February 20, 2005

I was on a company trip (which is a whole other post to come) and was looking for a phone book in my hotel room. I open the nightstand drawer and I find a bible. I realize I have seen a bible in every hotel I have ever stayed in and for some reason, on this day, it annoyed me. I decided to read a little about why bibles are in every hotel room and got even more annoyed. I dont know why. I mean.. its just a book right? I think its just so assuming and sort of a lazy mans way of sharing faith with others. It also is such a limited option to choose from if a person really does want to seek out faith in some moment of need in a hotel room. What about other books of faith? Why be limited to one? It just struck me as odd and to think the bibles have been placed in hotels since 1908! I remember when I was younger and had heard about the band Stryper (i know, good god) throwing out bibles at their concerts. What a great way to make faith more impersonal and generic. I feel the same about the Gideon’s who put bibles in hotel rooms. I almost felt like putting it outside the door just to be stupid. I dont know..maybe I am just really tired...I just feel like the bible is a reminder of my childhood where I was told NO to everything and made to feel guilty for having an independent thought. Anyways....Im sure there is more I could write but I will leave it alone for now...Oh..and by the way...Christmas lights are still up on a few houses...STILL!!! ARGH!!
