Part I: 3Deep at the PNE
3Deep was going to perform at the Pacific National Exhibition (PNE) on Saturday, August 21, 1999, at 4:15 p.m. so I went with my sister (Denise couldn't make it since she had an exam that day). We got there at about 2:30 p.m. and there were already about 100 girls sitting in front of the stage waiting. Since it didn't look like it was going to be busy, and I didn't care for having a spot super-close to the front, we walked around for a little bit.
We went back at 4:00 and more people had showed up. At about 4:15, Kayle came out and performed. She sang 3 songs (well, I'm not sure she "sang", if you know what I mean). She had two dancers with her. Then, without delay, 3Deep came out. They started off with "Never Gonna Give Up". Joshua was wearing a gray sleeveless Venice Beach shirt and cargo jean shorts, CJ was in a white Nike dry fit shirt, and Eddie was in an orange Abercrombie & Fitch t-shirt.
They sang a total of 5 songs including: "Get Down On It", "Never Quit Lovin'", "Rain", and they ended the show with "Into You". They also had two dancers for two of their songs. In the middle of the show, they asked for five volunteers to go on stage. Two little girls, a teenager, an older teenager (20-something), and a mom were picked. They guys were holding a dance off! So one of the little girls went first and CJ danced with her - it was really cute! The other selected dancers had their turn. When it was the last little girl's turn (she was picked out by Joshua, and referred to as Joshua's first round draft pick), Joshua danced with her. So, of course, they couldn't decide on a winner and they had to go to a dance off. Everyone was dancing and at the end Joshua's draft pick won. After the show, they signed autographs for everyone.
They guys were really nice and Chris and Joshua interacted with the fans a lot during the show. Stuffed animals were thrown on stage and Joshua would play with them. I didn't get their autographs again, but I did manage to ask one of their bodyguards about the next performance later that evening. Read all about it in Part 2!
Part 2: 3Deep at Tommy's Bar & Grill
One of their bodyguards confirmed that 3Deep would be playing at Tommy's Bar & Grill so I called up Denise and let her know. Denise, another friend, and I decided to go. The show was at 10 p.m., but Tommy's is out in Maple Ridge and that's an hour and a half away from Vancouver. I went home to change and picked up my friends.
We got there at about 9:30 p.m. and paid our $15 to get into the club. They were way late and didn't get there till 11:00 or 11:30. The stage was this wooden platform about half a foot off the ground. People could surround the stage on all 4 sides since the stage was in the middle of the dance floor. The crowd there wasn't great. There were a couple of stagettes going on at the club. The girls were quite pushy and rude. The (older) women weren't very nice (you had to be over the age of 19 to get into the club).
Anyway, the guys came out and sang the same 5 songs. After "Never Gonna Give Up", they asked the two brides-to-be on stage and congratulated them. They continued on with the show and Joshua and Eddie were goofing around playing with someone's funny-eye glasses (pictures available on the pictures page). They had the dance-off again. This time they selected 3 women and all 3 were really excited to be picked out. (Joshua had been eyeing his pick early on - she was all in white and super skinny (her pants had to be safety pinned at the waist) but she wasn't pretty, in my opinion.) So they did the same routine, had a dance off to break the three-way tie. You could see Joshua was enjoying the show - he signaled for the DJ to keep the music going! By the way, Joshua's girl in white won the contest. For "Into You"'s talking part by Eddie, he missed his cue and was late...
After the show, they signed autographs again. Denise and I didn't line up for the autographs, but we did talk to Jeff Mullen and CJ when they were done. Jeff and CJ remembered Denise from the time 3Deep was in town taping their t.v. special! We let Chris know that we had pics of him from high school and hopefully he has or will stop by and visit this page!
Between the two shows, I liked the afternoon PNE show better. Maybe it was because I didn't like Joshua and Eddie's behaviour at the club show or maybe I just didn't really like the whole atmosphere of Tommy's. 3Deep seemed like they were "performers" at the PNE show and the club performance seemed more like a game to them. Either way, I hope they come back to Vancouver soon!
