, but now there is nothing, although I eventually could detect a carrier, nothing else. We hope this fault is not due to the old transmitter. So I would like to invite everyone to write to Radio UNAM asking them to improve their SW equipment, insofar as possible: Radio UNAM, Adolfo Prieto #133, Col. Del Valle, 03100 México, D.F. XEFT, La Jarocha. We heard comments last year from its director about a possible reactivation of 9545 kHz. Lamentably, it seems they have not been successful, since several months have gone by without any news. We suppose they are still working on this, but since there has been no response to our inquiry, we are unaware of the details. La Jarocha, Apdo. Postal 21, 91701 Veracruz, Ver. XERTA, Radio Transcontinental de América. Several months after turning off the transmitter for an improvement in its power and antenna, it has not resumed being heard on 4800 kHz. We had been informed that they would resume programming in December, probably on new 4810 to avoid interference from R. Cultural [rather, Radio Buenas Nuevas, Guatemala -gh] and from a station in China [? On 4800? gh] We have not been able to get in contact by telephone with the manager Ing. Roberto Nájera to comment on these details, so for now we continue awaiting its reactivation. Radio Huayacocotla continues broadcasting on 2390 kHz. La Voz de los Campesinos is a community radio station, really worth tuning in; for now they have no QSL cards, but certainly the director, Lic. Martha Silvia Ortiz will reply in a kind manner. Remember that it uses only 500 watts. Contact XEJN-OC at: Radio Huayacocotla, A.P. 13, 92600 Huayacocotla, Ver. The Voice of Mongolia, Ulan Bator, has advised details of its summer schedule, and English programs are listed as follows: On 12085 1200-1230; on 12085 and 9720 1500-1530 and 2000-2030. The Japanese services have been retimed, and are now listed for 12085 from 1030-1100 and 2100-2130 (Bob Padula, Electronic DX Press April 18 via DXLD) ?? This looks just like the old sked which was obsolete as of March 26, since English has been confirmed at 1030 and Japanese at 1200, at least, and 12015 replaced 9720 for the other English broadcasts. Either VOM has suddenly reverted to its winter schedule or this info is actually out of date. What does ``has advised`` mean??? 1) Direct reply to inquiry? 2) E-mail distribution of sked to list? 3) Found on website #1? 4) Found on website #2? [both of which are notoriously and/or admittedly outdated] 5) Received undated schedule, perhaps months old, by P-mail? Those who can pick up VOM at 1030 and/or 1200, please check languages; and at 1500 or 2000, please check frequencies (Glenn Hauser, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** NEW ZEALAND. I've been enjoying good reception of Sri Lanka B/C Corp.'s morning wake-up show to Asia on 15425 kHz from 0030 UT s/on. The rather corny, live DJ tries real hard to be funny and plays great 50's & 60's music, sometimes mixed with canned religious programs. This stays audible some evenings as late as 0300 UT. More Beeb bloopers: You were right about Write On. I`m beginning to wonder if anyone heard it last weekend. There are ten airings of it throughout the world, and ours in the US is the second [UT Sat 0330]. When ours came up missing, I made a hurried schedule of the remaining eight, showing times and the designated frequencies as given in the On Air magazine. Before they put the American and European streams together, there were three times each week when I could hear it: to Europe, to Africa and to the Americas. I was sure I`d catch it somewhere during the weekend. Instead, every time I found a frequency I could receive, there was some other program airing. And if that don`t fry your nuts, check page 42 [April issue], programs for East Asia and the Pacific. The local time they`ve chosen is GMT plus 8 hours. Thus, if you know the local time, you would *subtract* 8 hours to get GMT. However, in *their* GMT column, they *added* 8 hours each time. And even then they were unable to be consistent. Between 1800 and 2100 local time they added 9 hours. But who knows? Maybe the folks in Australia only have daylight time in the evening! (Pete Bentley, NY, April 13, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** U K. Crossband from Portishead Radio Last week we brought you information of the Special Cross-Band Event from Portishead Radio [reprinted in DXLD 00-52]. It is opportune that the date of this event is Saturday the 29th of April - International Marconi Day. BT Maritime Radio Services has allowed this day to be a celebration of 100 years of maritime radio, and to mark the end of the terrestrial service. For historic as well as commercial reasons, the event will be CW-only. A special QSL card will be available to all amateurs and SWLs. Send your report to GKB, PO Box 50, Helston TR12 7YQ. Outgoing cards will be sent via the RSGB bureau unless a stamped, addressed envelope is enclosed. Please note that QSL cards will not be printed until the numbers required are known, and that incoming cards are not wanted. (Radio Society of Great Britain GB2RS News, posted April 19, via John Norfolk, OKCOK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** U K. Some months ago we [the Radio Society of Great Britain] gave details of some projected new broadcasting stations which might come on the air to serve the United Kingdom. One was not so much new, but a planned re-birth of the Radio Luxembourg English service on 1440 kHz. Radio Luxembourg is a commercial organisation run by CLT-UFA, based in the Duchy itself. Most of their services go out in German and French, but they also carry a half-hour Italian programme