Sumerat the Avenger

By Emerald Treesong

The vermin left me half dead,
Lying there, draped, in an oak tree,
For three days and three nights I bled,
The vermin marched off with glee.

I crawled over to the river to get some water,
It took me quite a while to get there,
And she took care of me, did the otter,
And for me, she did despair.

I grew healthy by feeding off my hate,
My hate for the vermin that did this to me,
The vermin came back one night, late,
They slew the otter and sank her in the sea.

I tracked the vermin and slew them with poison dagger,
I avenged the otter that cared for me,
Out of the vermin camp I did stagger,
Then I realized I lost my memory.

Every creature seemed to be happy,
The otter who taught me all I knew had passed away,
Their happiness made me snappy,
I crumpled in confusion and there I lay.

I was taken into Redwall,
Where they gave me back my memory,
I wandered through Great Hall,
And then I saw the tapestry.

I left the Abbey, much grieved,
I traveled from that day on,
I learned from Martin, and believed,
I could set my life right one dawn.

My name is Sumerat the Avenger.
