The Lay of Ulura

  Hear ye kings
Listen ye mighty men of yore
Of the love of the mother
Of the sorrows of the soulmate

Ulura was her name
A woman of beauty and grace
Great was she among her people
  A trader without peer

She carried the dragons gift
She heard their song in the air
She spoke to them through her soul
They responded to her in kind.

She was a mother doubly blessed,
  Two lovely children had she
A hale boy, Tyran was he
  A lovely daughter, Lyseen

Ulura raised them true
Teaching them the ways of wisdom
Instilling in them a soul of compassion
To see others need before their own

The blessing of their house was great
  Wealth enough for any
Yet a greater blessing was there
A love that could easily be seen

Yet, as is the way of life it seem
Their joy would soon be torn
For evil would reach into their midst
  And tear their hearts apart

For many foes had the dragons
  Magical, mortal alike
They saw in Ulura’s gift
  The answer to their plight

For they wished to purge the Dracoi
To remove them from all life
They wished to destroy them all
And saw in Ulura their chance.

They came to another plotting
  Saying, she can help us
She can lure them to us
Where we can gain our hearts delight

So, they took Ulura’s children
In force of arms at night
Telling her to do their bidding
Or else her blood would lose life.

Fair Ulura was broken
To see her children taken thus
But she would not give up the dragons
  To betray that sacred trust

Her path lay clear before her
Some may say it was not wise
But she would save her children
Even if it cost her life

She snuck into the fortress
  Under cover of the night
She looked from deepest dungeon
  To towers under fair starlight

Soon she despaired her search
Thinking that her children already gone
But then, the wind brought a hint
  Of her children’s plaintive song.

With a heart filled with joy
  She followed that wonderous song
Soon, behind a hidden door
She found what she had sought

Her children she did rescue
  From that dirty hidden jail
Alas however, that is not
The end of our sorrowful tale.

For as they left, a shout came out
  A guard had spotted them
Soon all the troops would arise
  And the rescue would fail

But Ulura took her children
To a small hole in the wall
The way that she had come in
Would serve as a way out as well

Ulura prodded her children
Telling them to run and hide and flee
But she knew time was precious
So she stood before the enemy

While her children ran away
  Ulura stood her ground
Praying in the depths of her spirit
That her hearts blood might get away

The enemy assailed her
With bow and sword and spear
Yet every pain in her body she knew
Was another step her children could run

Brave Ulura fell that day
Her blood lost for her children
But her children did escape
Her enemies dread plan was foiled

For Noble Nertorn had taken flight
  Feeling the soulmates pain
Soon her children had found refuge
  Under Nertorn’s gentle wing

The Dragons fostered the orphans
They raised them in their nest
They taught them the ways of honor
  Though Ulura taught it best.

Tyran became a great Lord
  The master of Ravenspeak
Ruling under the banners of wisdom and power
  From that high lonely peak

Lyseen took her own path
Founding her own people as well
She focused on a mothers love
And lead her people beneath the Eyries beak

So ye king and warriors hear
  Ye squires and nobles true
The greatest power is not the sword
But the love of a mother true.
