Here's basically what you need for RP. You can use standard Yahoo! Chat to RP, in either the Teen, Romance or Arts & Entertainment (Ayenee) User rooms. Personally, I prefer Ayenee, but the other two are good for beginners who don't want to really experience some of the best at work.
Cheeta Chat is an advanced chat system that runs through Yahoo!. It comes with custom blends, avatars, more emotions...all kinds of goodies, and it's a lot better than average Yahoo!
