If I Don't Have You Chapter 13

Chapter 13

Sara got back from the park around 5:45. She walked up to her room, and turned on her radio. Where Do We Go, by No Mercy, was on. “Why do they always play music from for-ever ago?” She said to herself. She put in her Boyz II Men cd in, that she hadn’t listened to in forever. She put it on number 7, Can’t Let Her Go, and started singing the words with the cd.

Time passed, and she got ready to meet Jake. She walked out to her car, and drove to Godfather’s at 7:45. She walked in the door, and saw Jake sitting in the booth that the ‘group’ usually sits in. Then she walked over to him.

“Hey, what’s up?”

“Oh, nothing, you’re early!”

“I know, isn’t it a record!”

“Yeah!” Jake said laughing. Sara sat down in the booth, on the side across from him.

“So, where have you been lately? I mean no one’s talked to you? Jen’s been gone a lot too, but we all hear she has a guy.”

“Yeah, she does, his name is AJ, and he’s pretty cool. Me? Well, like I said earlier, here and there.”

“I know. You never answered my question about the boyfriend thing?”

“Well there’s nothing to be answered. I said I’ve been on a few dates.”

“Yeah, with one guy?”

“No, two lately.”

“Oh.”

“Yeah, so what about you? You haven’t called me lately, and neither has anyone else!”

“Well, me and Jesse finally finished his car. Sam and Nikki are still going out, and that’s pretty much it!”

“Oh, don’t we all have exciting lives!”

“Yeah!” Jake agreed.

They ordered a pizza and drinks. After they were done eating, they walked down to the park. Sara sat down at a picnic table, the one that the whole ‘group’ had sat at ever since kindergarten, and remembered things from their childhood.

“What’s the matter?” Jake interupted her thoughts.

“Huh? Oh, nothing.”

“Okay, then where are you?”

“Right here! I was just thinking back to kindergarten!”

“Oh!” Jake laughed. “Remember that time that I pushed Nikki down the slide at school, and Sam was at the bottom, and Nikki crashed right into the shovel Sam was holding, and she got a big cut above her eyebrows?”

“Yeah!” Sara laughed, and they talked more about the child memories they’d shared.

They stayed at the park until about 9:30, then walked back to Godfather’s to get their cars and leave.

“Okay, so you promise the group will see more of you now?”

“Yeah. Okay I lied. I don’t have a boyfriend, but I have been serious with the two guys I’ve been seeing.”

“I figured that! So?”

“I don’t know which one I like more though! I’m so confused! I like one, and then when I spend time with the other one, I like him more! It keeps working that way, and I’m just so confused!” Sara told her problems to Jake.

“I would be too!”

“Come on, I’m not joking! I don’t know what to do? What should I do?”

“Well, I don’t know! You sound like you’re really hung up on both of them!”

Jake paused, “I’m not a girl! I’m not good with stuff, you should talk to Nikki or Jen!”

“Okay, well, thanks for listening atleast! I should be going anyways! Tonight was fun! Call me more often! And have everyone else too! We should get together again sometime soon.”

“Alright! Lata!” Jake said, opening the door to his car, and getting in. Sara did the same and went straight home. On the way, she thought about Nick and Brian. Brian was always sweet and calm, and could always make her smile, and boy, was he a great kisser. Nick was always ready to cheer her up with a joke or a stupid stunt, and had killer charm. She hadn’t really spent as much time with Nick than she had with Brian.

Ten minutes after she had gotten into her house, and was about to call Jenni, the phone rang. Sara answered it, expecting it to be Jenni, but it wasn’t.

“Hello?”

“Sara?”

“Yeah, hey Nick, what’s up?” Sara smiled as she heard Nick’s soft voice on the other line.

“Nothing, what have you been up to? I haven’t talked to you lately.”

“Oh, um,” She thought about the time she’d been spending with Brian lately, “nothing really, work and stuff.”

“Yeah, I stopped by your work and they said you weren’t working. Do you work often?”

“Well, um, actually no, I went to part-time when summer started.”

“Okay, so what have you been up to?” Sara was quiet. “I know you’ve been hanging out with Brian.”

“Yeah, we’ve been hanging out a little bit.”

“Oh, well that’s cool, I guess. But..” Nick paused for a minute. “Sara?”

“Yeah?”

“You’re probably gonna laugh, but I’ve missed you.”

“Oh.” Sara started to blush.

“I mean I really like you, and I haven’t seen you in forever.” Sara just listened. “Then I found out that Brian’s been spending the night at your house. Nick sounded dissappointed and hurt.

“Nick, it was nothing like that! He just came over one night and we were watching movies and we fell asleep. And when we went out the other day, he scared me after you dropped me off, and so I asked him to stay cuz I was so scared.”

“Oh.”

“I’m sorry if that makes you mad or anything, but it was nothing like that! I really like you too Nick, and I’ve been thinking about you a lot lately.”

“You have?” The sound in Nick’s voice just had a lot more energy.

“Yes. I was gonna call you, but got tied up with other things.”

“Oh. So do you wanna do something?”

“Sure, when?”

“Oh, I dunno. Wait, I gotta go, talk to ya lata.” Nick said and hung up the phone. Sara couldn’t even fit in a ‘good-bye’, so she just hung up the phone. She walked into the kitchen and made some popcorn, then walked into the living room and turned on the tv.

Twenty minutes later, Sara was almost asleep, when the doorbell rang. She looked at the vcr clock, it read 11:55. Sara got up, sleepily and walked to the door.
