Our Meeting With 3 Deep!
We got to meet 3 Deep when they came to beautiful British Columbia at the end of February 1999. First, 3 Deep had an appearance and autograph session at one of the HMVs one Saturday afternoon, but unfortunately Denise and I couldn't make it because I had to work. However, they were playing at some club later that evening so we planned to go to that.
I got off work early and I went home to get ready. I gave Denise a call and told her that I'd be picking her up in about half an hour. It was a bit of a drive to the club because it wasn't in our city, but in some suburb about half an hour away. We got lost twice: once trying to get on some bridge, but we found eventually found our way, and another time we missed some vague exit off the bridge. We finally got there after about forty-five minutes.
I parked the car while Denise hopped out to get us our tickets. It turned out that we had to buy them at the door when we went in. Since it was still early and we hadn't eaten yet, I suggested that we go into the adjacent restaurant for dinner (I also had a feeling that 3Deep would be in there eating). Well, we went in and headed straight for the back where we thought they would be. Guess what...that's where they were! We stood right next to their table. It was kinda hard not to want to look or stare at them. The hostess asked if she could help us and we said that we'd like a table. She suggested one of two tables and of course we asked for the one right behind them. She then went to see if either table were reserved. We stood there waiting so I told Denise to park her butt at the table behind them. Some waiter came over and asked if he could help us and we said that we were waiting for a table. He said that we could have the one we were sitting at. So, we got to sit behind 3 Deep's table! There was CJ, Josh, Eddie, their manager (we think), and two bodyguards at their table.
We ordered our food and occasionally looked over at their table. Three girls walked into the restaurant and approached their table, however, the bodyguards knew that they wanted pictures with them and he stopped them and sent them out. Of course we were very well behaved! We didn't want to interrupt them while they were eating, but we made sure that we would catch them for pictures before they left. I overheard that CJ and one of the bodyguards were not feeling well...something about sending up Gravol to their room if they needed it. Anyways, CJ got up to leave with one of the bodyguards and Denise jumped up and approached him (it took me a while longer because I wasn't sure whether or not to take all my stuff with me). We asked for pictures with him and he politely agreed. We then thanked him and said bye. By the way, by this time three or four girls, who looked like they were no strangers to trying to meet guys (if you know what I mean), had managed to seat themselves with the boys. We went back to our table and we sat around thinking of what to do next. We got tired of sitting around and we wanted to get into the club before it got too busy so Denise finally got up and headed for their table. She introduced herself and then asked Joshua and Eddie for pictures. They were very nice about it. Eddie thought we were only taking one picture so he was just about to sit back down until Joshua called him a "Jiveass" and told him there was another picture to take (we only took two). After this we left the restaurant.
We got into the club and there was still an hour and a half till they came out. I knew that we had to get to the front of the stage before it filled up so we had to dance for the next hour and a half! It was the longest hour and a half! On top of that, there were four hefty girls behind me who kept pushing and Denise had some girl with a vicious elbow next to her. They finally came out at 11:30 p.m. They sang "Never Gonna Give Up", "Into You", and "Never Quit Lovin'". They were dressed quite casually. They interacted with the crowd a lot. Joshua asked for a beer and someone passed one up, Eddie got some girl's bra and a card from someone else. They looked over at Denise and me every now and then, it looked like they recognized us from dinner! During "Into You" Joshua came over and knelt down right in front of me so I thought he was gonna sing to me, but he put the mic in my face and let me sing along with the other guys!!! I couldn't believe it!
After the three songs, they were selling black and white pics for $10 (for charity) and you could get them autographed. We thought it was a rip off so we just sat around. Then they lowered the price to $5 so we each got one and I got one for a friend who couldn't make it to the show. I got to talk to Joshua for a little bit and when I was in mid-sentence, the bodyguard ushered me away! We left the club because it was pointless after that. There was no way of getting closer to them again.
We left and walked down the street to buy a little bottle of Tylenol or Peptol-Bismol for CJ. We thought it might help since he still wasn't feeling well (Denise asked him how he was when we were getting the pics signed). We walked back to the club and waited outside. We were afraid we had missed them so I went back in and they were still there. I left when I saw them motioning for the doors and Joshua was heading out. Unfortunately we missed Josh leaving. We waited outside while the club was closing and Denise saw Eddie leaving with some girl in a red tube top, a short black skirt, and high black boots. We thought that for sure we had missed all of them but I still went to the back of the club while Denise stayed in the front and I called her on her cell phone so we could communicate. Well, good thing we waited because she caught CJ coming out! She told me to get over there and I sprinted around the club. She asked CJ if he could wait a second because we something for him but that she didn't have it and I did and I was just coming. He said, "Of course, I'll just be right here," pointing to the ground with both hands (cute, eh?) I came around and handed him the bottle of Pepto and he looked in it and said "how sweet" and "thanks". He looked like he was moving to give us a hug but we asked anyways so we both got hugs. We chatted with him for a little bit and we thanked him for the show and said good night. We headed back towards the car and it was time to go home. That was it! Our meeting with 3 Deep!
By the way, in the bag with the Pepto-Bismol, we wrote a note letting them know that we had a website up on their group so hopefully they'll stop by some time soon!
