Identyfying Autopens and Pre-Prints
Autopens
Autopens are fairly easy to spot. An autopen machine holds the pen at a 90 degree angle, making every stroke the same width. Humans hold the pen at a different angle, creating a difference in the width of the strokes. Autopen signatures are EXACTLY ALIKE, thus you can compare to another "through the mail" signature. Another way is to get a magnifying glass and examine the signature.
Since autopens can't make curves, there will be a series of short, straight lines simulating a curve.
Pre-Prints
Pre-prints are a little more difficult to spot. An easy way to tell is by holding the signed object under a bright light. Pre-printed signatures will appear to be "under the surface" of the gloss like part of the photograph.
Some celebrities will have a personalized inscription added to a pre-printed signature in order to mislead collectors.
