Chapter Seventeen
Standing in front of her bathroom mirror, Whitney finished adjusting the clips in her hair. Only the sides were up, and the rest in it's regular large ringlets. Approving that, she moved onto her makeup. Just some mascara, a little eyeliner since it was night, a touch of blush and some cherry lip gloss, and she was done. With her jean jacket on her arm, she tucked her lipgloss in her purse just as the doorbell wrang. Perfect timing. Giving herself a final once over, and a confident smile, she popped in a peppermint lifesaver and made her way slowly to the stairs. At the top, she could hear her dad greeting Isaac. She thought it would be bad for the first date for her dad to start asking him twenty questions, so when he asked Isaac to come in to sit and wait, she started down the stairs. They both turned to her, relief washing over Isaac's face.
"It's okay. I'm ready." My dad nodded.
"Have a good night, and be back before midnight." Dad gave Isaac an intentional warning stare.
"Yes dad. See you later. Love you."
"Love you." He stood in the door until they were both in the car, seat belted, and pulling out of the driveway. Waiving, she turned to Isaac.
"Cool car. Is it yours?"
"Yeah. I bought it the day I got my license." He smiled, then caressed the steering wheel. "So did you want to catch a movie?"
"Well, I was thinking, maybe we could just walk by the river or an outdoor cafe, since movies are so impersonal. I'd like to get to know you. Seems you have some stories to share." And it'll be late after and I'll see you tomorrow night, she thought to herself.
"Stories?" He sounded suprised.
"Yeah. My friend and informant Emily let me in on the not-so-much-a-secret-except-to-me that you and your brothers are well on your way to becoming hugely famous." Isaac looked confused.
"You didn't know?"
"That's what Emily said." Whitney laughed. "I've been so busy between school and teaching, I don't hardly ever have time for the outside world. My friends reminded me of that last weekend."
"Does that change things?"
"No, I just think that we should enjoy ourselves until our scheldules tell us different. Not too serious, you know?"
"Yeah, I guess." Was that disappointment in his voice?
"So where are we going?" She asked excitedly, trying to lighten the mood.
"I know this great little spot right over here." With that, he made a left turn, then another, and one more right into a parking space. Whitney looked at it throught the windshield. Obviously Italian, it was a small restaurant with big glass front windows, a big red and white overhang, lots of two-seat tables and an iron fence around all of them.
"This is perfect." Isaac smiled, then came around for her door. As soon as they stepped through the gate they were seated at a corner table, away from the building. Two seconds later, the server came and asked about drink preferences. She looked at Isaac. With his hair back in a tail, a nice button-down shirt and some jeans, she had to admit he did look good. She leaned towards him, smiling.
"Tell me how it started."
"I should be on that date, not Isaac."
"She'll be over tomorrow night. Kiss up to her and do what she wants. Stick around after, and suggest a casual hang out at the Cold Stone when she gets a chance."
"That's a good idea. Thanks Adam." Taylor propped his feet up on the coffee table and waited for the video game to load. He was spending the night over at Adam's, trying to get a not so obvious insight on Whitney. "And now I'm going to kick your butt."
"Oh. I don't think so." And the game was on.
Finished with dessert, Isaac and Whitney were strolling down a path through a park. The stars were out in a clear sky, and there wasn't anybody but the occasional couple doing the same thing. His arm was around her shoulders. She had already pulled the "cold" trick. The date was going well, and he had caught her up with his band and even what their plans for the near future were. They were ambitious, but it sounded very doable. And that was amazing.
"That's so great that you and your brothers get along well enough to want to be in a bus for that long." Now it was time for her investigation.
"Yeah, well, we definitely have our moments though."
"Zac is eleven, right?"
"And Tay is fourteen." Whitney nodded.
"Do you think that Taylor would be interested in seeing one of my friends? She's a big fan." Isaac laughed quietly, remembering Tay's mood after the visit to the park, but he also wanted Whitney to himself.
Smiling, "He loves meeting fans, or do you mean, like a date?"
"Yeah, or a double." Isaac couldn't help but grin. This was perfect.
"I think I could work something out. I'll get back to you on that." Whitney nodded, happy with his answer. They walked some more, and then right in front of them, was a clearing with a fountain right in the middle. Isaac took her hand and led her to it. They sat down on the ledge. "Want to make a wish?" He smiled and dug out two pennies from his pocket. Taking one, Whitney smiled back.
"You first."
"Okay." He flipped the penny in. "I wished that you had so much fun you'd want to go out with me again, and next time we talk about you." Whitney laughed, and tossed her penny in.
"I wished that you guys get everything you've worked so hard for and deserve." Isaac slid closer and looked into her eyes. She knew what was coming next, and she didn't mind. He was very soft and gentle, and not at all the sloppy and desperate way she was expecting. Pulling back, he held her at arms length.
"We'd better start heading back." He said quietly. Whitney nodded, imagining what it would be like to kiss him again. They began walking back to the car, thinking about what just happened. He put his arm back around her shoulders, and hers went around his waist.
When they got into the car, he smiled.
"Just in case your dad is watching out the window and I don't get to give you a goodnight kiss." This one was hotter, more needy. Letting go, he started the car. Whitney could tell he was trying to keep things innocent, and she was thankful.
"Here. Take a listen." He pushed a button on the radio, and music began to drift through the speakers.
"Well I woke up this morning, and the night had been so long. It seems that I have had my mind on you." She recognized that as Isaac's voice. Then he joined in.
"Well the day, it has begun. And I can't get a minute, can't get a minute without you." A huge smile spread on her face, then his. Launching into the chorus, she was amazed and impressed. When the song was done, he adjusted the volume a little and let the disk play.
"That was amazing! Is that the song on the radio?"
"No." He changed the track and let 'MMMBop' play. Not much later, they got to her house. At her door, she turned to him.
"I have to admit, I haven't had a better date."
Isaac grinned. "Really?"
"Really."
"Then we'll have to do it again soon." He bent in to give her a kiss on her cheek.
"For sure."
"Good night, Whitney. I'll see you tomorrow night. And I promise I'll cooperate." Whitney laughed.
"All right. Thank you so much for a great time Isaac. Good night." She returned the kiss with a brush of her lips over his. Opening the door, she smiled at him over her shoulder before he disappeared behind the door.
