Caius Pandius Aurelius
Male Human
Lawful Neutral (Ranger 1 / [ex] Paladin 4)

Background: Growing up on the border cities of Warwickian frontier, Caius Pandius Aurelius spent much of his childhood outdoors.  As he grew into manhood, he was employed by the army of his home as a scout, which for a youth his age he proved well suited for.  He was particularly adept at tracking and fighting the goblinoids that plagued his realm.

What made him then choose the life of the paladin is a mystery.

It is said that a god approched him in a dream and offered him the opportunity to serve him directly.  Whether this is true or not, Caius was soon serving his land as a holy warrior, devoting himself to his god and his ideals and bringing justice to the frontier lands.  He remained in his country's army, earning much fame and prestige, though accepted little of it, remaining modest and humble to a fault.  He accepted enough to live off of, the same amount any member of the army took, and kept himself supplied with weapons, armor, and provisions.  He was the quintessinal knight, believed at once unbeatable and unsweavering from his faith and devotion.

In the year 741, this changed.

Goblinoids poured from the mountains like a plague, attacking nearby settlements.  Most of the people were slaughtered, but some escaped and were able to warn the cities closeby.  Warned thus, preparations were made and a small number of troops, including Caius who served as second in command, were sent to the nearby towns to evacuate as many of them as they could back to the protection of his city.

They traveled light, wearing light armors and riding light warhorses used by the army for scouting and speed.  They arrived at the several villages and evacuated them, escorting them back towards their city.  Along the way, however, they were set upon by a goblin army.  Their numbers small, the group led the group through a systematic retreat, a portion of their group, lead by the groups leader, harrying the goblins as the rest, led by Caius, led them to safety.  They were rejoined  by their full group at some point during the night, and their leader reported that the goblinoids had been safely led away, and suggested they set up camp to give them time to rest.  Caius disagreed, thinking they should move on further to be sure, but his commander was sure  they were safe enough.  To be safe though, he conceded in allowing Caius to find a defensible possition, which he found within a valley

Caius and two others were sent to find wood for fire and food for them to eat.  It was then that the commander found out just how wrong he was.  They were set upon savagely as the sun fell over the western skies.  The refugees retreated into the valley with the soldiers fighting them off as they continued to be pushed back.  Caius and the two hunters with him were set upon as well, by the conclusion, only Caius remained standing.  He raced back to the encampment as swiftly as he could.

One by one the other soldiers feel as the refuges were pushed back.  They reached the end of the valley, knowing that once they passed from the confines of the valley, it would be all over.  They would be quickly surounded by the oncoming horde.  The last of the soldiers fell just as they cleared the valley, and they prepared to be overrun as the first of the goblinoids prepared to clear the valley.

As the goblin cleared the valley, however, a spear pierced his stomach.  Cauis quickly impoosed himself between the opening and the advancing goblinoids, his gladius and shield in hand, setting himself up as a one man phalanx.  He shouted for the rest to run as he alone stood, blocking the path to the advancing goblinoids.  Again and again he pushed them back, but there were far too many for him alone.

An arrow streaked towards his head, which he ducked, but the tip of the arrow sped along the right side of his face, leaving a deep laceration.  Again goblinoids pushed forward, and again he pushed them back as another arrow struck him, this time in his left thigh.  Caius continued to fight on, but two more arrows struck him, one in his shoulder, the other in his stomach.  Just as the goblinoids prepared to push past him, the war horns of his city sounded.  The goblinoids retreated, taking Caius with them.

He would be found days later, naked, nailed to a tree, signs of torture evident upon his body, obviously left for dead.  Caius was let down and brought back to the city, his wounds tended to by the healers and clerics, and allowed to rest within their church.  Other wounds, however, would not be so easily healed, for at some point during his capture, Caius had lost his faith, and therefore the powers of the paladin.

Caius wounds healed slowly, but soon, he was out and about again.  For his efforts and bravery, he was given a reward and a promotion within the army, but this he turned down, instead merely accepting weapons, armor and a horse which he personally selected, and left the city.  He had much soulsearching to do, and this, he felt, could not be accomplished within the confines of the city, and so he set out to find his way within the world.
