HSPVA Camerata

The camerata took a great trip to Austin this January. We saw "Dead Man Walking," an intense opera based on a real life story. Hope everyone had a great time!

Help out with fundraising as a dedicated member of the Camerata. We are selling concessions at all of the HSPVA auditions so help out on these Saturdays and bring baked goods as well. We are also going to have our Annual Garage Sale again this year sometime in spring. All of these are great, fun opportunities to support the Opera Club so that we can support you, the members!

As a result of dedicated fundraising, Camerata will be taking some more fieldtrips this spring, with minimal cost to the members. Also, we are planning a trip to New York in December 2003 so the more you help out the less it will cost you to go.

"Our New York Trip"
Welcome opera fans! The opera club is growing fast, both in numbers and in our range of activities. This year, members have volunteered as ushers and boutique salespersons at Houston Grand Opera. Some club members went to New York City in December of 2001 to see Strauss's Frau Ohne Shatten and the musicals Kiss Me Kate, Aida, and 42nd Street.

Others competed for their own, all expenses paid trip to New York during the Chevron-Texaco Quiz Kids Competition. Bryce and Jessica advanced to Round II of the Quiz Kids Competition and each won a $500 scholarship. I hope some of you will participate in this next year.

Even if opera isn't your cup of tea, come join us for our lecture series, "Careers in Music," to explore options for your future. So far we have hosted General Manager Jim Ireland, Director of Education and Outreach Gary Gibbs, Ph.D.,Conductor Richard Bado, and General Director David Gockley, all of Houston Grand Opera. KUHF Director of Programming Bob Stevenson will be joining us soon.

Members of the club can receive dress rehearsal and performance tickets to operas during the season. Other opportunities for listening to opera are available over the radio. For instance, on each Saturday afternoon the Metropolitan Opera broadcasts live to hundreds of radio stations all over the world. In Houston, the broadcasts are usually Saturdays at 12:30 on 88.7 FM

Houston radio station KRTS 92.1 FM offers its weekly dose of opera on Sunday evenings at 7.
