How the
turkey got to be the Thanksgiving Day Bird
In the beginging
there was an argument over which bird was going to be the Nations symbol.
The choices were the Bald Eagle and the Turkey. According to legend
Benjamin Franklin advocated for the Turkey. The turkey lost---but
only temporarily.
After the Civil
War Abraham Lincoln and Sarah Josepha Hale were desperatley seeking a holiday
that would bring the nation together. Thanksgiving was already a
holiday in some states in New England. Lincoln declaired is a National
holiday two centeries after the first original Thanksgiving. And
with that the Turkey regained respect.
