If I Don't Have You Chapter 38

Chapter 38

Sara sat in front of her mirror in her bedroom, and brushed her hair. It was finally the day of Jenni’s big pool party. She smiled, excited to see Brian. Neither of them had talked much since Brian had explained about being a Backstreet Boy two days ago. She was stunned at first, and then wondered why someone famous had ever wanted to go out with her. Her smile faded, thinking about the only time she had left to spend with Brian. The phone rang, interrupting her thoughts.
“Sara?” Jenni’s voice immediately asked, as Sara picked up the phone.
“Hey Jen! Sup?”
“You were suppose to be here.. oh.. an hour ago!” Jenni said, sounding irritated.
“I know, I’m sorry, but with my parents back and stuff they wanted to spend time with me. I’m on my way over in about 10.” Sara relieved Jenni.
“Okay, hurry up, we’ve got some work to do before everyone gets here!” Jenni’s voice was relieved, but in a hurry.
“Okay, okay I’m on my way.” Sara said. She hung up the phone, and grabbed her purse and things and headed downstairs.
“Mom, Dad, I’m headin over to Jenni’s. We’re having a get-together with friends.” Sara hoped to slip away quickly.
“We just got home yesterday and you’re leaving us! Didn’t you miss us?!” Her mother protested.
“No, you know I missed you! It’s just I haven’t seen much of my friend’s since the beginning of summer. It’s gonna be a blast, come on, you gotta let me go! I promised Jenni I was on my way over to help her set up!” Sara pleaded.
“Oh alright. You’ll be home later, then?”
“No, I’ll probably spend the night..... if that’s okay with you??” Sara said, trying to give a pleading, innocent face. Her mother’s face seemed to show a little bit of anger, but she didn’t protest.
“Alright. Call me tomorrow. But when you get home...” She began.
“I know.” Sara said, she already knew she was going to be staying in for a while, her mother didn’t need to finish. “Thanks!” She said, and kissed her parent’s cheeks and hurried out the door before they could change their minds.
“Honey, do you think Sara was okay while we were gone? I mean she seems so different.” Sara’s mom asked her dad.
“I don’t know.. I wonder.” Was all her dad said. Sara’s mom shook her head and went upstairs to her room.
Sara popped into Jenni’s house without knocking. First off, she knew no one else would be home, and secondly, they’d always done that for as long as they could both remember.
“Honey, I’m home!” She yelled, walking through out the halls of the house.
“Hey Sar, back in the yard.” She heard Jenni’s reply from the back yard. She walked through the kitchen, out the patio door.
“Hey w’sup?”
“Duh, let’s see...” Jenni paused and looked up at the sky. “Well, that one looks like a bunny rabbit, and that one looks like A.J.’s hear, and well that one sorta resembles his foot, and...” She referred to the clouds.
“Oh, I wonder who’s head has been day dreaming in the sky all day.” Sara laughed.
“Yeah, my guess is too much sun.” Jenni laughed, then pulled a strap of her tank top and showed an old tan line next to a darker new one.
“Haha, farmer’s tans kick ass!” Sara laughed. “So, what’s the plan?”
“Well, basically to get everything ready before everyone gets here.” Jenni replied, in a sarcastic tone.
“Haha, yes General Bubbles!” Sara saluted her best pal. She use to always call Jenni ‘Bubbles’, because of the way, when they were little, she’d always end up spilling the bottle of bubbles over everytime they were blowing bubbles.
“Shut up! I thought we got rid of that nickname a long time ago.”
“Well think again. I’m making sure that things goes on your wedding invitation. HAHA”
“Oh don’t even start. We got a lot of work to do. Okay, first we get the 2 tables out, and lawn chairs, and table cloths out and then the food. Then the streamers and balloons. Then the big stereo and everything else.”
“I thought this was just a small ‘get together’?” Sara asked, following Jenni into the garage.
“It is.” Jenni laughed. The two girls began to work, like busy bees (LOL).
After moving the 2 tables, taping the tables cloths, and the lawn chairs out of the garage into the hot scorching sun, the girls headed in for a drink. Jenni opened the fridge.
“Let’s see, we got Coke, Sprite, A&W, Mountain Dew, and Fresca.”
“Coke all the way!” Sara said cheerfully. Jenni handed her a Coke, and a Mountain Dew for herself. They both took extremely large gulps, and then had a short burping contest.
“UGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!” Jenni burped then giggled.
“Oh yeah.... UGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH!” Sara let out an even louder one. They started laughing harder and harder as their eyes filled with tears.
“Okay okay,” Jenni hiccuped out through her laughter,” we still gotta do more.” She set down her MD and headed to the garage.
“Oh, could we play with these!?” Sara cried, running to the corner of the garage. She pulled out about 5 plastic floaties, 4 water noodles, and 2 beach balls. “Sheesh, spoiled much!?” She yelled to Jenni, referring to all the water toys. Jenni just stuck out her tongue.
“Sure, through ‘em in the pool. Come on now, I don’t want this to be a total disaster when they all come!”
“Okay okay.” Sara said glumly. The still had a lot of work to do.
After about two and a half hours of setting up and arranging things, they fell into the lawn chairs. A doorbell disturbed them, as soon as they fell.
“What? People aren’t suppose to come for another hour.” Sara said, confused.
Jenni got up and headed through the patio door, Sara quickly followed.
“It’s the V.I.P. guests.” Jenni said with a smile.
