A minute later, Alex came home. He was a second grader. He was a little cutie. He had light blond hair that was short with spikes on top. Sky blue eyes. All the girls had crushes on him already.
"Hey Alex."
"Hi Maranda. Hi Cassie."
"What's up Alex?"
"Not much."
"Do you have homework?" I asked him.
"Yeah."
"Like what?"
"Math and reading."
"Do you need help? Mom's at a meeting, so she won't be home for a while."
"Yeah. Where's Rory?"
"At a babysitters' house somewhere close to mom."
"Oh."
"Why?"
"It just seems like she's always at meetings now days."
"I know, but she'll be home soon. It's very important that she goes to these meetings. Besides. Whatever they're taking care of should be almost done."
"I hope so."
"Hey Maranda!"
"What Cass?"
"Here's a note from mom."
"Where?"
"Over here." I went next to the stove and read the note.
"Hey kids. Today's meeting is in Louisville. I left some money for you to get some dinner. It's upstairs in my nightstand drawer. Have Maranda order something. I'll be back hopefully by nine if the weather permits. Be good. See you later. Love, mom. Well, what does she mean 'if weather permits'? Is there some storm coming that I don't know about? Cass, turn on the radio please." I opened the door and looked at the sky. Big, grey clouds are now patching the sky. "Did you know about this Cass?"
"What?"
"That there was going to be serious weather."
"No. Wait! They're saying something about it on the radio."
"Turn it up." She turned up the volume.
"This evening, at approxamately six or seven, a severe storm will be in the area of Louisville and the suburbs three or four hour's drive outside Louisville it's self. Anybody in this area might want to begin getting their basement ready. This storm will be a doosy. I would not suggest any traveling after this time, or there might be some serious accidents. More details to come."
"Oh my god Maranda. Do you have mom's number of where she is now?"
"No, but we'd better order dinner before everything closes. What do we want?"
