The Yellowstone Caldera is Formed: In the center of what is now known as Yellowstone was a huge strato volcano. At this time there was a catastrophic erution. The landscape was changed within minutes. Covering thousands of square miles were fast moving ash flows. At the center, all the remained was a smoldering Caldera, a collapsed crater that measured 28 X 47 miles. The Yellowstone Caldera is a Resurgent Caldera, a Caldera which has fresh magma re-enter collapsed magma chamber and re-inflate it, forcing the caldera floor to dome upward, possibly to repeat it's cycle.
