LUCY'S SECOND-HAND STORY

What I have to tell you is a "second-hand" story. But I guarantee it will be one story you will never forget. The year was 1916, my mother was about 10 years old - things were really different then. As it was, an elderly uncle was living with the family and his health was poor. Everyone knew it was almost time for him to meet his maker...so family came from near and far to be together when "it" happened.

Since there were people packed in the house, it was necessary to make a daily trip to the corner market for milk, bread, etc...This day, it was mother's turn. Since there was a lot to carry home (they were walking - remember, it's the "olden" days), my mother, whose name was Mary, chose Aunt Annie to go to the store with her.

As they walked along the sidewalk they noticed a tall lady approaching them. She was very tall, and dressed in black - even the large brimmed hat she was wearing. She was a stranger. This woman was so very odd looking that as she got closer and closer to Mary and Aunt Annie, they could not take their eyes off of her.

As the woman in black walked passed them on the sidewalk, Mary and Aunt Annie both turned their heads to get a look at the back of her.

As they turned their heads, the woman was - GONE. Where could she have gone? Behind a tree? There were no trees. Into a house? The homes were set quite a ways back and she couldn't have had the time to get to a house. Mary and Aunt Annie ran home in record time.

It probably won't surprise you, but when they returned to home, they found out that the elderly uncle had just died.

Was the strange lady in black the grim reaper? No one knows for sure...but there was no other explanation!
