An Overview of My Autobiography
Its funny, as I look back over my life, to see how things have progressed based on the
choices I made. Early in nursing I had a desire to do preventative medicine. I thought it
would be great to give individuals knowledge to help them prevent or at least decrease
the severity of an injury, illness or disease such as diabetes. I was lucky in the fact that I
shared this desire with a nurse who at the time just happen to be in Occupational Health
Nursing. She had made a decision to come back to the hospital setting and her position
would be available within a few weeks. That job was with Abbott Laboratories and it was
the beginning of how I came to be where I am today. Not only did I get the job but I also
met my husband there. We now are the proud parents of two beautiful daughters.
Even though I eventually left Occupational Nursing to try a career as a Vocational
Teacher it was not long before the opportunity to come back into the Occupational Health
setting was presented. This time it was a result of one nurse, whom I did not even know
very well, recommending me for the Employee Health position at Scotland Memorial.
That was over 7 years ago. I was not in the position for long before I was promoted to
Assistant Director of Occupational Health and within a year promoted once again as
Director.
Many things have changed within my working environment. We went from a
department of 8 to a department of 28. Now, I am not only Director of the Occupational
Health Clinic but also Director of the Outreach Clinic, which encompasses
Rheumatology, Endocrinology, Allergy, Pain, Outpatient IV and Blood transfusions,
Mobile Services, Employee Health and Community Health.
I contribute my career success to my willingness to always strive to do my best.
I believe that education, not only for myself, but also for my staff is an essential key.
It is also an asset to work with associates who are also willing to go above and beyond
and to work with an organization that recognizes associates for their dedication. My
family plays an important role along with my faith in God.
Events, values, desire that
inspired me to select nursing as a career.
At an early age my grandmother was bed ridden from a stroke. At the time I could not
comprehend what was wrong nor did I know what to do to help. I watched my
grandfather care for her with a never-ending patience. It was because of my grandfather
that I first began to consider nursing as my career. As I grew up I never could identify
myself with any other profession. My desire to help those in need, whether family or
friend was always a daily part of my life. So it only felt natural to help others. And what
better way to help than to be there when someone needs you most, during a time of
sickness. Caring for others has given me the greatest joy and even though in my current
job I could easily not have direct contact with patients I choose to continue to be
involved. I believe I always will.
Nursing is a great Profession that
I highly recommend. For more information I am listing a few of the many
websites available. If you have questions for me I would be more than happy to
chat.
