Non Mystical Tarot

Religion says you are guilty,
Psychology says you are innocent,
Discretion says you are responsible.

Religions centre on the belief that the acts you perform are willfull, and that you are therefore guilty and can be punished. This is the historical basis for our modern system of justice. Psychology has come along and shown that our behaviour is shaped by our genes and the society we were brought up in, and thus all acts are pre-determined. Justice is therefore being pushed towards rewarding antisocial behaviour with positive experiences of social behaviour.

Discretion says that future social stability is more important than society's past mistakes, or its present problems. A person should be considered wholly responsible for their behaviour and accepted into a particular society only if their behaviour is suitable for that society. Those who act against a society should simply be excluded from participation in that society, and forced to find or make another society for which they are fitted.

The narrow views of religion and psychology are reflected in my attitude to Tarot reading and some other ancient beliefs. I reject the mythic idea that grants Tarot cards some magical power, and the rational idea that it is a con. It works because it uses clever design and skilled execution to reveal the inner conflicts of the subject to themselves. No magic, no trickery, just the eternal constants of life's convolutions.

On the other hand - my beliefs and philosophy of life are always evolving, and at present I am exploring various areas where previously I might have been an out-and-out sceptic. My mind has been opened by the realisation that rationality is not enough. Now I want to find what else there is to complete my picture of reality.
