“Hello?” AJ said, when he heard the door open, he was in the kitchen.
“Hey man it’s me.” Brian answere solemly.
“Hey! Good morning! What’s up?”
“Nothing.” Brian said, as he walked into the kitchen.
“You sound down compadre, what’s the deal?”
“Sara, Nick, and me.... it’s a big love triangle!”
“Oh, I see you now know that Sara’s been seeing Nick and you.”
“What? How’d you know that?” Brian said, grabbing AJ’s shirt.
“Hey, yo, chill! Jenni. She tells me everything!”
“Oh, and you wouldn’t bother telling me any of this?”
“No, I didn’t wanna get in between you and Nick, what’s your business. is your business, and not mine!”
“The one secret you actually do keep, is something I need to know!” Brian said sarcastically.
“Hey, come on, chill bro, there ain’t nothing I can do about it!” AJ said.
There was a silence in the room for a while.
“Unless....” Brian started up.
“Uh-oh.” AJ said.
“Unless, you talk to Jenni, and she talks to Sara!” Brian said, for once today, a smile came upon his face.
“Oh no, you’re not dragging me and Jenni into this! We’re happy! Nothing’s going to spoil that!”
“Well, you know, you’re not actually happy, unless I’m happy!” Brian said with a sly grin, as he walked over to AJ and put his elbow on AJ’s shoulder.
“Oh no!” AJ said, thinking of how mopey and depressed Brian would be.
“Yup! It could happen.”
“Okay, I’ll see what I can do, but in the mean time, none of that stuff, alright?”
“Alright! Okay, now I gotta figure out what to do.”
“What to do? Didn’t we just figure out what to do?”
“Well, we figured out what you are going to do, now what am I going to do about Sara. How should I act?”
“I don’t think she’s gonna wanna see either of you guys for a while!”
“Who said anything about seeing!” Brian said, with a plan.
“Oh no, not again!” AJ said annoyed.
“Hey, is Howie there?” Nick said, when Polly-Anna answered the phone.
“Yeah hold on.” She said, and set the phone down to get Howie.
“Hello?”
“Howie?”
“Yes.”
“Hey man, what’s up?”
“Hey Nick, nothing much. You sound down, what’s the matter?”
“It’s Brian, and that girl I was seeing, and me! It’s the love triangle of horror!” He tried, but he couldn’t even laugh at his own joke.
“Oh, that girl, wasn’t her name Sa.. Sara?”
“Yeah.”
“So, what’s the problem?”
“Well, she was seeing B-Rok® at the same time, and now we told her to choose between us. I really like her! I don’t know what to do!”
Howie thought to himself, “Nick’s never been like this, not over a girl anyways! He must really like her!”
“Well, does she know how much you like her?” Howie asked.
“Yeah, I kept telling her, and she told me she liked me a lot too, but I think she feels the same way about B-Rok®! Should I go and talk to her?”
“Well, that wouldn’t be fair to Brian, and I’m sure she needs time to think it over, she’s probably not in the mood to see either of you!”
“Oh yeah, I guess.... Hey! Could you talk to her?” He sounded a little more enthuised,
“Well, I could, but I never got introduced to her!”
“Oh, so what!”
“Nick! That’s rude!”
“Oh yeah, huh? Well, what do I do?”
“Give her time to think.”
“Okay, I guess you’re right!”
“Of course I’m right! You’re talking to the Latin Lover, I know all!” Howie joked, trying to get Nick to laugh, but it didn’t work. They both said their good-bye’s and hung up. Nick walked outside, and walked to the beach that him and Sara went to a long time ago. He sat down in the soft sand, and thought.
Brian told AJ, he was going to think. He went upstairs, to his room, grabbed his b-ball and walked to the park. He didn’t feel like driving. There was no one at the park, so Brian was happy. He didn’t feel like seeing anyone, he just wanted to think.
He started shooting hoops. He missed almost every basket. He tried to concentrate more, but it didn’t help. He walked over to the picnic table, s, where Sara and Jenni had first come up to him, when he was writing That’s What She Said, and set the ball down on the ground.
“That’s it!” He literally yelled outlout. “I’ll write her a song!” He grabbed his ball, and jogged his way home.
He ran up to his room, right past AJ without saying anything.
“Um, well HELLO to you too!” AJ yelled as he ran up the stairs.
“Sorry, got to do something!” He yelled back down. AJ was curious, so he walked up the stairs, and stood in front of the shut door, that led to Brian’s room. He heard something shut. Then heard Brian playing on his guitar.
AJ recognized what Brian was starting to play, right away. It was the new song Brian was starting to write. He started it about two weeks ago, and never got far with it. Not until today anyways. He heard Brian start humming along with the chords he played. He then heard him stop, get up and open his desk drawer. AJ pushed the door open a crack.
Brian was writing in a notebook. AJ opened the door, a little more. Brian must have heard, cuz he said, “Alright, you can come in already AJ!”
“Oh, sorry!”
“That’s okay! I’m gonna write her a song.”
“Good idea.”
“I know, I know! No applause please!” Brian joked. He certainly seemed to be in a better mood than earlier, AJ thought.
“Okay, I need some help with the lyrics!”
“Whadya got so far?”
"If I don’t have you, to hold , I can’t go on, in this world alone, baby it’s true. If you said good-bye, girl I would, I’m a star with no ligh, a day with no night, if I don’t have you." Brian paused, "That’s all!”
“Wow, you’re a genius!” AJ joked. Brian gave hima serious look. “Okay okay, well, let’s here the tune.”
Brian played the melody that he had written for the song. AJ nodded. “Okay, well, give me the pen and paper, and you can play the melody, and we’ll go from there.” AJ said, and they worked on the song, which would turn out to be called If I Don’t Have You.
