That's When I Think Of You

PART I

It was a warm night in late August and the group known as Hanson was down in Hawaii for a charity concert.
It was around nine o’clock and they were just finishing up their last song ‘With You In Your Dreams.’
The song brought up some painful memories for the trio of boys. They had just sang it about three months ago at their friend Madeline Sabec’s funeral.
They had all learned some valuable lessons from Madeline’s untimely death.
When they finished, they said goodnight to the crowd and then made a dash for the protection that the backstage offered.
“Man,” Taylor said as he wiped the sweat off the back of his neck, “that was intense. I can’t remember the last time the crowd was so into the music.”
“I know,” Isaac replied as he reached for one of the bottles of water, “I’m kinda glad we’re going home tomorrow. The fans are great but I just want to sleep in my own bed for a couple of weeks.”
“Why?” Zac asked as he looked back out through the door at the crowd. “I love concerts! Everybody we meet is so awesome!”
Before Zac had time to say anything else, the side door swung open.
“Hi!”
The three brothers turned around at the sound of the familiar voice.
“Amy!” Taylor cried out in surprise. “I didn’t know you were here in Hawaii.”
“Yeah well, I came out here for two weeks to visit my cousins. Your parents know but I really wanted it to be a surprise.”
“It sure surprised us.” Isaac said as he noticed someone else walk in, “Is that your cousin?” he asked motioning to the tall, slender teen that had just came in.
“Yeah,” Amy answered as her cousin walked up next to her, “Kelea, this is Isaac, Taylor, and Zac. Guys, meet my cousin Kelea Orion.”
“Pleased to make your acquaintance.” Zac said as he tried to give the image of being serious, “But, what does Kelea mean?”
“Well,” Kelea answered as if she heard that question all the time, “Kelea was a legendary Hawaiian princess who supposedly made friends with the water god. I don’t believe that though. The only I have in common with her is that we’re both good surfers. Amy’s told me a lot about you.”
“Did she mention that Isaac’s still single?” Zac asked as he tired of being serious.
Everybody just laughed as Isaac turned a bright shade of red.
“Zac!” was all that Isaac managed to say before Amy cut him off.
“Come on, Isaac, Zac’s just goofing off like normal. And besides, I already told Kelea all about you guys. She knows everything,” Amy teased, “Even about Robin, Taylor’s new girlfriend,” she added in a hurt tone.
Nobody except Isaac seemed to notice the way Amy had said that last part but he didn’t say anything.
Soon afterward, Diane and Walker Hanson came to take them back to the Orion’s house. They had been staying in a hotel for the last week.
Isaac, Taylor, and Zac soon found out that Amy and Kelea would be flying back to Tulsa on the same plane as them.
PART II

Zac seemed especially hyper the next morning as they all got aboard the plane that would take them home to Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Zac and Taylor sat in one row with their sisters Jessie and Avie, while Isaac, Amy, and Kelea sat in the row in front of them.
On the flight home Isaac talked with Kelea about her family.
He found out that she came from a divorced family, her mom was Mrs. Sabec’s sister, and she was an only child. She was a sophomore in high school but she didn’t really have a lot of friends. She was basically a loner. The only people she was close to were her parents and Amy.
Isaac felt saddened by the last thing he heard but he couldn’t quite figure out why.
His talk with Kelea ended suddenly when Zac started to tap him on top of his head.
“Isaac,” he whispered loudly, “can I trade places with you? I want to talk to Amy and Kelea for awhile.”
Isaac reluctantly traded places with his younger brother.
“Watch it, Ike!” Taylor shouted as Isaac almost sat on a binder full of paper.
“Sorry, Tay. What’s in the notebook?” Isaac asked as he picked up the binder and sat down.
“Just stuff. You know, lyrics, pictures, letters, all the usual things.” Taylor replied as he took the notebook from Isaac.
For the next two hours all Isaac could hear was Zac playing twenty questions with Amy and Kelea.
Kelea. For some strange reason, he couldn’t get Kelea out of his head. He had just met her and yet he felt as if he’d known her forever. He struggled to find an answer as he leaned his seat back so he could sleep for the remainder of the flight.
“Do you think he’s dead?”
Isaac heard voices floating towards him from somewhere above his head.
“Don’t be silly, he’s just sleeping.” he heard a second voice answer the first.
“Well, we really should wake him up.”
Finally, he recognized the third voice as Taylor’s.
“How?”
Isaac paused for a moment before he realized that Kelea was talking.
“Give him a kiss!” Zac shouted.
“What?” He heard Kelea ask in shock.
“Like this!”
After that all Isaac heard was silence. As he opened his eyes he saw Zac leaning over him ready to give him a kiss.
“Zac!” he screamed as he jumped out of his seat, “don’t do that!”
Isaac was fully aware that his face was turning red and he turned his back to try to hide from everyone’s laughter.
After a few minutes of silence he felt someone put a hand on his shoulder.
Come on, Isaac,” he heard Kelea’s Hawaiian accent, “it’s safe to leave now. Zac’s already off the plane signing autographs with Taylor.”
“Thanks. I guess I better get out there too before the girls mob the plane or something.”
Kelea just laughed.
“Musical notes,” Isaac thought to himself, “her voice reminds me of music.”
PART III

