You've Worked Your Magic On Us
a Tribute Written by
Kitturah Westenhouser

Music is the note that life flows on. Music is a large part of every avenue of life whether it is harp, flute or a combination of many instruments. It is what propels life to a more successful and less stressful peak where creativity can take shape and become fruitful.

Music has always been a part of my own life. It serves to both inspire and to sooth the cares of everyday life. Life hasn't been especially kind to me and the music helps me to keep the faith and remain on track.

In the early years of rock 'n roll music became a part of whatever life had to offer and I listened intently to the words and sounds. It was inspiring. It was the sound of my own era and still remains a part of whatever I have become. I had many favourite performers back in the early years but many fell by the wayside. Many only played their music for a short time and fell into the dustbin of time never to be heard from again.

Through time and space the Moody Blues has set themselves apart as one group who withstood the ultimate test - longevity. After over thirty years they still are creating sounds that bring a calm to the spirit and solace to the soul. The effect of their music is calming, relaxing and for some brief moments the stresses of life are gone and we are into another world where we are washed with musical notes that transport us into their world. This is what is called the Ninety Minutes of Happiness for many of us.

Thirty years of musical history has taken the Moody Blues around the world and with numerous albums. Songs such as Nights In White Satin, Tuesday Afternoon, and Ride My Seesaw have become a synonym of the band itself. They have set themselves apart as troubadours of a particular sound that seems to come from the very angels of Heaven. It is their music that has made them a legend in history. It is these songs and many others that have brought so much pleasure to their millions of fans.

Sitting amongst the fans in a packed auditorium or outdoors communing with fans and nature brings a person to an interesting perspective. There in the crowd you see persons of all ages and all backgrounds sitting together sharing an equal joy. Age does not matter. For there in the midst of human life there is a mix of the old and young all together brought under the umbrella of musical history. The Moody Blues make magic happen for one small ninety-minute window of our lives. It is that magic that some many fans, including myself, have become addicted to and just must have our concert fix.

There is a hint of mystery in the magic of Moody Blues music. It could be the image of southern England on a sunny day or the sight of the swan as it glides down river. It could even be those delightful little villages in Surrey where so many of the songs have taken shape and blossomed. The mystery is what keeps the music so fresh and so alive. Mystery is what keeps fans coming back time after time to the concerts. Mystery is what sells the albums. Their mystery is beautiful. Their music is essential to our existence.

Moody Blues music is as necessary as eating and sleeping. The music keeps us fed and creative juices can continue to flow. Our minds are at ease and life's journey has less bumps and boulders to stumble over. They become smaller and less painful.

True the band members have their own lives and families. They even have their own boulders to stumble over but for their work they keep our own faith alive and well. It is their contribution to our own lives that we celebrate when we play their albums and see their concerts. It is the work they do that eases our own suffering just a little. For ninety minutes of a concert all those problems are behind us and only they and their music are in front of us. Life's hardships are outside somewhere in the parking lot left to wait while we enjoy the music and see all the lights of another Moody concert.

The Moody Blues are what makes life's journey bearable and for that we are grateful. Their longevity speaks for itself that they have brought pleasure to a troubled world. They have brought love to a multitude of fans.

The Moody Blues have ridden a thirty plus years success wave but all the awards and trophies still do not amount to the most important gift of all - they have us and we still have them.
