-Chapter 7-
“Wow, it’s beautiful out here.” I said, opening my eyes to the wonderful site of the ocean. Nick’s hand took mine and he helped me out of the car. He looked and the ocean and took a long, hard stare at it.
“Yeah, isn’t it?” He asked, still staring at the ocean. Quickly, he looked at me, but his eyes are soon back to the water. “Its’s so calm and peaceful.” He looks deep in thought.
“Do you come here often?” I asked.
“Yeah, I guess you could say that. Come on the sun’s about to set and it’s gorgeous out when it does.” He pulled my arm, nearly yanking it out of the socket.
“Ow!” I said softly, then laughed. Nick looked at me, curious if I was hurt or not, but I gave him a reassuring smile.
“Sorry.” He walked slowly on the sand. All of a sudden he stopped, took of his socks and shoes and before I could say anything he was standing in the water, calling for me to come. Anxiously, I took of my shoes and went after him. The water came up on my feet and I felt a cold shiver slide up my spine. Nick must have seen.
“Yeah, I guess it’s a little cold. Come on, I’ve got a blanket we can sit on over there.” He said and pointed to a spot on the sand. I looked down the beach. There was no one within about 150 feet of us. It was so empty.
Nick grabbed the blanket and set it out a few feet in front of the car. I sat down while he sat next to me. We watched the sun set, as the pale moon started to show clearly. We listened to the Boyz II Men song, “On Bended Knee,” that was playing on the radio. That song’s kinda old, but this radio station plays old and new music, I guess. I sat quietly, but the silence was soon stopped when Nick said something.
“So, tell me about yourself.” He said. Didn’t we already have this conversation? Oh well.
“Not much to me. Like I said before, I moved from Milwaukee, but before that I lived in Rochester.” I stopped. I don’t know what to tell him!
“Go on.” Nick laughed.
“I don’t know what to tell you!” I laughed back.
“Anything. I’m curious to know anything about you.” Nick said, then blushed, but continued to keep his baby blues looking directly at me. “I mean, I like to learn new things about new people.” I laughed, he was very cute.
I went on to talk about my life in Milwaukee, about my friends and some of the crazy stuff we did. Some how, I failed to mention my boyfriend, Josh. I did love him dearly, but he just slipped my mind when I was with and around Nick. I also told him about my favorite hobby, dancing. You see, I’ve been a dancer since the first grade. I’ve been through everything from tap, to jazz, to even toe in the last four years.
“Wow, I’ve talked a lot.” I commented. The sun was completely set and the pale moon showed across the star-lit sky. “It really is beautiful out here.” He nodded. His silence brought a strange curiousity to my mind, as if he’s hiding something. Although it’s only the first date, I’m bound to find it out.
“Yeah I know.”
“Well okay, you’re turn, tell me about you.”
“There’s nothing much to me.” I laughed.
“Come on tell me.” I begged.
“Well...” Nick talked about his semi-large family that consisted of 3 youger sisters, a younger brother, and an older half sister. I was really suprised, and happy; from the way he talked about them, they meant the world to him and he’d do anything for them. I smiled at his sweetness. He went on to tell me about school, how no one really use to like him or talk to him, until he started playing sports, which he is really good at from the sounds of it.
We talked and talk The sound of the radio became so clear. “Say It,” by Voices of Theory was ending. “That was a new one, ‘Say It’ by Voices of Theory.” The DJ said.
“That’s a nice song.” I commented. Nick nodded.
“Here’s another new one comin’ atcha, from Jon B., called ‘They Don’t Know.” The DJ’s voice came across the radio one more time. My ears jumped as they announced the song.
“Would you do me a favor?” I asked, a hint in my voice.
“Sure.” Nick smiled at me.
“Would you dance with me? I love this song.” I grabbed his hand and started to put him up, off his butt, before he could protest.
“Well I guess.. now that I’m up!” He laughed and put his arms carefully around my waste. The song played and it seemed to last for hours.
“We should go. We’ve been here for a long time and we’ve got school tomorrow.” Nick said, looking down at his forest green pager.
“I guess so.” I looked down at his pager also. I didn’t want this night to end. I know it’s only the first date, but I’ve already got strong feelings for him. Is this wrong?
We drove back to my house, almost in silence, with the radio softly on. I glanced at him a few times out of the side of my eye, hoping he didn’t catch my glances. We got to my house and he offered to walk me to the door.
“I had lots of fun tonight, thank you very much!” I said, graciously.
“Yeah me too. I’m sorry I didn’t show you too much of the town, but if we do this again, I promise there will be more!” Nick smiled.
“Okay, well then we’ll have to do this again.” I said. God, I wish he’d kiss me.
For a minute, our eyes were locked and it seemed as though our lips would touch. But he turned and kissed me on the cheek quickly.
“I’ll see you tomorrow.” He said, walking down the stairs of my porch. A little saddened, yet
filled with happiness, I sighed and opened the door to my house. Some how, I got thsi gut feeling,
I knew I’d wish I hadn’t come home.
