Knight In Shining Armour

The Good Samaritan would despise Christian Aid Week.

Charity is about one person responding to another's immediate needs with just enough help to overcome an obstacle which would otherwise defeat them. The philosophy is all in favour of that because it allows the recipient to return to living on their own discretion, and means that the giver may expect similar aid if HE (or she) is in extremis. This is the social contract.

"Charity" on a larger scale, institutionalised giving, denies the giver the discretion to determine need, and denies the recipient the right to evolve at the best pace. I will never give to charity because it subverts the whole idea of the social contract. People are usually shocked when I say this, as I try to be as kind and generous as I can afford to be, whenever someone I know appears to need my help.

Religion and charity are the core of society when they are individual and personal, but they undermine society the moment they become organised and collective.
