In 1982, Lopez was an aide to Ron Coleman in his successful campaign to enter the U.S. Congress. Lopez continued to write short stories throughout the 1980's while working as a lawyer. He was elected to a judgeship and continued serving as a judge for 16 years. He retired from the legal profession in 2003 to devote full time to writing. He is married to the former Tina Marie Curry.

Lopez has studied religion all his life. Since his freshman year he has been determined to write about philosophy and religion. He believes the human race has been woefully misled in these two areas. He is now finishing a trilogy which presents a modern, analytical metaphysical system.
