If I Don't Have You Chapter 17

Chapter 17

It had been two days, and Sara hadn’t heard a word from Nick of Brian. She felt very down, and alone. Her parents had left a few hours earlier, for the cruise they had won. She remembered her conversation with her mom before she left.

“Honey, are you sure you’re going to be all right alone?”

“Mom, I’m 17, I think I can handle myself.” Sara replied back snappishly.

“Well, you’ve been very quiet lately, and you’re getting dark circles under your eyes. Have you been sleeping at all?”

“Yes! I’ve just had a lot on my mind.”

“Oh, I wish you’d talk to me about it.”

“Mom, I’ll be fine.” Sara said, trying to remain calm. She never fought with her mom, not until lately anyways.

“Oh, all right. Would you like us to have Aunt Sue come over and check on you?”

“NO!!” She blurted out right away. Her mother gave her a confused look, and then gave in.

“All right then. I’ve got to hurry.” She said as Sara’s dad beeped the car horn. “We’ll be back in a week or two, I’m not sure. Take care. Call Aunt Sue if you need anything!”

“Okay, bye. Have a nice trip. Bring me back a souvenir!” She joked, and tried to lighten up a bit.

Sara snapped back into reality, after she recalled her conversation with her mom from earlier. She picked up the phone and dialed Jenni’s number.

“Hello?” Jenni’s mother asked.

“Hi, is Jenni there?”

“No, she’s not here right at the moment. She is over at A.J’s house,” Her mother giggled for a minute. “She should be back in a little while. This is Sara right?”

“Right.”

“Oh what’s the matter dear?”

“Oh, nothing, could you just tell her I called?”

“Yes.”

“Thanks!”

“Okay, buh-bye!” Jenni’s mother was always so cheerful. It definately rubbed off on Jenni, at times.

Sara thought to herself. “Great, when I need her the most, and I CAN get a hold of her, she’s at the place I can’t call! Ugh..” Sara’s mood just switched back into the sad and down mood. She sat on the couch, and flipped through the channels on the tv. She didn’t know what to do, or what to think, so she went to her room, and threw on some running clothes.

She grabbed her key, put it in her pocket, and ran out of the house. Running had always been helpful. She felt as though she could run away from all her problems, or just think about them. She didn’t focus on where she was going, just Nick and Brian.

She thought about Brian first. Brian -- he’s so nice. He’s a gentleman, and funny; he can be serious. Her thoughts of Brian were interfered by thoughts of Nick, who was very cute, funny, he could always make her smile, stupidly wonderful. Her mind continued to process both of them. She realized, “It’s Nick! I want Nick!” She said, after going through him peice by peice in her mind.

She turned right around from where she was, and ran straight home. As soon as she stepped in the door, she called Jenni. Luckily, Jenni was there that time.

“Jenni?”

“Hey! What’s up?”

“I decided!”

“What? Oh Nick and Brian? And...?”

“Well, I thought about it, and I really like Nick!” She said with enthusiasm.

“That’s great.” Jenni tried to sound happy, but she’d rather that Sara was with Brian. She had a better feel about him, and knew him a little more, through A.J. She thought that Sara would choose him, but she was wrong.

“I know, I feel like a great weight was lifted off my shoulders.”

“Good.”

“Yeah, I just wanted to tell ya! I’m gonna call Nick and tell him to meet me at Wonder Park! Bye!”

“Good luck, bye.” They both hung up. Right away, Sara called Nick. She told him to meet her at Wonder Park at 7:45, no questions asked, just do it. She hung up, before he could say anything. After the phone call, she ran up to her room and picked out a great outfit!

Brian didn’t hear about anything between Sara, Nick, and himself. He had been at the park all day, working on his song.

Sara got to the park at 7:25, and waited for Nick at the b-ball courts. She was so nervous, she had to come early. She hoped he would still have her. Sara fell into a daze, thinking only about Nick, when a soft voice broke her thoughts. She listened closer, and followed it.

There she saw, Brian, sitting at the same table he had been when she first met him. She walked closer, behind him, and listened. Brian stopped, and she spoke.

“That was beautiful!” Brian turned around, startled.

“Oh, I didn’t think there was anyone around.”

“When did you write that?”

“I started it a few days ago....” he paused, “for you.” Sara’s mouth dropped. Brian really did like her. She felt confusion sinking in her heart. Now this was worse. She had came to the park, thinking she really liked Nick, but now she knew that she didn’t follow her heart. It was Brian she wanted.

Tears started rolling down her face, and she ran up to Brian, who was sitting on top of the picnic table.

“I’m so sorry!” She mumbled out through the tears. Brian opened his arms, and she laid her head down on his shoulders.

“Shhh... You do know I really like you right?”

“Yes! And I know, too, that you’re the one I want! You!”

“Are you sure?” Sara smiled.

“I don’t think I’ve been more sure of anything, until now!” She said, and hugged him. Brian hugged her back.

“Have you told Nick?” Brian asked.

Sara told him the whole story about why she was here originally.

“I didn’t realize it, until I heard that song. I didn’t ever really think about it until then. I do now, though.” They got up, and Brian wrapped his arm around her waste. Sara looked at her watch, it said 7:43.

“I’ve got to go and tell Nick now.” She said, afraid of what hurt she might cause Nick, but she had to do it.