The next couple of days went by too fast for Isaac; he didn’t want Kelea’s two weeks to be over with so soon.
The Friday after they got home Zac insisted on going to play laser tag. Eventually, Zac managed to convince Isaac, Taylor, Amy, and Kelea to go with him.
When they got there, the last group of kids had just finished playing and were leaving the maze where laser tag took place.
“All right, we have the whole place to ourselves!” Zac shouted as he started to put on his equipment.
“You are so hyper Zac,” Kelea said as she picked up her laser gun and pointed it at one of the practice targets, “where do you get all that energy from?”
“I don’t know.” Zac answered as he watched as Kelea took a few practice shots.
After they all got their gear on they split into different teams. Isaac went of by himself since he was the oldest, Taylor had Kelea on his team, and Zac paired up with Amy.
After an hour or so of past paced shooting Zac had highest individual score but Taylor and Kelea had the highest score overall.
A couple minutes later everyone started to play with more patience’s, carefully thinking through each move, trying to conserve their ammo.
Isaac stopped at the corner of a wall as he checked on his ammo.
“Just enough to pay Zac back for all those points he’s racking up before I have to recharge.” Isaac thought to himself.
After he rested for another minute Isaac turned and ran through the door ready for anything.
Anything except for what he got himself into that is.
Isaac got about four feet away from the door before he ran right into Kelea as she came around another corner.
“Whoa!” Kelea cried as she fell backwards into the wall.
“Oh my gosh,” Isaac said as he got back up from where he fell to go help Kelea, “Are you alright?”
“Yeah.” Kelea groaned as she reached up to take Isaac’s outstretched hand.
When Isaac took hold of Kelea’s hand he felt shivers go down his back.
As he helped her up he looked down at her and suddenly they found themselves looking straight into each others eyes.
Without even realizing it Kelea stood up and started to pull Isaac towards her.
Isaac was taken slightly by surprise but he leaned down without any resistance.
They were just moments away from kissing when suddenly they heard Zac’s high pitched laughter.
They both jerked their heads up but before either of them had time to respond Zac shot both of them with his laser.
“Got ya!” Zac shouted with joy, “I win!”
Isaac and Kelea just sorta stood there trying to figure out what had just happened.
“Ummm....yeah. You won Zac. Good job.” Kelea finally managed to say.
“Hey,” Zac said in a questioning tone, “what were you two doing just standing there anyway?”
Neither of them knew quite how to answer Zac’s question.
PART IX

The next week soon disappeared into a giant whirlwind of fun and chaos.
The five of them went on all sort of strange and unique activities.
Taylor planned a whole day of just goofing off, they went everywhere from their own backyard to the circus that came into town.
Amy insisted on going shopping for souvenirs that Kelea could take back home to Hawaii with her.
Zac picked to spend the whole day rollerblading through town. With a few stops at the candy stores along the way.
Isaac chose to just have a simple picnic down by the lake.
And they also went on any other activity they could come up with. And everything they couldn’t come up with.
With the exception of a few performances they basically spent all 1,440 minutes of each day hanging out.
The day before Kelea was to go home Isaac woke up with the song ‘Thinking Of You’ going through his head.

