| The sun, a stove, or a violin; each of these sources
throws off vibrations of one type or another, which we call light, heat
and sound, respectively. In a rather loose sense, these emanations are
microscopic particles of the thing that threw them off. The source of the
radiation may be withdrawn, but the emanations remain behind for some time.
For example, astronomers are only now observing the light of stars that
may have burnt out thousands of years ago. The fire may be extinguished,
but the stove will remain hot for many minutes afterward. Likewise, the
final note will sound for a few seconds after the bow has left the violin
strings.
In the same way, the electromagnetic emanations of human thought will project themselves well beyond the limits of the physical body. Any place, therefore, will be literally permeated by the emotional energies of the persons who previously occupied it, even though they may have vacated the premises many years ago. The source of the energies may have even died, but the thought will linger, until its force slowly dissipates. The human mind is continually throwing off emanations, and these thought-waves, after their initial force of projection has been expended, float along like invisible clouds, mixing and uniting with other energy masses of similar characteristics. Some of these clouds remain around the place from which they were sent forth and, unless disturbed by strong emotional energy of a contrary nature, will remain for many years before their force eventually weakens and is absorbed back into the universal supply. Other thought-waves, sent forth with a definite purpose or under the stress of strong emotional reactions, will radiate at nearly the speed of light toward the object of the thought. The majority of human beings put very little force into the creation of their thoughts. In fact, thinking seems to be an almost automatic and mechanical process. Consequently, their thought-waves are weak and carry only slight momentum, so they do not travel far. Thought energy, since it is a vibration of the electromagnetic spectrum, can be seen and felt by those who have developed their psychic sensitivities. If the proper instrumentation were in existence today, thoughts could be measured and their mass weighed. Their energies are just as real, and possess just as much volume and weight, as the numerous gasses that make up our planet’s atmosphere. The degree of their density, however, varies according to the strength of their projection. Thoughts attract to themselves other thought energies of a similar nature and, thus, combine their forces and coalesce into a kind of thought "fog." The composition and collective energies of the thoughts of a community, therefore, creates a specific thought-atmosphere. But, the place is not a conscious entity, and the characteristics of its atmosphere are not inherent in the land itself. They must have a human cause and origin. Strangers coming into a new community for the first time will feel the charge of the atmosphere and, unless they find it in harmony with their own mental character, may feel uncomfortable or impelled to leave as soon as possible. If, however, they do remain long enough in the same location, their own thoughts will be influenced by the prevailing energies and, in spite of themselves, a change (good or bad) will manifest in their manner of thinking. The difference between cities, or even neighborhoods, does not seem so great when you speak with the individual citizens. But, it becomes quite noticeable when you open up to the "spirit of the place." The thought-atmosphere of any location may be altered by either stronger or more positive energies. This explains why merely cleaning up a slum, or other bad neighborhood, will not completely eliminate it. The remaining negative thought energies will shortly reduce it to filth and crime. In order to really change such conditions, you must first change the prevailing climate of thought within its inhabitants. Individuals, too, carry about themselves an atmosphere of thought energy. And, like that of a particular community, this energy field can be felt by anyone coming within its area of influence. That is why some people bring happiness to a room by entering and some by leaving. Each individual human being draws to him or herself thoughts corresponding to those produced by their own mind. Like adding fuel to a blazing fire, the individual is both influenced and energized by these attracted forces. And, if the thoughts are of a negative variety, the longer he or she persists in a similar mental state the worse matters will get for him or her. But, on the other hand, if one cultivates thoughts of a higher and more refined nature, he or she will be drawn into conditions of a higher and better nature. There should never be any fear in your mind, though,
that you will be affected by any thought-form against your will. No person
or thing in the entire Universe of Universes can harm you without your
allowing it to be so. You can take steps to prevent such happenings, or
you can simply be somewhere else, away from the danger. But, indulgence
in negative thought activity will make you more likely to accept negative
energies and use them as your own. The resulting negative manifestations
will, then, be of your own creation. You will not be punished for using
these negative energies; you will be victimized by them.