at 2000 UTC. This is produced by RAI - the Italian national broadcaster. A return of their English service during the evenings has been suggested. However, a spokesman for the independent company in London who put forward this idea has told us that there are still no new developments to report. There have been setbacks, too, involving the long-wave station planned for 279 kHz on the Isle of Man. It was awarded a broadcasting licence, by the Isle of Man Court of Government, exactly a year ago and its frequency now appears in the official listings. Unfortunately, planning permission for the transmitter site and the unusual crossed-field antenna system is still subject to a special enquiry involving the objections of local residents. News about the Dutch 'Delta' project for broadcasting in English to the UK on 171 kHz is also confused. Apparently, two tall masts in the West Schelde river estuary are planned, with an extensive radial system close to the sea surface. However, the French Government has lodged technical objections through the ITU, which now have to be resolved. (Radio Society of Great Britain GB2RS News, posted April 19, via John Norfolk, OKCOK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** U S A. Hi, Glenn, A reminder... Larry Glick will be the guest on ``The Steve LeVeille Broadcast`` on WBZ Boston on Friday April 28 at 0400 UTC. Thanks. (-Steve LeVeille, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** U S A. In case you were planning to catch the special appearance of Larry Glick on Steve Leveille`s show via webcast from WBZ, 1030, Boston, early April 28, forget it. WBZ is now CBS owned-and-operated, and CBS stations are forbidden to webcast. We are reminded of that in a Financial Post story via the National Post via April CIDX Messenger via Bob Ellis, ``CBS Radio to keep content off Web``. Co-chief- operating officer of CBS Radio Inc., David Pearlman apparently believes to put CBS on the web would somehow threaten local radio. While that might be true for national programs like CBS News on the Hour, it is hard to see how preventing a local show on WBZ from being heard beyond the 1030 coverage area could do anything but HELP Boston local radio by expanding its reach. Consider yourself fortunate if you are close enough to hear WBZ on 1030 during the Glick special. KRLD, 1080 in Dallas, now finds itself in the same situation, owned by CBS. During the recent Fort Worth tornado, we wanted to hear live local coverage, but reception of 1080 was difficult due to the high storm noise level. It was even worse on 820, but ABC`s WBAP DOES webcast, so we brought up their coverage instead. Tough luck, KRLD and CBS! (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** U S A. Previous Fridays lately I have not heard any L&FS in the slot previously occupied, 2035/2100 UT, repeated 2-hourly. But April 21 it was back at that time. Presumably the segment will soon be up on the ATC website for ondemand listening (Glenn Hauser, DX LISTENING DIGEST) * U S A. To: WETA, Washington. I thought I heard on-air mention last Saturday that this Saturday 22nd there would be a Living On Earth - Earth Day special at 2-4 pm [EDT] instead of regular programming. Yet I can find nothing about this on the LOE website nor on yours -- indeed, I don't even see the regular LOE on your schedule. Please confirm and explain if there will be such a special. Thanks, Glenn Hauser, World of Radio. Reply from WETA: Dear Mr. Hauser, Although we do not regularly broadcast the Living on Earth program, WETA will be airing the Living on Earth - Earth Day special this Saturday beginning at 2. Information is in the monthly WETA magazine, and will be on our website tomorrow. We hope you can tune in. Thanks for listening. WMIB tests again: From Phil Beckman, WMIB CE (wmib@email.com): Attention radio DX'ers/radio nuts! Mark your calendar for May 7, 2000 between 0000 & 0400 EDT for another in the ongoing series of 'test' programs on WMIB 1660 kHz at our daytime power of 10 kW. Lots of obscure oldies, occasional jingles and some silliness thrown in! Hope you'll be there! Phil (via Lynn Hollerman, IRCA, DX LISTENING DIGEST) That’s Marco Island, Florida. BTW, I hastily misconverted EDT to UT on WOR 1033; should be 0400-0800 (gh, DXLD) ** U S A. All day I have been hearing continuous reggae music on 25950, even faintly till 02 utc. Is this one of the Oregon or Washington FM feeders? If so, which one? At mid-day, the signal was armchair quality, but now fading out here in the Northeast, well into local evening (Donna Ring, NJ, April 20, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Normally heard on 25950 is the Portland OR cue station, usually carrying sports talk KFXX 910, but the same company owns several other stations which may be put on this transmitter. But no IDs heard for hours? (gh) Hello, Again, 25950 turns out to be the auxiliary station for KGON, Portland, Oregon. It came back up today, Friday, April 21, at 14 UTC, faded out between 1430 and 15, then faded back in at 15, continuing with straight reggae music and no talk, punctuated by deep fades till around local noon here, 16 UTC, when first heard ID. Continuing strong from then on with same music only format, next ID at 1820 UTC (Donna Ring, NJ, April 21, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO is on WLIO-TV, ch 35, Lima, OH Sat noon, Sun 1:30 and 6:30 am EST/EDT from WRN on Secondary Audio Program (SAP) (gh) And this service even QSLs. Anyone know who the C.E. is? It would be interesting to see what would happen if the SAP was retransmitted on the 26.410 MHz link that uses 40 watts at 200 feet. (Fred Vobbe, WLIO-TV CE, NRC-AM via DXLD) Is that a promise?
