End of Summer 2002 (part 2)

So I came to Eastern Michigan University. It was a long drive with my mom and dad so I listened to my CDs with my headphones the whole way there to keep my mind off of it all. We had trouble to get to my hall but we got there. So we unloaded my stuff and took it up to my room, 335 Wise Hall. It is on the 3rd floor but it was really the 4th because they start a ground floor (0). My roommate, James, was already moved in because he came a week early since he runs track. We put my stuff in and went to freshman orientation. We went to a talk or two and then the parents had to leave. Then all the incoming freshman went into one of 100 groups. I was in group 98. We had a group leader and we did stuff together during the 4 day orientation. We ate food and stuff and had a nice time. Our group leader, Jeff, was cool. He’s a sophomore and he said he became a group leader because he wanted to make some friends his own age since he has been around upperclassmen throughout his freshman year. Everyone in my group was cool. This girl named Amy was nice. I watched Dogma and Transformers: The Movie with her. And Amy’s roommate, Kari, was fun to laugh at like at lunch she talked about how she murdered her fish because she didn’t want to take it with her to college and she side it breathed to death. We tried to explain to her that it can’t breath to death and that it suffocated but it took us about a half hour until she kind of understood. The only bad part is that I would rather have any of them as a roommate to replace the one I got. He just doesn’t really talk and it’s really hard for me to talk with people that don’t talk to me first.

Well, so 4 days pass and I start classes. I’m majoring in Computer Science and I'm trying to minor in Japanese. First class I went to was Calculus 1. The first day didn’t seem too bad. It was mostly stuff I already knew. But as the days went on, it just got harder and I found out that there is stuff that I don’t know that I’m supposes to already know. It also didn’t help that I didn’t have the calc book for the first week of class. I need to study. Next I had my Japanese. This is defiantly my favorite class. I took a year of Spanish in High School and I hated it, but I love Japanese. The teachers are really nice and the way the language is set up makes since. We just got finished with learning the Hiragana character set and I think I learned it pretty well. We start Katakana next week and that is mostly the same think but I’m a little scared of Kanji. I heard that there are over 1000 Kanji characters. Then I had the public speaking class. It wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be but it still isn’t the best thing in the world. My first speech is to be given on the 18th. And then we have my computer class. We are using Java for programming which is cool because I wanted to use that in my high school computer class. So far it is really easy so that’s good. And that is it for my classes. 4 classes this semester.

So what else can I say about college so far? Well, it’s been kind of hot since it’s still summer but it’s starting to cool down. I can’t wait until it starts snowing. That’s one of the reasons I’m going here. Another cool this about this place is the squirrels. Squirrel kick ass and there are a lot of them here. I love squirrels! And I think that would be it. Not as bad as I expected but nothing really ever is. Yay for college!