‘Have you ever stood outside a picket fence you could see through but you can’t get to the inside you sit there and wait I look at you and anticipate what we could be and what we could do
fly the wings of an eagle glide along with the wind no matter how high I’ll be thinking of you the whole time’

Isaac jumped out of bed. “Kelea!” Isaac thought to himself, “she’s leaving tomorrow!”
He got out of bed and hurriedly got dressed.
As he grabbed a bite to eat Isaac thought back on the two short weeks he had shared with Kelea and realized something special had happened.
In the time he spent with Kelea he had fallen in love with her.
He only wished he knew if she felt the same way.
Isaac knew that if he was ever going to tell Kelea how he felt he only had one more day, he also knew he’d have to take the chance of being rejected.
Suddenly Isaac was snapped out of his thoughts by the sound of Taylor’s voice.
“Ike, why are you up so early?”
When Isaac didn’t answer Taylor walked over to the table and sat down across from Isaac.
“Isaac?” Taylor asked in a concerned voice, “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing. It’s just Kelea.”
“Kelea? What did she do?”
“She didn’t do anything to me.” Isaac said with a sigh, “It’s just that over the past two weeks I......”
Isaac paused for a moment to think, “Ok, what I’m about to tell you is not to leave this room.”
“No problem Ike, now what’s going on?” Taylor said as he got up from the table to find something to eat.
“Well see, it’s like this. Before Kelea came to visit my life has been pretty normal. Now that Kelea’s here everything has changed, I can’t stop thinking about her. At first I just thought of her as a friend, but I think my feelings for her go deeper than that. In other words, I think I’m in love with Kelea. I just wish I knew how she feels.” Isaac finished with another sigh.
“Wow, I know how you feel, I felt the same way about Robin. What are you going to do?” Taylor asked as he sat back down.
“I don’t know. She’s leaving tomorrow so I won’t really get a chance to see her because of that performance we have at the mall later today.” Isaac answered as he picked up another muffin.
“That’s it!” Taylor shouted as he jumped back up from the table, “Hold that thought!” he added as he ran back into their room.
A few minutes later he dragged a half-asleep, half-awake, completely confuse Zac into the kitchen.
They spent a few minutes waking Zac up and then they spent about thirty minutes going over Taylor’s plan.
After the rest of the family got up, Isaac, Taylor, and Zac got ready to go to their concert.
About ten minutes before they were about to leave the doorbell rang.
When Zac answered it he found Amy and Kelea standing on the other side along with Lucy Cole, his closest friend.
“Hi!” Lucy finally said after a moment of silence.
“Hi,” Zac said as he opened the door, “come on in.”
Taylor and Isaac looked on in shock as they tried to figure out why the three girls were there.
They soon found out that their parents had invited them to come along as a farewell present to Kelea.
PART X

Soon after they got to the mall they found themselves surrounded by girls who had come to see them perform.
After a few minutes of signing autographs they finally managed to make their way to where they were performing. < About twenty minutes later they finished getting set up and they started the performance.
They sang MMMBop, Look At You, Where’s The Love, and Speechless.
Those were all the songs that they had planned on singing but unknown to anyone beside them, they had added another song to the list.
“All right everybody,” Taylor shouted into the microphone, “We have one more song planned before we finish up!”
As the crowd of girls screamed, Isaac played the opening notes of ‘A Minute Without You’.
After Isaac played the opening part he started singing.

‘Well I woke up this morning and the nigh had been so long seems that I had had my mind on you well the day, it has begun, and I can’t get a minute, can’t get a minute without you you’re always on my mind, you’re always in my head and I can’t live, I can’t live another day without you.’

