If I Don't Have You Chapter 18

Chapter 18 -- If I Don't Have You

Sara saw Nick over on the b-ball court. He wasn’t facing her, he was shooting hoops. She walked up to him, unsure of what his reaction would be.

“Nick?”

“Oh hey” He said, as he spun around quickly. He flashed a big smile. He seemed so happy! Throwing the ball aside, he walked over and picked up a bouquet of flowers and handed them to Sara. Nick looked behind her, and saw Brian walking his way. His big smile completely flipped upside down.

“Hey, what’s going on?” He asked. Brian walked right up to Sara and Nick. They all stood in a sort of triangle.

“Nick, Brian....” Sara paused. “I’ve thought about this, A LOT!” She walked over and kissed Nick on the cheek quickly. “I’m sorry Nick, but I really like Brian.” She said, trying to give him a hug.

“What?” That was the only thing Nick could mutter out..

“I’m very sorry! I like you too, but....” Sara faded out. She looked deeply into Nick’s eyes. She could see all the pain and sadness form in his eyes. She felt terrible. Nick just stood there, with his jaw dropped, gazing into her direction, but looking past her. It looked like he was trying to say something, but he couldn’t think of it or nothing would come out.

“Nick?” She asked, “Talk to me!”

“What do you want me to say?” Nick snapped. Brian finally stepped into the conversation.

“Nick, come on. Please don’t be like this.” He pleaded with Nick.

“Be like what? HUH? You were suppose to be my best friend!” Nick was yelling. Brian started to feel terrible.

“I know! I am, and you’re my best friend, you always will be! Please just forget about it!” Brian begged Nick. Nick didn’t say anything. Instead, he just turned and ran. He didn’t even grab his basketball.

“I should go talk to him.” Sara said to Brian, wanting to go after him.

“No, let him be. He needs some time to think it over.” Brian said, trying to comfort her. He wrapped his arm around her and gave her a hug. Sara still felt uneasy about the way everything had just ended.

Brian and Sara walked around the park, hand-in-hand. They both tried to forget about what had just happened, for the time being. They walked over to the swings, and sat down on them, next to eachother. Sara swung back and forth slowly while Brian just sat there.

“Hey Sara?”

“Yeah?” She looked over into his ocean blue eyes.

“Are you sure you want to be with me more than Nick?” He said, sounding somewhat doubtful, but trying to sound trusting.

“Of course! Why wouldn’t you think that?” She asked confused.

“I dunno. I saw the way you looked at Nick after you told him, and...” Brian stopped mid-sentence. He looked down into the sand. Sara felt offended by this comment. She got up and walked over, and sat down under a nearby tree, starring in the opposite direction.

Brian felt bad about what he said, and walked over to her, sitting down next to her.

“I’m sorry.”

“Why did you ask me that? It hurt to hear you say that you didn’t think I liked you.”

“I’m sorry! I just thought that if you really liked Nick and you were making the wrong choice, you should go and tell him you like him.”

“Brian! If I really like him, would I be here now? NO! I’m here now ‘cuz I like YOU and,” she paused, “I think I’m falling in love with you.”

Sara turned and looked away. She wasn’t sure of how that came out, but she knew it was true. Could it be? Was she falling in love with Brian? She didn’t know, she’d never been in love, but she’d never felt like this before.. about anyone.

There was a long silence between them. Brian broke it. He took his hand and pulled Sara’s face over, so she was looking at him. She blushed and looked downward.

“I think I’m falling in love with you too!” Brian said quietly, and started blushing. He wrapped his arm around her shoulder and pulled her closer to him. Sara laid her head on his shoulder.

Nick ran to his car, and drove over to Howie’s right away. He felt the tears start to well up deep in his eyes. They streamed down his face. He whipped his eyes quickly before he walked up to the door of Howie’s place. Howie came to the door when Nick rang the buzzer.

“Hey Nick,” He said, seeing that something was wrong, “what’s the matter?”

“Everything!” Nick grumbled.

“Come in.” Howie said, and Nick started to tell him everything.

“Then, she told me to meet her at the park and I did, and she told me that she liked Brian more than me and said all this stuff, and I ran off.”

“Oh wow.” That was the only thing that Howie could think of to say. Nick looked so hurt.

“I don’t know what to do now.”

“Well, do you think she really likes Brian?”

“Well, I dunno.. I remember how she looked at him a few times. I guess so.”

“Well?”

“Well what?”

“What do you think?”

“I don’t know! That’s why I came to see you, since I can’t talk to Brian about this.”

“Well maybe that’s what you should do.”

“Oh no! NO WAY! I’m not talking to him! NEVER!” Nick said out of anger. “I think you should. But, if you don’t want to, I can see why.” Howie said. He looked to see Nick’s reaction. Nick just kept silent, he just stood there, starring through the window. Howie continued, “At least if you won’t talk to Brian, talk to Sara.”

Nick nodded and decided he would go home and call her. He thanked Howie for the advice.

“Anytime man, take care.” He said as Nick left.

When Nick got home, the first thing he did was call Sara.
