Chapter Twelve
"What about Kristi?"
"What about her? She's an aquantance. Nothing more. Actually- I take that back. She's a non-stop chatter-box." Whitney laughed at the perfect discription of her. "Sadie is distracting her. So I can do this. Will you go out with me?"
"I guess I can make it. How long will you be here? Do you live in the area?"
"I'm leaving tomorrow morning. We can go out tonight. As for where I live, well, it's in the same state, just at the opposite end- a small city in the panhandle. Boise City."
"Oh. That's quite a ways."
"Yeah, but I promise to come visit every and anytime possible."
"Okay."
"And if I could get your phone number, I could call you."
"Fine. I can do a long-distance relationship. I don't have time for a full fledged relationship, but long-distance, you're lucky on that one."
"Okay." Whitney heard screaming and yelling. They both looked to see Sadie chasing after Kristi who was running towards them.
"Brandon! Come see this!" She grabbed his hand and tried pulling him away, to get his attention.
"What Kristi?"
"You have to come see this!"
"I'll be right back Whitney." She nodded.
"Actually," Sadie inturrupted, "We have to go back." She grabbed Brandon's other hand and pulled him in the direction of their house.
"Bye Whitney!" They called.
"Bye guys!" Whitney yelled back.
"Well, I guess I'd better go then too." Jacob said.
"I'll walk you back." Emily offered him.
"Sure. Thanks." They left after Sadie and Brandon. Roger, Adam, Kristi and Whitney were the only ones left. Kristi watched after Sadie and Brandon with longing until they were out of sight. Suddenly a wave of guilt washed over Whitney. She had to cancel with Brandon. She couldn't steal one of her best friends crushes, even if he didn't like her that way. She turned to find Adam and Roger. Roger and Adam were talking to two people over by a basketball court. Kristi and Whitney sat down on a nearby bench. Whitney carefully watched Adam and Roger while Kristi began telling her about all the things she had talked about with Brandon. Whitney saw Roger point to her -or Kristi- and return to talking to the two people. The two strangers each had their long hair pulled back into a pony tale so she couldn't tell if they were boys or girls. Then Adam left them and came toward them.
"Whitney, those two boys with Roger say they know you."
"Oh really."
"Yeah. They want to talk to you."
"Okay. Kristi, I'll be right back." She nodded and remained silent. Waiting until they were out of earshot, "She likes Brandon." She whispered to Adam.
"Why can't she go out with him?"
"He didn't ask her."
"So? Can's she ask him?"
"She could, but the answer's no."
"Why?"
"He asked me first."
"Ohhh. I get it."
"Yeah." They got to the boys. Whitney recognized them in an instant. "Hi guys!" She smiled.
"Hi." They answered.
"I remember you. You're those boys that didn't want to dance. Don't I tutor your sisters and mom? Isn't there another one of you? Zac isn't it?" Taylor smiled.
"Yes. We're the ones that didn't want to dance, yes, you tutor our mom and sisters, and yes, the third one is Zac."
"And you're...Taylor! And you're...you're...ah...Isaac!"
"Yeah." They smiled. Whitney was proud of herelf for remembering.
"Anyway, Isaac saw you and he wanted to ask you something. Go ahead Ike." Adam pursuaded.