When they finished playing Taylor, Isaac, and Zac said goodbye to the crowd and then they spent a few more minutes signing autographs before they exited into the back room.
It wasn’t very long before Amy, Kelea, and Lucy joined them.
After a while Zac and Lucy decided to get a soda so Taylor and Amy wnet with them.
Isaac and Kelea jsut made small talk while Isaac rehearsed in his head what he wanted to say. Finally he made the desicion to actually tell Kelea how he felt.
Meanwhile Kelea had been talking but he was ignoring her. Or so she thought.
“Isaac!”
“What? Oh sorry, what were you saying?” Isaac said snapping out of his trance.
“I was saying how good you guys did. Especially on the last song.” Kelea said.
“Umm.....thanks.” Isaac paused to gather his courage. “Look Kelea, I......this might sound weird......please don’t think I’m crazy but that last song wasn’t on the schedule, Taylor suggested that I added it on there for you. See, before you came to Amy visit, my life was pretty normal, but ever since you came I can’t stop thinking of you. I know this might sound kinda sudden but I didn’t realize how I felt until this morning. What I’m trying to say, what I want to say is, is that.......I love you.”
Isaac stopped talking and lowered his head as he waited for Kelea’s response.
When she didn’t say anything he started talking again. “Never mind, forget it. I don’t know why I just..”
Kelea cut him off, “Isaac, I feel the same way.”
Isaac looked up in surprise, “You do?”
“Yes, Ever since the trip here I haven’t been able to stop thinking of you, “Kelea reached over and took Isaac’s hand in her own, “Every time you had to leave I felt so alone, time seemed to almost stop, it was like the song says, ‘when the minutes seem like hours’. I talked to Amy about it.....I guess she talked to Taylor. I’ve wanted to tell you for how I felt for so long but I was afraid you’d just laugh at me.”
“No....I’d never laugh at you.” Isaac pulled Kelea closer to himself, “You are the most beautiful girl in the world.”
Before Kelea had time to answer, Isaac leaned down and gave her a long, deep kiss.
When Isaac finally pulled away Kelea couldn’t say anything, she just wrapped her arms around him and gave him a hug.
“I think we’d better go,” Isaac finally said, “Don’t want anyone getting suspicious.
When Isaac and Kelea stepped out of the room they found that everyone else was ready to go. Isaac spotted Taylor on the other side of the room and flashed him a ‘thanks’ smile.
The drive back to their house was very active with everyone teasing Isaac and Kelea.
The next day they took Kelea to the airport.
Jessie, Averie, and Mackie gave her a card that they had drawn. Isaac, Taylor, and Zac gave her a bunch of autographed stuff. Amy gave her a ton of stuff for her mom.
They all said goodbye to Kelea and then Isaac walked her on board the plane.
“I guess this is goodbye.” Kelea said in a sad tone.
“I guess so, come back and visit some time.” Isaac said as he gave her a quick kiss.
“I will. Here, this is for you.” Kelea pressed a envelope into Isaac’s hand.
“And this is for you.” Isaac pulled out a gold locket containing a picture of them together, and put it around Kelea’s neck.
After a few more minutes and another quick kiss, Isaac walked back off the plane.
As the Hanson family pulled out of the parking lot Isaac saw Kelea’s plane take off.
“Goodbye Kelea.” Isaac whispered under his breath, “see you soon.”
When Isaac got home he went into their tree house and opened the letter from Kelea. It was written on bluish-green stationary.
Dearest Isaac, Thank you for the wonderful time, I feel that for the first time in my life I’m not afraid to open up to new people. I know I owe that all to you, you and your family showed me a whole new side of life. You’ve all taught me some great lessons in life, like, don’t challenge Zac to a game of laser tag, never trust your own brother to keep a secret (just kiddin’ Tay), and a lot of other important stuff. My friends back in Hawaii will be so jealous to find out that my new boyfriend is Isaac Hanson.
I decided to try and write a song for you. Amy was singing really strangely. Here it is, it probably won’t be very good so bear with me please. I wrote it last night before I went to bed so parts of it might sounda sorta weird. I just want you to know that I love you and I’ll never forget what happened while I was over there. You really mean alot to me and I hope we never lose that special feeling.
Say hi and/or bye to Taylor, Zac, Jessie, Avery, Mackie, and you parents for me. Tell them I’ll be thinking about them and I send them all plenty of *smiles* from Hawaii.
Hugs and Kisses,
Kelea
‘That’s When I Think Of You’
Sometime when I wake up I don’t wanna face the day I’m so afraid that nothing at all will ever go my way
‘That’s when I think of you the one who’s always there no matter what you say or do you always show you care’
When the day has finally started and I don’t know where to begin the only thing I truly want is just for the day to end
‘That’s when I think of you the one who’s always there whenever you’re around me I feel so happy and free’
You picked me up when I was blue I had thought I was defeated that my time was nearly done you made me see I could make it through
‘That’s when I first thought of you when I realized you were there you showed me how to keep going and you taught me how to care’
Ever since that day we met I learned how not to have fear my life has changed so much and I’m so glad when you’re here
‘That’s why I think of you whether you’re far or near and wait to be held close and just hear the precious words I love you once again whispered in my ear’

That’s my song, I hope you like it. I’ll try to and come visit you guys over Christmas break. I’ve got to go, Amy’s already yelling at me to hurry up. See ya!

Love,
Kelea
