宮崎駿就是<龍貓>的爸爸﹐亦是<風之谷>的創作人。Hayao Miyazaki was born on January 5, 1941 in Akebono-cho (town), Bunkyo-ku (district), Tokyo.

From 1947 to 1955, Hayao's mother was sick in bed with spinal tuberculosis. She spent the first few of these years in the hospital. MY NEIGHBOR TOTORO is, in many ways, an homage to this ordeal.  Between 1956 and 1958, Hayao graduated from Omiya Junior High and went on to Toyotama High, a public senior high school. In his third year, he sees the first-ever Japanese feature-length color anime, HAKUJADEN (Legend of the White Snake) (Directed by Yabushita Taiji for Toei Douga in 1958), and becomes interested in animation. Hayao decides he wants to become a comic artist but--having previously drawn only planes and battleships--finds he can't draw people.

In 1963, Hayao graduated from Gakushuin University with degrees in Political Science and Economics. He lands a job at Toei Douga (Toei Animation) in April. His first assignment is the feature, WATCHDOG BOW WOW. Soon, there was a union dispute, and Hayao led the demonstrating animators! He was born into an affluent family who owned a company which made wingtips for Zero fighters during the war. Miyazaki felt guilty about growing up comfortably under parents who made money from the war, while others suffered from it. This seems to have affected his ambivalent feelings towards war and weapons.
He says that he wants to make films that say "I wish that there were such people/things/a world," rather than "this is the way things are." He makes films for children and young people, and he thinks that it is important for them to see the world positively and have hope.
His movies always have flying scenes because he loves flying and airplanes, especially old airplanes.

"Panda Kopanda" (Panda, Kid Panda) is a 30 minute movie made in 1972.
Miyazaki did the original idea, script, layouts, and key animation, and Takahata directed it. The story is about a little girl, Mimiko, who was left alone while her Grandma was away. But soon, a big, fuzzy, warm Papa Panda (Papanda-San is his name) with a cute, little baby Panda (kopanda in Japanese) came to Mimiko's house. Since the house had a beautiful bamboo forest (Pandas eat bamboo), they decided to live with her. The three became a family and did a lot of things together and lived happily ever after.
This movie is considered a "Totoro" prototype. Miyazaki said it was the first anime he made specifically for children (especially his own), and he made "Totoro" since he wanted to make such a movie again. Papa Panda really looks like Totoro with its round design and its big smile. Mimiko sort of looks like Mei with her pig tails. But she is older than Mei, and like Satsuki, Mimiko is independent and resourceful, and takes good care of Kopanda (Pan-Chan is his name) just as Satsuki takes care of Mei. With its gentle storyline, cute round characters, even a song which sounds like the Totoro song, it is definitely the origin of Totoro.
