Tamahome is the protector of Suzaku no Miko. He is her guardian and gives her power. He is a martial artist with few peers, and his general tenacity and dedication to his role as Seishi is frightening to watch. Tamahome's Suzaku symbol "Oni" is located upon his forehead.

Tamahome is very materialistic. For the first seventeen years of his life he has only had money on his mind. However, whilst he is materialistic he is not greedy. He works to help a lot of people, and whilst he insists that they pay him in return he rarely charges them very much. In the first few episodes he insists that Miaka should pay him to remain as Seishi, but it is clear even in the early episodes that his motivation to protect her goes far beyond the concept of money.

Tamahome is exceedingly altruistic, to the point of stupidity. This is he demonstrates his willingness to die if need be to protect Miaka, as he rarely displays any concern for his own life and well being. This is also demonstrated in his desire to accumulate wealth. He never asks for anything unless he is certain that his customers can afford the price he is asking.

Tamahome is very passionate. His dedication and love for Miaka overwhelmes him, and sometimes even Miaka. Time and again he uses this passion to overcome all the hurdles in their relationship. At first he spurns Miaka, and pushes her away, soon though he comes to know his own heart and resolves to be with her, regardless of the consequences even to the point of defying the Emperor Hotohori.
