BRIGADE MONUMENTS HIT BY VANDALS AT CHICKAMAUGA

The monuments of the 15th and 49th Ohio Volunteer Infantry were hit by vandals on January 7, 2004. The vandals used gas powered paintball guns to inflict damage on over 100 monuments and markers. The damaged monuments were located near the intersection of Alexander Bridge Road and Brotherton Road where the brigade fought on the first day of the battle on September 19, 1863

On January 20, 2004, officials of the National Park Service announced that they had made an arrest in the case. Two local 16-year old high school students admited their part in the vandalism.

Park officials have downgraded damage assessments from $60,000 to $10,000.
