Chapter Three: Book One

I unlatched the back screen door and headed back out to the lawn chair in my backyard. I placed my ice cold glass of lemonade onto the table set right next to the chair and flopped down, ready to tan.
Aunt Mary had gone with a bunch of friends off to play bridge or bingo. It didn't matter much to me; I had the whole house to myself for the day.
The thought of having a huge bash crossed my mind once or twice, but taking the risk of Aunt Mary finding out was too big. So, instead, I planned out my whole day--Sit in the sun. It was a gorgeous day out and I wasn't about to waste it away moping in my room about Taylor.
Taylor. I hadn't thought about him once all morning. Just saying his name made my stomach twist in knots. No, I scolded myself. No guys. Especially Taylor.
I sighed with contentment as I positioned my sunglasses on my eyes, sheltering them from the golden rays beating down on me. The warmth felt great.
As I sucked a sip of my drink through the straw that I had stuck in the cup, I heard the phone ring inside.
I cursed myself for forgetting to bring it along with me. I ran inside and picked up the receiver moments before the answering machine had picked up.
"Libby McAllister," I spoke into the phone.
"Lib, You will NEVER EVER guess what just happened!!" It was Aria. Her voice was screaming into the phone with excitement. I had to pull the receiver away from my ear.
I started outside to the back again. "I guess not. So what happened? You sound like you just won the lottery," I laughed, almost reaching my chair.
Aria giggled. "Well, I ok. I woke up this morning, I ate breakfast, and then I got dressed--"
"Ar--the point to this story? I'm pretty sure that getting up and eating breakfast is NOT something out of the ordinary." Her excitement was getting to me. With every giggle my annoyance level went up.
"Ok ok!" Aria called into the phone, seeming a little annoyed herself. "I called Taylor."
"Yea.. so?" I was standing, taking a sip of lemonade. I should have been sitting down.
"Well, I asked him out!! And he said YES!! Can you believe it??" She was screaming into the phone, making her voice thundering into my head, pounding at my brain. I dropped my glass, which shattered at my feet, cutting them several times. I didn't seem to notice. My whole body had gone numb and my knuckles holding the telephone were gripped so tightly, that they had turned white.
Aria was still talking. "I said: 'Can you BELIEVE it?" She was obviously waiting for me to start shouting with her. But I wasn't about to.
"I gotta go," was all I said. I didn't wait for her to respond, because I clicked the phone off and slammed it onto the table, which collapsed from the pressure.
