The Story of Coffee

Long ago in Arabia there lived a goatherd named Kaldi. Everyday he used to take his herd of goats to the hillside to look for grass.

One hot afternoon the goats wandered over the hillside searching for food. Kaldi squatted under a tree to get shade. After a while Kaldi stood up and was surprised to see his goats kicking and leaping around.

Kaldi looked around to find out why his goats were acting strangely. He noticed goats eating some red berries from a strange tree nearby. Kaldi took some berries and rushed to the temple to tell the wise priest about his dancing goats.

The wise priest and Kaldi opened up a berry. They found two sticky beans inside. They tasted the beans but did not like them. Then they cooked the beans and mashed them up. They poured cold water over them. Nothing happened. They poured boiling water over them. The mixture smelled good and tasted even better.

Kaldi felt refreshed after drinking the black drink. The wise priest also found that he could keep awake all through the evening prayers. Kaldi became famous from this discovery.
